Great video Patrick, good idea to cover one of the more high end units... From a density point of view, sub $1k for a 1L machine with that much threading is quite something. Arguably could replace several small older machines depending on peak workload.. 👍

Some comments from my 100+ Tiny Experience. The Tool-Less Option is a Screw with a "finger clip" - the once you get with Monitors. I personally don't care, as I always have a Screwdriver on hand. The Included 2.5" bracket is always included, unless the space is used by something else (eg. Graphicscard). - this is true for all ThinkPad/Station Products. Even the cheap E-Series ThinkPads get their Drive Cages included, even if you don't option it.

Absolutely. I don't get though, does this particular system come with riser or just the pcie connector? As I don't see the riser anywhere in the video, just a mention of it and that you should buy the i350 nic. I'd rather buy an SFP/+ NIC there than spending money on RJ45, but I want that riser.

Hey Patrick, I have a question since you’re the guy for all of the colo things. I’m planning on getting a half rack colo in the coming months for some of my servers, but I’m not sure yet whether I should get a switch or router since my provider is just dropping me a 1g up/down cable. I’ve heard from some friends that I should only get a router if I plan to BGP peer with a Tier 1 or 2 and always just use a switch if that’s not the case, but other people have said that I should always try to use a router for futureproofing. What’s your take on this?

What is the Pxx equivalent? Or is there a M90x? I noticed on my P330 that I get the black heatsink, but it is available with the P620 video card, so its necessary. Also 65w option with copper heatsink. Its either or 35w video or 65w processor, and I think the system sometimes will ask for a 135w with a video card + 9700t or 9600t. @ServeTheHomeVideo
@ServeTheHomeVideo 3 года назад
Hi David, I think the challenge with VMware is that the hardware support is generally well behind Linux/ Windows. The one bit to check would be to see how these play with the i219-LM NIC as that is not a server adapter. Most of the AMD models use Realtek NICs which can be a challenge. Generally though I think the 6C/8C models are better value than this 10C unit, but if you just want 25% more physical cores, then this can make sense.

I was waiting with great anticipation for the M90q review so many thanks Patrick! Please let me know if it’s noisy when the cpu is stressed, does the fan work like crazy? Is it audible? I want this unit for music production and silent working is really a big deal for me. To be honest I’m interested more for M90q with intel 10900. Obviously more powerful, but the 2.80ghz base clock to 5.20ghz boost and the 65W TDP makes me wonder about thermals and the fan noise. What’s your opinion?
@ServeTheHomeVideo
@ServeTheHomeVideo 3 года назад
David, the fan certainly runs on these. Near idle ~10W is not an issue to cool quietly. At the 60W+ range the fan was certainly audible. Not bad at all, but as someone who has done a lot of sound insulation on the studio, it would not be something I would put within 1m of a good microphone. It is also much quieter than my desktop when rendering these videos. On the higher wattage units, I think you would be better off with a larger system that can use larger fans.

@@ServeTheHomeVideo I was afraid that you'd say that. Maybe that's why people prefer the new 5nm fanless mac mini. Thank you for this. Actually, lenovo should REALLY REALLY listen to you. I'm so extremely unhappy with their configurator, there's neither photos nor any further description for options like "dust shield" or "vesa mount", how the thing looks and how your system looks right now on the inside!! I have to come here on STH to figure out what I'm buyin in that configurator because there's so many chances of this or that connector not being soldered when ordering without this or that option there, it's impossible to keep track of all these things without any confirmation on what you're getting! I would also get the very minimal config for ram and ssd because I have it all sitting around. But I'm most worried about lack of soldered slots and risers! Thanks for showing your particular config this is extremely helpful. Lenovo should feel ashamed by these reviews. Really I have so many things to say about their website lack of any advanced filters and info. Maybe you should submit something to them, maybe they'll listen to you.

One big factor in having a lot of programs running is cache. - I have a feeling that running a dozen or so processes - Postgres, Redis, web-servers etc will run far better in a machine with more cores especially if there is more cache, - I am really keen on the 8500 but I ran Kubernetes on a 6-core machine and the fan was always spinning. - You keep refering to Kube and the goals of TMM but I for one would be keen to see these machine actually running Kube workloads because I think there will be marked differences between them,

I'm waiting for that THINKDESK45 45% of coupon, picked up a couple of the 4750GE based units with min/max setup only 4GB of single channel memory and a 500GB HDD for only $530, could have gotten it for $488, but i wanted the rear USB-C windows 10 Pro, and the tool-less entry ordered 32GB of tighter timing RAM(still 3200mhz) and a 500GB SSD, swapped the 500GB HDD with 2TB HDDs i had on hand and its a snappy little system with good graphics. Once i can buy a video card i'll probably flip them on ebay for about what i paid for them(plus the cost of RAM and SSD)

I ordered the same machine at the same time with the same offer with the same CPU. I checked my order status for a couple of weeks, and about 6 weeks into the order, the order status changed to "cancelled". I didn't receive an email about the cancellation, they just silently cancelled it. I then had hours of hassle to get them to honour the order, and reordered at the same price, with assurances it was now dealt with with priority, and would not be silently cancelled again. Another few weeks passed, and I was checking the order status - and guess what happened. Yep, cancelled again without my consent or even notifying me with an email. I called up again, and they told me that that model had been discontinued, and they could not fulfil my order. So in the end it cost me a couple of months of waiting. Lenovo seems to have a policy of silent cancellations without informing customers, so I'll be very wary of ordering from them in future. I was gutted. The 4750GE in that form factor, with support for 64GB of RAM was EXACTLY what I was (and am) looking for. This machine is interesting but I'd like either 11th gen, or AMD GPU, in order to be the complete package.
@denvera1g1
@denvera1g1 3 года назад
@@chrisainsley3533 I got an email today saying my last order was canceled Just curious, on your model did you notice the PCIe slot, that was missing the slot? On mine there are clearly traces/pins where the PCIe 16x slot would go, there just isnt a connector like on the Thinkcentre M90Q. Wondering if they'll offer a 'secret' config with a 5900e(12 core 35w) with a decrete GPU somewhat like the M920X
@chrisainsley3533
@chrisainsley3533 3 года назад
@@denvera1g1 I wouldn't worry about future models when they can't even ship current models. The way I see it (this is total speculation) is that the "great chip shortage" has destroyed their supply chain, and they are being forced to cancel orders. Also - if you want something with the 5900e, and a discrete CPU, it's not going to fit in this form factor anyway. It'll need more cooling than a chassis this size can provide. I'm so frustrated that Lenovo really made the best form factor PC, but they can't actually ship it. I can see this situation lasting at least 2 more years.
