I always wonder why 10cc's most catchy and clever songs always underperform in the US. Take for example 1974's "The Wall Street Shuffle", with references to Howard Hughes, J. Paul Getty, and the Rothchild family, in addition to other cultural topics (i.e. the economy, Wall Street). In the US, the song failed to make the US Billboard Hot 100, settling for a peak position of #103 on the US Billboard Bubbling Under Hot 100 chart. The song did spend four weeks on the US Cash Box Top 100, reaching #84.
Interesting tidbit, "Wall Street Shuffle" debuted on the US Cash Box Top 100 at #100, then crawled to #99 on its second week, make a sizable jump in its third week to #91, and coutinued its promising run on its fourth week to #84, then dropped out of the chart the following week.
"The Wall Street Shuffle" was a Top Ten hit in Belgium (#4), Ireland (#9), the UK (#10), and reached the #1 position in the Netherlands. The song also reached #43 in Germany and #87 in Canada.
