February 16-18, 2023 - Illinois High School Boys Wrestling Individual Tournament - University of Illinois, Champaign, IL Drew Sadler {R} Anna Jonesboro IL defeated Ian Akers {G} of Peoria Notre Dame IL by 5-3
I call foul on the green jacket coach’s constant yelling… er I mean “coaching”.. and his last comment disagreeing with the (two) ref’s decision on awarding the final 2 points… Very unsportsmanlike.
A couple of observations first at 434 how could that not hurt & somehow be a foul? Also could they extend the video a few seconds to show the final score?
I don't think Sadler had control at the last grab at six minutes. I think the refs were originally correct. They shouldn't have listened to the biased coaches.
In American Folkstyle wrestling, it is a technical violation for the wrestler in control to overlap their hands around the defensive wrestler's body or both legs while down on the mat. It would have resulted in one point being awarded to the opponent. International Freestyle and Greco-Roman do not have this rule because mat wrestling is limited in those styles. Freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestlers only have a few seconds down on the mat before the referee will stop and restart them from the neutral position on their feet. That is not the case in American Folkstyle wrestling, where they can remain down on the mat for the entire period. As a result, it is important to prevent the wrestler in control from locking their hands around the opponent; otherwise, it would be virtually impossible for the defensive wrestler to escape.
It seemed like he was also upset about the second stalling call when the other wrestler held his athletes hands with no intention to escape. The stall calls, other than the obvious first one, were painfully inconsistent; they evened out in the end but green never should have been hit for the second stall
