Hey, I never really thought about taking up turkey hunting, but this may be the "ten" minute podcast yo get me interested. You guys should do a whole 90 min podcast about turkey hunting.

Hey man! Turkey hunting is the most addicting hunting in my opinion. The only thing that could limit you is the state you live in.

another major plus is simply its application in low light situations, high contrast easy target acquisition especially around pumpkin time.

Thinking of doing the same. Would that hold up using 12g slugs or just max out at more of a 16g bird shot kind of load?

I've found that the eotech reticle (65 MOA circle) is about the height of a turkey at 50 yds so it's great for a last second range check.

A few months ago, I bought a Crossfire red dot for my Benelli M4, and you can imagine my surprise when sighting in required absolutely no adjustments. Nothing to say but go Vortex, I guess.

Can't recommend this enough. The close in shots at awkward angles is where this pays dividends.

Another benefit is the ability to get a good sight picture without having to keep your cheek pressed so firmly against the stock. Me, my GF, the kids, and everyone else all seem to be a bit less scared of the high recoil loads with a red dot vs irons. This generally leads to less anticipation and flinching from my personal experience. And therefore a bit better accuracy and shot placement...

Good point recommending taking a practice shot at 10 yards. From my own experience, my shot pattern at 10 yards is not much bigger than a golf ball. I have watched numerous videos on patterning the shotgun for turkey and this is the only one that recommended taking a ten yard practice shot to check the pattern. All the other videos are concerned with checking patterns at long range but neglect a short range pattern check. I would not be surprised to hear stories this season about hunters who miss turkeys at 10 yards or so because they never checked their pattern at ranges less than 20 yards. Good video.

Using an old Bushnell with multiple moa size dots that was given to me. I get rapid target acquisition and ability to hunt through Alabama brush. Works fantastic! After three birds this spring, I gifted myself with a new reflex sight. Can't wait to pattern with my new choke.

In my experience turkey loads are the hardest recoiling loads. To me they feel like they kick noticeable harder than 00 buck or slugs. I think it’s because they have a ton of lead in them and they’re always high brass. A lot of slugs and buckshot have slightly brass than turkey loads and the slugs aren’t usually more than 1 1/8oz and buckshot is around 1oz whereas I’ve seen 2 3/4 turkey loads with around 1 1/4 or 1 1/2oz of shot. Those turkeys are tough creatures.

Ive had red dots on my turkey guns for 8 years now. Had a millet on my 12 gauge until it finally died this year. But now have vortex venoms on both 12’s and my 20 gauge. Us older guys need it…52 here…my brother is 7 years older then me and used to make fun of my red dot….until he tried it….now his turkey gun has a venom too. Anything to help and make sure Im taking a good ethical shot.

Shoot at 15 yards, dial the dot to the spot where the shot hit. You should be good. I would recommend using loktite on the screws on a saddle mount. My screws were backing off until I did that.

Red dots are great until your battery dies in the middle of a hunt. That happened to my son two years ago and I decided to upgrade to a better option: the Vortex Crossfire II 1-4x24 with an illuminated reticle. This scope has a red dot while the battery lasts, provides a much better field of view than any red dot, offers a little magnification and has crosshairs to fall back on when all else fails. I can even use this scope to shoot skeet.

To me most important reason for scopes and red dots on shotgun is the adjustments, As you know shotgun barrels can be off then they add a rib on top can be off, correcting would have to bend the barrel to correct zero. Kentucky wind age is not what you want, red dots take that away, scopes take that away, optics simply gives assurances of putting the shot where you want and expect once you patterned and have right load, just like rifle scopes help you put the bullet where you want, you see, of coarse right load, right bullet, matched to the twist, wind, thickness of air, the distant, earth spin, harmonics, stock, trigger, bedding etc basic same with all gun science, I use optics on everything simply better with them, is not hard to figure out, buy them put them on zero shoot and you will see the differences and never go back to bead sight, Red Dot sights are actually taken storm on handguns. quick and simple, allows looking at the target both eyes open and simple put the dot on target fire, not looking at the target, back sight, front sight, focus then fire see difference.

just picked up a saddle mount and a sparc solar red dot. Having a heck of a time trying to get the mount on the scope to line up and get it on the saddle mount. The screws and the middle tab (underneath the scope) seem to prevent me from threading the screws in. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Just a little pointer. If you are running a red dot. Let the scope warm up. What i mean is DONT take it strait from the cool house out to the warm outside and shoot 3 3.5 turkey loads. I have broke 2 different brands by doing this. This was on an 870
@HerbertHopkins799
@HerbertHopkins799 2 года назад
Wow. Wouldn't think a temperature variable would break a red dot. Maybe they just couldn't handle the recoil.
@jasonsmith5077
@jasonsmith5077 2 года назад
@@HerbertHopkins799 i. Never have any issues while hunting but the scope is allowed to come up to ambient temp before firing. Both times this has happened the shotgun was brought strait out of my house to the back deck and fired. I keep all my firearms loaded,and at the ready un cased and in the open. My house is kept at 67* year round. Out side temps on both occasions were in the 90’s. And firing 3” #5 shot 12 gauge.

They’re a lot of people putting RD on duck guns now. If you use a RD with both eyes open it’s allows you to keep focused on the bird and get to shoulder quickly.
