Back in the 80s we used to catch LOTS of bonito in King Harbor (Redondo Beach). Top water lures were the ticket. Old timers used the bubble ‘n feather technique, but I used a jointed Rebel. Good action. Congrats on the top water fish. Another damn good video!
Marg G I guess I’m going to show my age here. You said the old timers used the bubble and fly, but before the bubble and fly we used wooden dowels for the bubble. The dowels were mostly painted red and white. They were heavy enough to cast really far for a long retrieve. We called them splashers. My Dad taught me how to make the dowel and hand tie our red/white flies. We used them in King Harbor, and inside the Seal Beach and Newport jetties. Good Ol’ times!
@@tomloy7746 Yeah--I remember those type of splashers. There were still some guys using those when I first experienced King Harbor about 40 years ago. I still can’t get enough of hooking a fish!

I had to release a nice sized bonito because I forgot my damn cooler and I’ll never forgive myself. I went out this morning and convinced myself to catch clean and cook either a bonito or mackerel if I catch one. Caught some mackerel and I get it now Bearz!! Those babies are delicious!! Mack Slayer ain’t slayin em for no reason.

I'm just getting into JDM rods. I'm looking for a spinning rod similar to a St. Croix legend elite (my favorite rod). St Croix legend elite 7'6" medium action with a fast tip. I'm a old school (prefer) full cork guy, but I can fish anything (length/split grip/etc). I throw 1/2 oz. weights and use 6lb flouro backed with filler braid on my exist and stella. Money not being a factor? I want something to make me believe JDM rods outclass my St Croix. Was looking at Majorcraft but i see Olympic Graphiteleader may be more what I'm looking for. I'm interested in the high end rod that will blow my mind! What's your recommendations? Brand, model, etc? What rod would you get if money was no object.
I was a big fan of the MegaBass series from Japan but it's really personal preference. What I think that feels good in my hands might not be for your but you can also check out Major Craft MS-X Series or the Major Craft Days. Many to do research on. Again, it's all personal preference. Bag limit for Bonito is 5 per person, an additional 5 which makes 10 if the catches are 25"+ or over 5LB each. So you can keep 5 under that but if you go over, the additional 5 has to be of legal size.
Hey Bearz, big fan love the San Diego channel. My buddy and I go out on the boat mostly to the coronados and sometimes the 425. I'd really like to focus more on the bay to have shorter trips. Is live bait necessary or are lures better for bay/shore fishing. Also, is pier fishing dead in san diego?
Pier fishing is a hit and miss. I don't really fish the pier much due to loud music and whatnot, which will interfere with RU-vid guidelines. My best suggestion is to go check out any shore spots on google earth (that is legal to fish) and hope for the best.
