If you have a liner, be careful lowering the water level to low. The water table underneath your pool could push the liner up as the hydro static pressure lightens up as you lower the water level. I put an elbow piece of pvc on the return jets so that they stick up above the water line and cap those off.

My pool is on high ground so this problem does not affect my liner. Thanks for the idea Mills. A

Hi Alec. It's a sad day when the pool closes! Interesting process, perhaps if you take a spare pipe coupling (union) you could make up a fitting where you blow the pipes out with compressed air like they do with lawn sprinkler systems. I have purged many machines for shipment in the winter and compressed air does the job great. I did learn the hard way that pipes filled with water freeze and crack because the ice is larger that the water is. but if the pipe is half full then there is no worry because the ice expands into the air spaces. take care owen m

Once opened, I heat the pool up and we use it a lot as summers can be 36C with high humidity. The most expensive item to fix is a cracked water pipe inground. This pool is over 20 years old, never a problem with winter damage and I like to use lots of anti-freeze, foam and blown pipes. Thanks for watching Owen.

@@AlecPeirceAtTheRanch the question is what happens when your pool fills back up with water after winterizing it?

If you make sure you blew all the water out the lines and system do you really need any antifreeze ? Serious question
@AlecPeirceAtTheRanch
@AlecPeirceAtTheRanch Год назад
Yes as your not 100% sure all the water is out and over winter, some may leak in or condensation build up. A jug of anti-freeze is cheap insurance to prevent a pipe crack. A

I came to this video because the other one the guy didn't use any antifreeze and didn't drain below the return jets. I prefer to use the antifreeze too cause I don't trust myself to get all that water out.

Thank you so much for the video! Really helpful. I have a couple of questions. Other than shock and algecide, are there any chemicals you put in the water? And, does water need to be sucked out of the heater or just unscrewing the pipe will do the trick?
@AlecPeirceAtTheRanch
@AlecPeirceAtTheRanch Год назад
Those chemicals are the best. As for the heater, drain all water and the lines too. There should be a lower drain valve to open and I disconnect the hoses to ensure all water is out and blow out all the hoses. Can't say how important draining water everywhere is to ensure no cracks and an easy spring start up. See you in spring. A

Why not plug the first one that has the antifreeze coming out of it with the plug that is going in for the season when you know you have success with that jet? Could I just put the plug in while I am laying there instead of my finger?
@AlecPeirceAtTheRanch
@AlecPeirceAtTheRanch Год назад
Draining as much water from the lines as possible then adding anti-freeze give the most concentration of antifreeze. You can never totally dry the lines as water/condensation will drip in over the fall/winter/spring. Hope I understood your question correctly. A
