Love the story of Stocky and Gloria, and the funny tail dipping of the wagtail looking for food in the shallows.

This vlog was a feast of birds! The story of Gloria and Stocky is very touching and I wonder if they have found the perpetrators. The wagtails are glorious and the tender baby robin is delicious (er...not to eat of course)! Nail biting story of the brave duck :) I can see why you love the Chesterfield canal - the scenes are beautiful and the stories most interesting. Take care Vanessa until next week! xxx

I love the stories you uncover. They add so much to the journey. Some great wildlife videography. Reminds me of my biology professor many years ago. He was so good at spotting creatures on the nature walks, we were convinced he tied them down the previous day. The wagtails playing is so funny. One of you best clips.

I’m glad you have enjoyed the Chesterfield canal I’ve never cruised along it but I have walked along some stretches. It’s very beautiful and not very much used by boaters. How amazing to see and hear a lovely yellow wagtail, it was enjoying looking for bugs in the mud. What amazing history lessons you teach as you cruise along, nature lessons too, the orchid was beautiful. It looked a challenging cruise with lots of locks, low bridges and low water levels too. I thought it was funny when u were filming the wag tail and a cockerel 🐓cock a doed and it sounded like it was the wag tail🤣🤣. Can't believe I got to do the first like - YIPPEE! Okay...I'm back from my revelry. I forgot just how beautiful the Chesterfield Canal is, especially the upper stretch. I remember watching Robbie Cumming traversing that canal and thought then how similar parts of the Chesterfield is to the Huddersfield Canal [beautiful but with 10 gazillion locks (actually 74 in just under 20 miles)]. SAD story about the swans - good ending though. Did they ever catch the culprits? Before I forget...if you do do that short gardening video for Gardeners World, be sure to include your 'bumper' garden - unique, indeed! Have a great week - safe travels! Cheers...

HI Vanessa, it's so good to hear that people care about wildlife and help when there is a need. Great story on the swans, and it was great to see the yellow wagtail. I saw a pair near Hall Green lock on the Macclesfield. Unfortunately by the time I grabbed my camera they disappeared.

Wow..this weeks fabulous vlog was a real splendid treat to watch.which was full of very engrossing subjects so splendidly covered in such amazing detail.what a truly tragic swan story.so sad the loss of the swan.it’s good to see the other swan is on the mend.I know you’re always researching these historical buildings churches bridges and manor houses.but do you know where did the canal name first originate from.why was the name shortened to the cut.to me this would be very intriguing to find out this gem of canal history.also I’m curious to know this fact.do you both frequent the same mooring locations throughout the calendar year.while continuously cruising the canals of great Britten .or on the other hand.find an alternative mooring.that you have not stopped at along your totally amazing advantageous journey.if so do you find them more alluring to seek out.I’ve noticed in your absolutely marvellous videos.that you have a fantastic rapport with all the lock keepers that you encounter.whilst cruising.you’re a very charming sociable lady of the nomadic narrowboat community.with the most friendly smile.do the both of you even feel nauseous with the perpetual undulation of your narrowboat.while sitting in your cabin.or is there an equilibrium throughout the entire hull to stabilise the boat.so it will inveriably stay virtually motionless.have a wonderful weekend and an amazing week ahead cruising the cut.

Hi Vanessa, I also stumbled across your vlog a few months ago and now look forward to every episode, one question for you though we have a Labrador who is the spitting image of Zephyr, she will be 6 on Monday and we got her from a gamekeeper near Alton towers, it’s very unlikely but I thought they could be part of the same litter, anyway brilliant vlogs, keep up the great work👍

Someone who kills swans for fun will likely not stop at animals. It’s such a sad story about Gloria and Stocky. You’re always so kind to the wildlife you encounter, I’m sure Stocky felt that. Beautiful vlog as usual!

Hi Vanessa(?) just came across your channel today, this wet wintery day in Western Australia, so hi, I am now a new subscriber...love your little stories. I do hope they caught whoever tried to kill the swans, so glad one at least was able to be rescued and found a new mate, they are such beautiful creatures, we tend to have more blacks than whites in Oz, it also being our state emblem in WA. You look at the narrow boats and think how much space there actually seems to be, then you look at the loch you are travelling through and go Whoa!! thats really narrow. I will have to start at the beginning for the why's and hows and who's of your story rather than ask you a 100 questions. Be safe out there, I love your narrative. I also love your bird photography. Your little yellow wagtails are so different to our large black and white ones who spread their tails and wag them sideways instead of up and down..keep your stories and videos coming they are so interesting to those of us on the other side of the world...PS I love your art journal, is it possible to turn your pages a little slower please? Your art work is lovely do you have web site? Thankyou its made my day seeing this :)

But a couple of times a year, One appears on our Flat-Roof to bathe and drink from the 'puddle' that accumulates there - (I know - Shouldn't be a puddle 🙂) .. And I live in a Town Centre ?? ...... Hi Vann. You left me with so many wonderful topics for which to comment on. I must say that I've never seen or even consciously heard of the wagtail. The question that arises is: Why do they wag their tails constantly? A quick Google study on Wiki states "the the reasons are poorly understood. It has been suggested that it may flush up prey, or that it may signal submissiveness to other wagtails. Recent studies have suggested instead that it is a signal of vigilance that may aid to deter potential predators. I find it fascinating. Thank you so much for introducing this bird. I've been on South Street in Philadelphia after midnight and I can see the similarities in behavior. I believe it's a mating signal. Bon voyage. PS- Very good idea on slowly turning your journal pages. Your publisher will like that very much.
