This week on Little Wars TV, our wargaming club travels to England to follow in the footsteps of Harold Godwinson, the last Saxon king of the British Isles. We refighting the trilogy of battles that defined the momentous year, 1066. Hastings may be the famous climax to the Norman conquest, but it was preceded by two critical battles fought 250 miles north. Today we begin the crisis of 1066 with the first great battle between the Saxons and the invading Vikings under King Harald Hardrada!
The winner of our 1066 series here in the club will become an official LORD, thanks to Established Titles! Our limited-time discount code gives you an extra 10% your own lordship (or the gift of lordship!). While our code is good all year, the ADDITIONAL 80% Black Friday sale is only good through the end of November:

Can Earls Edwin and Morcar delay the Viking advance on York, or with the Danes overwhelm the Saxon defenses as they did historically? Join us now for a fantastic, "pocket sized" battle played on a compact, 2'x2' tabletop in 6mm scale. Our 1066 series is going to showcase how you can fight the biggest, most famous battles of the Dark Ages and early Medieval era without a big budget!
To celebrate our epic, Season 4 premiere we're releasing TWO wargame episodes today, back-to-back. So after you see the outcome of Fulford Gate, continue the historical tabletop binge with us and continue onward to the next battle in the trilogy, Stamford Bridge!

@@Thecodytree mainly commented as a joke, but honestly the Glorious Revolution is really a matter of perspective. Personally I believe a professional foreign army of over 20,000 that come and seize military control from a head of state who did not want to relinquish control regardless of who supported it or how much of a fight the opposition gave still constitutes an invasion. Of course that is an outside viewpoint as I am neither British or Dutch.

Harold II was the last crowned ANGLO-Saxon English king. Yes, the word Saxon is in there but it is very different from a Saxon King.
@zak3744
@zak3744 Год назад
I've heard that some US people are touchy about the word "anglo-saxon" because apparently some racist weirdoes use it as some kind of racialised term over there. Which just sounds vaguely comical from this side of the pond, the same as when Vladimir Putin recently claimed the "anglo-saxons" were responsible for blowing up the Nordstream pipeline and it just raised the mental imagine of people going out in longboats and trying to poke it with spears. 😂 Whether that's anything to do with the terminology chosen in this video, I've no idea though!

The Norweigan claim is not completly bogus. Canute was the King of Denmark, Norway and England (Briefly also Scotland). This is 30 years before 1066 or so. Harald Hadrada did try to claim the throne of Denmark before England. When he got powerfull friends in Northen England/Souther Scotland sweering im loyalty (Tostig) it looked like his second chance after faling to claim Denmark?

I find the comment about Stamford bridge being not well known ammusing, as I remember being told stories about it as a young child. It was, to be fair, often as a back drop to Hastings, but the beserker tale and the fall of the last viking was also sometimes told to me as a story in its own right. Enough so that I have for years wished I was a better writer, as I think a book following Harald Sigurdsen/Hadrada from escaping Norway, through his time in the Varagian guard, back to become king of Norway, and then ending the book right before Stamford Bridge. Then a second book, following Harold Godwinson through his time in Normandy, being advisor to the king, becoming king, fighting Stamford bridge, then ending with the march to Hastings. Finally, a third book, following William the Bastard through his invasion of England, and subsiquent early issues of subgigation through to his death.
