Joystick: Extreme 3d pro with clamped centering spring
Pedals: Driving force GT pedals with stiffened accelerator and softened brake
Motion Tracking: Free Track with 3 point setup (Mounted on headphones and powered via 5 volt USB) using filed and polished Infrared LEDs and a PS3 webcam with IR filter removed and a floppy disk visible light filter installed inside the camera housing. 125 FPS and 0 Jitter in any lighting conditions. Total Cost including PS3 webcam= $22.00
Hotkeys mapped on a Razer Nostromo pad.
This was played with an EVGA GTX 560 Ti 2GB graphics card (overclocked to 970MHz at the core and 2019MHz on the memory clock) stuffed into a tiny case with a sub par mobo, quad core i5-2400 processor and 8 gigs of the cheapest ram HP could get its hands on before they released yet another piece of garbage.
FPS Drops down into the low 30s in heavy weather with lots of planes in the sky but aside from the occasional dip the frame rate usually sticks firmly against the 60 limit I've set in Inspector. The video was recorded using MSI afterburner MJPG encoding at 70% quality and a full frame capture, then uploaded and ruined by googles rediculous choice of WebM encoding. Enjoy!

Disabling The pilot and letting him land at 13:23 truly reflects the spirit WW1 aviation. Very much appreciated, and well done.

Live to fight another day! There's quite a few stories of airmen from both sides being captured and being treated very well, even enjoying their time with the enemy. I think that flying itself was so difficult that just about every pilot had great respect for anyone else who managed to keep a plane in the air. Thanks for watching!

@@Soknik01 It also probably had something to do with the fact that WWI was essentially the last "old-world war;" though it had rifles and artillery, it was obviously like it was still the 18th and 19th centuries, and the belligerents were still 18th-19th-century warlord states, with armies of ye-olden peasants and knights far-removed from the politics at the top. I'd imagine that most anyone who survived being captured was treated, if nothing else, at least as a human being.

Had a similar dogfight of this size. Me (flying Alabtross D2) with 4 other planes from Jasta 7, went up and helped a flight of 5 Halberstadts fend off 10 Nieuport 17s 5 french and 5 british. Things were going well until 5 Spad 7s showed up. We lost around 3 albatrosses and 1 halberstadt while the enemy lost 4 nieuports and 1 spad. I ran out of ammo and had to leave early after only downing 2 Nieuports :(

Weapons fire seems to cause a lot of wing failure whereas I thought most kills were actually obtained by hitting the pilot, engine, or fuel tank.
@mattmcintyre7083
@mattmcintyre7083 7 лет назад
You're correct. I often will fire on the wings because they present the biggest target when viewed from the angles I most frequently attack from. When following a plane in a tight turn, the front plane exposes the whole top of his wings to the guns of the pursuit plane. The same is true when you're diving down on a target for some boom and zoom action- Assuming you're able to lead the target with your gunfire, from that angle of attack the wing is such a nice juicy target. As someone without the steady hand of a more talented pilot, I find my success rate tends to be higher if I focus on the biggest target possible, but if you watch videos from truly elite pilots like IRFC Requiem you'll see endless examples of him sending 6 rounds directly into the enemy cockpit, ending the fight before his target had any chance to respond. Thanks for watching!

@Eccho3
@Eccho3 2 года назад
@@laurenspivack1903 They could bail out fine, but the apparent issue with chutes is that they are bulky and weighty, and would encourage pilots to abandon their planes (at least this was the thinking in the early war and RFC). The germans eventually gave their pilots parachutes, then the french, americans, and brits gave their pilots chutes

What I love best during the First World War is that there was no rock and roll, hip hop, gamgster rap, or even death metal music. We didn't have those kinds of music. We also didn't have any hard-core pornography back in those days. We also didn't lagalize abortion in those days.

People were buying heroine and opiates over the counter, women couldn't vote, young children frequently were forced to drop out of school and work full time under horrible conditions, people routinely died from infections, the streets were filled with horse crap, almost nobody had access to indoor plumbing and black Americans were frequently terrorized by the KKK. Hell, the average life expectancy in 1918 was 39 years. You're romanticizing an era that was truly hell for most who lived through it.

So that's how you fly a camel! Left-hand turns while blipping the motor....
@Soknik01
@Soknik01 10 лет назад
To be honest the left turns are just a result of having to follow the enemy. The camel has a slightly harder time turning left than it does right due to the spinning rotary engine torquing the camel in the opposite direction. The albatross pilots are trying to gain an edge by forcing the camel to follow them through the more difficult counter clockwise turn as opposed to letting the camel chase them to the right where it has a considerably easier time staying stable and balanced.
@michaelcopeland8806
@michaelcopeland8806 9 лет назад
Soknik01 You have it backward, The Sopwith's (Pup and Camel) had engines that turned counter-clockwise (From the pilots perspective). They turned easier to the left than the right due to the torque. A Sopwith could turn 270 deg. to the left faster than it could turn 90 deg. to the right. Torque turns the same direction as the engine, not opposite.
@Soknik01
@Soknik01 9 лет назад
Michael Copeland Nope I'm dead on. Yes the engine turns counter clockwise from the pilots perspective but it does so by having the mass of the spinning engine rotate around a stationary shaft bolted to the airframe which in turn caused the plane to want to roll right in the direction opposite the propellers rotation. The camel can turn much faster to the right since trying to turn with the rotation of the engine forced you to fight the gyroscopic effect trying to roll the airframe in the opposite direction the engine was spinning. The result of attempting to turn with the engines rotation is that the torque pulls the nose of the aircraft up quite a bit if you are not prepared to compensate for it by bringing the nose below the horizon line prior to initiating the left turn. I'll do my best to illustrate why a rotary engine rotating one way causes the plane to roll the opposite direction. Imagine you have a miniature sopwith camel in a vacuum suspended above ground with no air resistance. The engine is rotating at full speed and the plane stays level. Now to simulate the friction of air against that rapidly spinning propeller by placing the tip of your finger so that the propeller touches your finger each time a blade passes by. What happens to the body of the plane? It wants to roll or rotate opposite the propeller. If we took this idea to the extreme, imagine applying even more friction to the propeller blades by actually grabbing them in your hand so tightly that they could no longer spin. What would the torque of that working engine do to the airframe? It would spin the body of the plane in the opposite direction. In fact if you can find one of those old balsa wood toy planes that used a rubber band you would twist up to power the plane you can immediately get a fantastic visualization of how this all works. Thanks for watching and I hope you enjoyed the video.

Are rotary engines generally more powerful in rof than the others?
@13aceofspades13
@13aceofspades13 8 лет назад
not really, the Clerget9b in the Sopwith Camel created 130HP, the Mercedes D.IIIau in the Albatros D.V put out about 200HP, the difference is you save a ton of weight with a rotary piston engine, a liquid cooled inline engine itself is heavier because it needs more components such as a flywheel, water jackets, ect... then a cooling system is required which requires plumbing and a radiator which can easily also be damaged in combat. a rotary engine is all self cooled, has a all loss lubrication system, and because the block spins it requires no flywheel and the inertial force does a lot of work that some components have to do in a regular inline engine. the Sopwith Camel had a loaded weight of 1,450LB while the Albatros weighed 2,000LB. the advantage is the Sopwith Camel was literally 500LBS lighter loaded, so it didn't need the 70 extra HP the Albatros did, in fact the Sopwith Camel had almost every advantage agents the D.III variant which granted has the 170HP D.IIIa engine, and the D.V was only faster than the Sopwith Camel, the Camel performed better in almost every other aspect except the Albatros had a lot more horsepower.

@Soknik01

Thats a great question Charles! I wish there were rear view mirrors available in Rise of Flight but unfortunately this idea didn't gain popularity until many years after WW1. I believe the first widespread use of rear view mirrors in fighter planes began during WW2 and continues to this day. The F/A-18E "Super-Hornet" for example is equipped with 3 rear facing mirrors. One above the pilots head and two more mounted on either side of the canopy.

What would one need to buy, in the way of a basic joystick to play this game?
@Soknik01
@Soknik01 8 лет назад
You can pick up an entry level joystick equipped with a twist axis to operate the planes rudder and a slide for throttle as well. Google "Logitech Extreme 3D Pro" and you'll see the stick I'm referring to. Can usually find it new for around $30 US. Here's the catch - If you enjoy the game you will almost certainly want a better stick ASAP since the Logitech has a very stiff center spring that can make precision aiming a real pain in the ass. If you decide you like the Logitech stick, you'll need a new one in fairly short order anyways since the potentiometers (the sticks position sensors) on the Logitech frequently begin to spaz out and lose their usability within 6-12 months. The next step up from the Logitech stick is going to be a Saitek stick which costs around $130 new which is quite a large jump in price. That's the reason I suggested you test the waters with the cheap stick- If you don't enjoy the game you have only spent a little money as opposed to quite a bit more. If you're patient you can find great deals on used sticks. I picked up my Saitek X52 in perfect condition for $20 from a girl on Craigslist. Her boyfriend pissed her off, and now his stick is mine lol.

@toofless4541 7 лет назад
if you havent already gotten a stick yet, i would HIGHLY recommend the Thrustmaster T.16000m instead. It uses magnetic sensors and is extremely accurate and precise. It uses the same technology and Thrustmaster's $400 Warthog. Goes for about $50 USD.

carmium Both actually. The camel does have a throttle lever but for the most part I leave it wide open and just blip the rotary off to control engine speed and keep the rpms from climbing too high in a dive. Alternately, you could slide the throttle back and lean out the fuel mixture in a dive to let the engine run non stop without over revving it.

Why does the camel do that so easily ? 3:08 happens to me a lot as well
@Soknik01
@Soknik01 8 лет назад
It's due to the camel having a rotary engine. Normally an engine is mounted to the frame of the plane and that engine then turns a shaft that's connected to the propeller to drive the plane. A rotary engine is a whole different animal. Instead it has a shaft bolted to the frame of the plane and the entire engine and all of its mass rotate around the stationary shaft in order to drive the propeller. Since rotary engines have their large mass spinning around a shaft as opposed to the other way around, it creates a large amount of gyroscopic force which ultimately wants to roll and yaw the entire plane in the direction opposite that of the spinning propeller. It also creates a tendency for the nose to want to climb or dive depending on if you're turning with or against the direction of the engines rotation. This makes rotary powered planes quite unstable as the pilot is constantly forced to counteract these gyroscopic forces when flying. In the rotary powered camel you'll come to sense a sort of balance or tipping point that you feel during flight. The plane will give you feedback (tho very subtle) letting you know you're pushing the aircraft close to its limitations. You'll sort of intuitively find ways to adjust your control inputs as you approach this invisible tipping point in order to further extend the planes ability to safely push just a bit beyond what you would expect to be possible. The very moment you exceed that invisible threshold- BAM 3:08 I pushed just a tiny bit too far and the camel bit me in the ass. You'll find in time that the camel and DR1 are flying most effectively when the pilot is able to dance effortlessly up and down that invisible line. When it all clicks for you and your sense of that line suddenly becomes crystal clear, youll be an absolute nightmare for anyone foolish enough to engage in a turn fight against you.
@ethansutton9560
@ethansutton9560 8 лет назад
I have noticed the line you are talking about. Thank you for the comprehensive response . With the DR1 i almost never run over that barrier but i blow my engine much more often doesn't matter most of the time because i normally trade 3 to 1 on it.

A camel should not be applauded at all, this is the very case when a plane is better than a pilot. If the author had himself shot down the camel on an albatross in a fair fight - then yes, he could have been saluted

Soknik01 Yes, yes, it's hard to fly! :-)) And from that, these rat planes are chosen by amateurs to dial scalps! )) It's really good for Dr1 and a camel to fly quite a few pilots. It's a pity to look at these guys on albatrosses that leave you for a turn ((Poor people, yesterday they loaded the game .... Let's fly with you a series of duels? Only I will not sit on the camel and I will not sit down - basically ignore these planes. I'm on an albatross against a camel, and I'm on a puppy against dr1

Hello Sonik01 , I am following your flight missions for quite a while and wanted to ask if you and also which aircraft flight control stick and pedals makes also use. For I have been a few times just stick and keyboard tries to fly, but in most cases, I'm crashed. Can you help me and give me your flight control materials? Here you can reach me: Rescuediver@gmx.ch Thank you for your advice in advance M.Koss Here in German: Hallo Sonik01, ich verfolge deine Flugmissionen schon eine ganze Weile und wollte fragen ,ob Du und auch welche Flugzeugpedale und Flugsteuerungknüppel ,benuzt.

WTF is this?! Where are the health bars and targeting pointers how can you even tell which are enemies and friendly planes!?? Lame

Sorry Kiddo. This is a real combat simulator - not some shoot'em up arcade game. You may unload half your ammo into an plane and it will still get away or you may knock it out of the sky with one burst - all depends where you hit it. In real life, planes didn't have health bars and there were no glowing arrows telling you where the enemy was (though THERE IS an option for it in this game) Sorry, but I prefer air combat games where your kills are determined by where you hit the enemy - you may hit the pilot and kill him, you may blow off a wing, or you bay hit its fuel tank and have it burst into flames) Much more exciting then stupid health bars. It's OK though, I am sure you are into games Like Call of Duty that any 3 year old could beat while blindfolded.
