On RU-vid, honestly I can't see a difference. MAYBE after you point it out 🤷🏻‍♂️ But if it's that tricky to spot... there's no discernible difference. 1080 is way more than adequate for RU-vid vids.

I watched it in a proper 4K editing monitor. Even though I can tell the difference when I watched closely, it's very unnoticeable. For now, I only see 8K as a room to crop in inside a 4K timeline.

Ive noticed this and watched a few videos about the camera in general, im not sure if its hunting but "bang on" is not the term I would use at all, I think its just the smooth natural canon af pulls we were use to are gone, its nasty and distracting

Human eye can see roughly 500 something MP across your entire vision with the centers, like a lens being sharper than the peripheral. 8k is like 33 mp. So I wonder what a 500MP image would be like 😂

Honestly, I couldn't tell much of a difference. Some shots appeared 'softer' than others which might be the resolution difference. But it's quite indistinguishable honestly, if the video is really about technical capabilities then yes we'll see the difference. But to me it's the story and characters that'll keep me hooked and if done correctly, I'm sure I won't notice the difference between 1080 and 8k because I'll be focused on the story and characters and not the resolution.

90% the people now a days watching on phones. And I'm sure the difference is only in their head. Like the people watching on computers and like 70% watching on 1080p monitor but get mad if it isn't posted in 4K lol Yes I had some one years ago mad I didn't post in 4k.. back when no one really had 4k monitors lol

And the funny thing is, when you're almost at the top, BOOM, there's another peak behind and it's never ending. At some point we need to stop, look around and see where we're at and if we can't build something good there

Canon's autofocus isn't the greatest atm, Sony's would have handled this much better but no camera of theirs does 8k besides the high end cinema ones.

The key take away for me is that the final medium is most important. I couldn’t tell much of a difference streaming on RU-vid on my tv at home, but like you said - huge difference on your nice monitors in studio.

Vlogging with two cameras while riding a Onewheel... I have so much to learn. Couldn't tell the difference between clips for the most part, though whenever there was text (like on the camera boxes) the detail on them would give a strong hint! May have to try shooting in 1080 and upscaling to 4K for RU-vid...the file sizes are just getting too hard to manage. Thanks for the comparison Matti!

Some of the most popular RU-vidrs are not filmmakers, and some of them don't even have expensive gear. I don't watch RU-vid videos based on what resolution it's in. This is a great lesson for creators, focus on your content.

Matti, every single time I watch one of your videos I feel the need to film something, thank you by the way, on my iphone I can't see any difference at all, on my 27 inch monitor I can spot some differences but with youtube compression it's very hard to tell apart the resolutions. when heavily compressed, good (10 bit?) hd is as good as 8K

I saw the difference on my 2K screen. I even saw that some of the clips were 4K and 720p. But when the scene is moving quickly its difficult to spot the difference. Resolution is not everything, but it's hard to get REALLY good 1080p out of most modern consumer cameras. Thats why it is good to have 4K or even higher on those cameras because it look better.

I watched it in 8K on a 27" imac 5K display and during the actual sequence, I couldn't tell a difference at all. Maybe a little bit during the comparison shots at the end but not enough to make me go through the effort of filming/editing in 8K. ESPECIALLY for YouTude. A good story in 720p is gonna beat a crappy story in 8K any day of the week!

Considering RU-vid's infamously high compression algorithm, this video would have been much better if uploaded on a file sharing site to allow users to download the video in all it's probably many, many GB glory. Heavily compressed on RU-vid, there's not much difference between any videos that are 1080p and above. Also, with some of the lower res shots having a lot of bokeh and minimal text or hard lines, that probably hides the real effects of the lower resolution.

You know, I feel like that's the point. There is definitely a difference, no question. But is that difference, on this particular platform, significant enough to take up all that extra space and take all that extra time? So if you are vlogging for YT you probably don't need to bother. The reality is all these modern cameras are way good enough for youtube, light them right and exposure them right and they all look awesome. Even 4k, is an overkill. The bit rate after rendering is 100+ mps then is compressed by YT to 12.5mps. the out of camera looks so much better than after upload.

Watched on a 1080p screen where i do colorgrading. I could see some shots are less detailed, but i could have been youtube going low, or the focus not been exactly perfect. It wasn't at all a deal breaker where i was, damn, that looks awefull. Maybe that's why anyone would shoot with a Alexa in 2k than a phone in 8k.. Resolution is something that could help to make better looking footage, but it's not what you only need to make or break a video. Dynamic range and actual image quality are what matters to me. Amazing 1080p is much better to work with than shitty 8K. I'm not saying that the Canon R5's 8K is bad, I'm just saying it's not necessary to have or shoot 8K.

I did notice a very slight difference in the two face shots toward the end, but for all of the moving stuff it was pretty difficult to tell. The 720p doesn't surprise me though. My camera only shoots 120fps in 720 and I mix it in with my 4k all the time, and except for in premiere it's really hard to pick out the difference.

I'm still stunned at the difference between high detailed 4K video in my NLE, and what RU-vid does with its compression. There's a huge difference between 1080 shot on a camera like the M5 and 8K video shot on the R5, but if you're comparing 1080 video shot on the Canon C100, well, that's another story. Its more about capabilities rather than specs. Give me detailed 1080 or 4K anyway over 8K or 12K.

I need to find a cheap mirrorless that can be plugged into DC power, that records crisp 1080, good stability and focus, and upscale it to 4k. I couldn't tell the difference on a 5k imac full screen.

TBH,I might just trippin but the 8k gives it a different look,its soooo sooo crispy and more cinematic for me.I really cant tell why.

I was able to tell the difference in 8-10 shots I was clearly able to see difference in the close up face shot I could see massive difference in your beard in 8K and 1080p I was 100% sure that the first one was 8K and the second one was 1080p because as you said if you watch 4k or 8k you can definitely tell the difference in quality because you are accustomed to the detail of 4K or 8K (personally I watch 4k) if you have 1080p screen or you are watching on a small screen then I am pretty sure that you cannot tell the difference between 8K and 1080p ." CONCLUSION : YOU CAN DEFINITELY TELL THE DIFFERENCE IN BIGGER SCREEN OR IF YOU ARE USED TO WATCHING ONLY ON 4K,8K . Nice video love your content ,congratulations on 1 million is advance.

There are quality differences, however, the online platform reduces the quality to make them all look damn near the same. Screen size plays a very important part also. Most people are not watching on large screens, which doesn't help to show the differences. 720p I would say is the only one you can clearly see the difference with regard to detail. People watching this on a smartphone will never see the difference. Everything looks great at a smartphone scale. Thanks for the vid Matti.

I could see the difference on a 1080p monitor, but to be honest, even the 720p looked just as good on youtube. I'm not pixel peeping when I'm just watching content on youtube otherwise it's just boring. Nice video man keep it up.

Totally agree with you. If you’re a vlogger, save a ton of time and effort and shoot in 1080. If your final audience is 90% (or even 70%) online, shoot in 1080. If you’re shooting commercials, then 4K or 8K, and try to use a C200, or better cinema camera.

8k is best exploited for the pan, crop, and zoom benefits in post. It's an incredibly powerful workflow to shoot wide and the do the camera movements after the fact in post.

Honestly could tell the higher quality apart from the 1080 but I think the 4k is more than good enough. I will say this though,the detail on the 8k footage, I was living it.
