Insanely fun, accessible, low recoil, all ages welcome, and as casual or competitive as you want to make it - the shotgun shooting sports are king for these reasons and more. But what’s the difference between trap, skeet, and sporting clays? Mark Boardman, Jimmy Hamilton and resident clays expert, Ryan Muckenhirn, break down the big three, so you can head to your local club and start breaking targets.

Extremely timely for me. I am 63 years old and shot my first Shotgun /Trap / Skeet / Shooting Clay event two weeks ago. I was instantly addicted. There was a gentleman that had an "inexpensive" 12k shotgun that gave me killer advice during the event. As soon as I got home I started looking for a "proper" shotgun.😄😄😄. I have NEVER had so much fun shooting. Supposedly I was hitting all the hard shots. I now understand why people spend so much time and money participating in this sport. So much to learn and improve on. Love it! Thank you for this.

It’s one of the most fun and addictive things I ever done growing up my dad was a gun fanatic I was shooting around the south at 15,16 years old with 10,15,20,30k guns he was so wild about it he ordered 3 promatic throwers and built a true trap range then his own version of 5 stand and rabbit presentation got older and got into the real world but there is nothing I enjoy more than going over dragging some stuff out and playing

You should do a follow up episode to go over I-skeet and bunker. I know you touched on I-skeet but a good break down with contrast and comparison between American trap and skeet to international skeet and trap could be fun.

Trap Skeet and 5 Stand and Skeet are fun. Shooting Trap is like shooting Pheasant’s as most flush in front of you and are going away even with a Pointing Dog. Skeet is like shooting Quail, Ruffle Grouse and Dove and Waterfowl. If you want to be good at Sporting and 5 Stand shoot both Trap and Skeet this will teach you most Sporting Clay shots. As far as Gun Type Shoot what makes you Happy !

A few years back, I used to shoot in a local skeet league, and on the weekends we would go practice and have fun. One game we would inevitably end up playing was called "jap trap". It's a hoot to play with your buddies, because you're basically talking smack and poking fun at each other the whole time. You guys should try it... here's how it's played. Each shooter starts with a box of 25 shells. You play it on a field that is a combination trap and skeet on the same field, because you're going to be shooting trap targets from the skeet pads. First shooter starts on the first skeet pad, calls for the bird and shoots. If he hits it, he's done at that pad. If he misses, he has to keep shooting until he hits it. After everyone has shot and hit the bird, you move to the next skeet pad and repeat. This goes on from pad to pad. When you run out of shells you're done. Last guy with ammo left is the winner. Fun stuff! 😁

While I have a great Beretta over/under for everything, I actually grab my Beretta AL390 most often for shooting it all. Though, last time I shot sporting clays was a spur of the moment thing my coworkers kidnapped me for when I got to work, so I used one of their Citoris and that was a daisy.

Jim, Mark, and Ryan, for the smoothbore .22, you want crimped rounds and the smallest chalk targets you can find, it may take a couple hits to shatter them, but the chalk will puff and give you an indication of hits and misses. It’s a short range game too!

Shooting sports are important. There is currently a bill (4420) in Massachusetts barring youths up to 15 years old from participating in shooting sports including skeet trap and clays shooting in a clear effort to eliminate shooting culture in the state.

So my only experience with a shotgun has been in 3 gun. Not the same sport not the same gun. This past weekend I went dove hunting with some buddies, didn't hit limit but also didn't get 0 so overall good time. That said which would be the best sport of the main 3 mentioned to practice for the next hunt. My club offers all 3, I'm thinking skeet. Any recommendations on the type of shotgun. I liked the semi I used over the O/U for the easy of loading between birds.

Ive been wanting a Browning Sweet Sixteen specifically to shoot clays and be different. I used to occasionally shoot clays for fun at a fudd range. I used a buddy's A5 12g and my own Maverick88 12g w/ 28" choked barrel. For funsies and to upset said fudds I would also slap on an 18" cylinder bore barrel and still consistently break clays with regular old 2-3/4 target load.

I used a SAGA12 on a fudd range just to see the reactions 😂. It made them more pissed to see me break 19/25 clays with it lol.
