Underwood hasn’t spiked their ammo prices during the ammogeddon. Supporting them only seems right since they are doing such a good job keeping stock and reasonable prices.

When I moved to AK over 8 years ago, I was told to buy a 357 Mag and file the front sight down for bear protection. When I asked why file the front sight down, I was told it was so I could get the barrel in my mouth easier for when the bear mauls me.

Keep in mind that 357 mag has more potential than per round than 10mm because it has more case capacity and can be loaded way hotter because revolvers don’t have to same pressure limitations that semiautos do, and with a 180 gr bullet 357 Mag has more Sectional density than a 200gr 10mm, theoretically having a advantage when compared at identical velocity’s.

Great video and I like that you stuck with the same ammo. I've done some similar testing with .357, but I don't have a 10mm to run it against. I have noticed though, that different revolvers have significantly different cylinder gaps and that this has a lot to do with overall performance, as much as barrel length. My next goal is to run a 10mm side by side against my Coonan 357 with similar ammo to see what I get. Running 125gr .357 through it I was seeing velocities in the 1560 FPS range vs the same round from my Ruger GP-100 4" at about 1500 FPS, but that is here in CO at about 6K ft.

When I was young, I'm 74 now, and I went where the great bears roam, my side arm was a Ruger SS Blackhawk 4 5/8 barrel in 45 Colt. My hand load was Nosler 300 grain partitions at 1,100-1,200 fps. I figured I had only 2 maybe 3 shots to stop a bear on the move from 25 yards. I saw a fair number of bears, only one got close enough for me to smell his breath and hear him pop his chops. The Ruger was in hand with the hammer back, lucky for both of us , he changed his mind. I would liked to have a .454 Casull! The only thing I ever shot with my Ruger was a Chevy small block, WOW, made scrap out of it. Still own the gun.

Not only did 10 mm make it one jug farther than .357 Mag, but it did so with a better terminal ballistic shape that had a much wider expanded diameter that .357 Mag. I'd call that a pretty big win in my book.

It depends, on average 10mm heavyweight 180gr-200gr bullets do better than heavyweight 180gr 357 magnum, but when you compare lightweight bullets the 357 magnum quickly overshadows the 10mm & it goes back & forth.

When accompanying my adult son on his elk hunt this past year (in grizzly country), I carried a 12 gauge shotgun with Brenneke's slugs and a .357 mag with Buffalo Bore loads as a backup. Whereas I would have preferred a .44 mag, I find that the recoil is too great for my old a$$. My logic is that I could get more lead into the bruin with the .357 than the .44 mag.

Reliability is a must and I have never had a FTF, FTE etc carrying a revolver in bear country for almost 5 decades. Running speed loaders and being quick with practice you can reliabily rain down some lead pretty fast and I have seen some big bears fold up pretty quickly from a 357. That was a really inconsistent box of ammo, but, it reminds me also, of when I told you, that .357 Magnum, is not more powerful than 10mm. Especially in the heavier for caliber loads. They do over lap each other very well, and sometimes the .357 will out penetrate the 10mm, depending on what’s being compared. Here, already it’s not comparing apples to apples, because the bullet weights are different, and on top of that, crappy, inconsistently loaded .357 rounds. They are really close performers to each other, but it appears Underwood can’t keep people on the job, that have the care or skill, to produce consistent loads. It could be that the powder used doesn’t meter well in their equipment, or they frankly have an employee that just does not care. I’m sure it doesn’t pay well. The components are top notch, the quality of assembly is not. There are too many variables that can make them both beat each other depending on what’s being used, quality, consistency and component wise, and then the actual guns they are fired from.
@boedude8496
@boedude8496 4 года назад
@@dafawty9thstate830 as you alluded to a cartridge is only as good as it is made. that is also true for power. off the shelf ammo is quite a bit different than handloads, including bb and underwood. the 357 is capable of greater velocities and energies. since different calibers do better or worse with different weights there is no legit way to compare performance by a specific weight. you can only go by light, medium, and heavy for caliber, picking the best for each. or as many subdivisions you want. it mostly comes down to preference, revolver or auto. and some play the round count game. chances are, if you play the odds, the same job will get done with either

The reliability of feeding from the TC-the 180 gr weight which is adequately heavy without eating up case capacity and finally the 10 in a 6 inch self loader with 14+1 capacity is just about as ideal as it gets.

@@AlaskanBallistics I mean I get the fear factor and all( though I didn’t grow up around brown bear country I grew up around alligator country) . But autos are subject to failure to feed and such not to mention some are more complex. Glocks are a little different in that they utterly simplified the automatic pistol leaving out safety’s and double action - it’s just pull trigger and go. Having said that you must still rely on proper function whereas revolvers are simple : keep pulling trigger until empty!! I guess since I grew up with revolver not automatic pistol( until adult) it’s in my blood. I love auto pistols more than anybody ! I have a beretta performance X competition pistol( among others) but my SW 686 plus is what’s by my bed not beretta because in the middle of night I don’t want to fiddle around with safety or other issues just get r done. I don’t own any glocks so there is that. The increased ammo is really main advantage unless maybe you say faster rate of fire. @Ben Woodcock If you get off seven shots at a bear, you weren't in danger when you started shooting. Most bear attacks don't give you enough time to get off four shots. If you can't get it done in two, you might as well carry a note asking to be buried with all that extra ammo.

And the .45 aarp doesn't have the bone crushing power you preach compared to .357 mag, 10mm, 41 magnum, .45 super, .460 rowland, 44 magnum etc.. it doesn't penetrate as well as those. Penetration to the vitals is what kills, not bone crushing knockdown power or what ever magical non proven non scientific term you believe in. .45-70 is of course, a great choice.

@@AlaskanBallistics I once watched another hunter empty his 1911 into a treed black bear sow in eastern Tennessee. She was big for a Tennessee bear, about 400 if I remember correctly (been at least 30 years ago now). She came down that tree after him with a vengeance, fangs bared and teeth snapping, and another hunter stopped her with a double shot of 12 gauge slugs. Upon skinning her out, all the 45 balls were found barely below the skin, stopped dead by the tough muscle of that old girl, (he was taking body shots only to see how well they would work in a crunch). Needless to say, he changed his carry gun after that little exercise to a 44 mag, right after he changed his shorts! lol

There are instances of bear charging from like 8 feet away without warning and hunters couldnt even bring up the rifle they were ALREADY holding and it fling the 11 lb magnum rifle 20 feet in the air just by slightly grazing (if it were head on the guy would've been dead). Having looked at a lot of numbers and penetration tests, 10mm seems to be just about the best round out there for applications other than concealed carry (I'm not saying it can't be a good CC round, but lots of people have criteria for a CC gun that would rule out lots of 10mm pistols. If you don't plan to CC, those criteria go out the window). I think it has the best balance of mass, velocity and surface area of pretty much all the calibers out there. Carry it in a full size or competition/long slide gun, and you've got yourself a hell of a package.

9mm for the hoods. 10mm for the woods. I use to carry a 44 magnum in the mountains but switched to 10 mm. With max loads 10mm is about on par with 41 magnum. Be careful with that. A lot of 10mm is loaded to 40 S&W pressures so get you some good Underwood, Buffalo Bore or Garret. I figured it was a no brainer to make the switch. 16 rounds of 10 mm beat 6 rounds of 44 any day of the week. Since I carry a 9mm Glock daily, the 10mm Glock feels familiar to me and I shoot Glocks way more than my revolvers. I also don’t want to be staging a double action trigger pull as a Grizzly is closing the distance. So I get nearly 3 times the rounds in a far less recoiling gun, that’s lighter, cheaper to buy, same trigger pull, same sights (Ameriglo), grip and battery of arms as my daily carry. And 10mm isn’t that expensive to shoot. Definitely more than 9mm but cheaper than 44 mag. Actually about as cheap or slightly under 357 mag in my neck of the woods. Another thing people don’t think about is how loud a 357 or 44 is when firing without ear plugs. That cylinder gap with those high pressure rounds can really do a number on your ears. If I have to fire without earplugs I’d rather do it with a 10 mm. I had always heard of the power of a 10mm but just figured it was just powerful for an auto loader. Nope. It is truly in the magnum class and can hang with 357 and 41 mag all day long. If you haven’t shot one you are missing out. And equally amazing is the pleasant recoil compared to a powerful revolver. I’m glad to see it making a come back. It’s an awesome round and in a Glock 20, an awesome gun.

Is the 357 really that much louder out of a revolver ?
@survivalguyfyi5718
@survivalguyfyi5718 3 года назад
@LightningAssault.com . A 357 Mag is among the loudest if not the loudest common cartridge. Excluding things like 500S&W. A 357 mag comes in at 164.3 db. A 41 Mag is 143.2 db. Note that the volume doubles every 3 decibels so there’s about a 34% increase from a 41 mag to a 357 mag. I could t find numbers on a 10mm but a 45 ACP is 157db. So a 357 mag is over twice as loud as a 45 ACP. I own and shoot both 10mm and 357. I can confidently say the 357 is louder. Couldn’t tell you by how much but it’s noticeable. My guess by 60-70%.
@sctm81
@sctm81 3 года назад
@@survivalguyfyi5718 wow. Thanks for sharing. That's a lot louder. I had assumed that the chamber pressure would have made 10mm and 357 similar in loudness but maybe the revolver and slightly larger cartridge of the 357 might have something to do with it or whether the 10mm is truly hot loaded.

Good video ! I've noticed a little difference in advertised velocities and my revolvers and semi autos. I tested certain ammo brands in both my 10mm Glock and 610 Smith and Wesson revolver. The Revolver always had a slightly lower velocity. This is due to the cylinder gap in a revolver. The gases just kind of dwell there and escape while a semi auto forces the gases down the barrel, or allow them to escape in the short rechambering time.
@AlaskanBallistics
@AlaskanBallistics 4 года назад
Very true. Thanks for watching. Did you notice this big of velocity drop in your. 357 magnums.
@Edmondson_Avenue
@Edmondson_Avenue Год назад
No disrespect, but that's bullshit and already been debunked, modern revolvers have the tightest cylinder gap and much stronger forcing cones that don't break as easily as older revolvers, they don't lose that much gas, plus the revolver has a true 6" barrel and the Glock 40 kkm barrel is 6.5" but you only using 5.3 because of the chamber and overall length of the cartridge, also if you don't use at least a 22lb recoil spring you're losing gasses through the breach.
@AlaskanBallistics

Umm not true. MAC has a video on which 10mm revolvers don't get the same velocities as a 10mm semi auto with the semi auto having less barrel length.

Great comparison. My brother lived in Alaska and had a black bear charge him in his backyard. He used a ruger blackhawk 44mag in 7 1/2 inch barrel and it stop the bear in its tracks. And it turned and ran aways and died. Also he was hunting with his buddy and he shot a Grizzly with a 338 Sako rifle and it took off running into the brush. They fallowed the blood trail for aways till he stopped bleeding. They have so much fat it must of slowed his blood trail down. Not many hand guns are more powerful then a 338 Sako. I stay in my pickup in Grizzly areas. Lol.
