I've heard this song before, and I liked the music but didn't pay much attention to the lyrics other than the frequently repeated, "I'm not in love." So i thought this song was about a guy who was friends with a girl and she was in love with him, but he wasn't in love with her, and that he was trying to get her to understand that fact. After carefully listening and reading the lyrics, I realize I was completely wrong and that his protestations are to hide fact that he really is in love, desperately in love, and it's the girl who doesn't love him back. Funny how you can get things so wrong if you don't listen attentively.

He says it’s just a silly phase he’s going through..And, if he calls her… He is definitely fighting his feelings! Afraid to fall hard and be vulnerable and that’s why he’s acting like he doesn’t care .. He’s fooling himself….Did he ever call her? I’m 17 and on the beach on Cape Cod, Mass. with music playing on everyone’s radio, tuned to the same station. Holy smokes does this bring a person back to the place of my youth. Still a great song.

57 years here. I grew up in rural Oklahoma and AM radio was all we had. Who knows when I first heard this, probably on WKY. But tiny speaker AM radios is not the way to enjoy music, especially nuanced and rich tones like this song bears. I keep rediscovering songs I was tired of hearing by 1980, hearing them again in full spectrum.

The summer 1975!had a crush on a red headed girl so sweet saw her a few times she was so nice big brown eyes always made direct eye contact i got butterflies going to see her she worked at a donut shop!she knew i had feelings for her she liked me as well but i never got the courage to ask her out sad!i think we would of been good friends at least but no regrets just a happy feeling when i think of her!

Be thankful you have someone you love. It sounds like she’s been hurt in the past, but she just needs time to trust your love, and really she just needs to grow up. Your ahead of her on that, but don’t give up on loving her. Love isn’t that easy to come by.
