I remember hearing this station coming from my mom’s radio as she got ready in the morning. She was getting ready to take me to school. I was my daughter’s present age. Priceless memories since my mom passed away two and a half years ago.
Thanks so much for this aircheck. That was also the year the Mets won 108 regular-season games en route to winning the World Series, so this year was undoubtedly quite special for WHN.
The one thing we never hear much about the great memories of WHN is about the traditional Saturday night memory machine hosted by Jim Douglas which premiered on Saturday Night February 11, 1984. I still have that broadcast on cassette. I was only nine yrs old. I would love to hear everyone's memories or hear sound clips from some of those shows. That's where I was introduced to some real great classic Country
I was so glad to hear this aircheck. I've lived in Fairmont, West Virginia, all my life (53 years, 11 months, and 1 day to be exact. However, I lived for trips to NYC to hear WHN, and nobody loved them anymore than I did from April 14, 1979 (when I first heard them) till July 1, 1987, when they became WFAN. I couldn't get it very well down here, as 1050 in NYC has to protect Toronto's CHUM (also 1050). I listened to the Memory Machine a time or two. What I really liked were their "personalized" versions of some country songs. Ed Bruce's "Love's Found you and Me" went "Just as sure as there's country WHN", the studio version started out "Just as sure as there's gold in California". And though I never heard it, I understand WHN had its version of Tommy Overstreet's "Fadin' in, Fadin' Out" where he sang "I was foolin' round toolin' down Interstate 40, listening to WHN' The version in record stores (remember them?) went "listening to my favorite country show". I'd love to hear WHN's versions of those songs
At 2:11, Del said that a 10-pound weight loss in cat was equivalent to 100 for a human being. He pronounced human "you-man" and humid "you-mid". At 3:57, he mentioned Daylight Saving Time starting the following Sunday. As of 2007, it starts the second Sunday in March. Also at 7:24, he said it was Tuesday. April 24 that year was Thursday.
Gary Kerns The scoping was over-done. Usually you hear a bit more for ID purposes and it can be restored later. Here you’re lost unless the DJ is specific or the song obvious....
