Great vid. On my M3, I recently switched at the last oil service to the BMW OEM twin power oil that comes in the blue bottles. They state you get better fuel economy. Noticed after a few months (1000 miles), the performance dropped compared to the 10W-60 Castro’s Edge Supercar. With the Castrol oil, the engine feels smoother like butter. Just my observation and will try another oil like Liqu Moly next time to test out each brand.

HI i live in a warm climate, my experienced mechanic uses 5w30 on my M3 e46. Do you think this is a good idea or should I insist he uses 10w60? Thanks in advance.

Thanks for your message, ideally I wouldn't go thinner than 5w 50. Do you drive the car hard? The 10w 60 is thick, but very protective on the m3 high revving nature as described in this video as m3 power comes from revs. In my opinion you shouldn't go thinner than 5w 50, but 10w 60 is preferred. Also if you continue to use 5w 30 for your preferred reason I suspect low end torque then make sure you top up the oil at dip stick h level. I recommend 10w 60 or 5w 50 5w 30 too thin. My opinion no responsibility . Thanks you

Best explanation for non technical people thanks for the educational video! How often do you change oil in 3 to 4000km correct? Not to fast? If you always drive with care and keep it level Me also have good experience with 10w60. Highway topspeed runs with oil temperatures up to 130 140 no problem for the engine if driven with care

Thank you! Yes keep the oil level top up, have the oil bar on display if drops top, quite often many time is lack of oil. 10w 60 is for high rev engine. Well done 👍 changing oil at 3000, 4000 is good, but keep the oil level at the top line is very important, the three bars, on the Speedo, imagine having 300 to 500cc less oil in the engine can be worse than having older oil. Thanks for your comment.

No unless it's already consuming oil. Or massive leak. Remember you can increase lubrication by making sure that the dipstick is at the H level. So fill up the dipstick at h maximum line. Usually thats another 500cc vs oil at mid line, dont go over H. The extra protection of 500cc is a lot. If the engine has done 250,000km then maybe 5w 50 is maximum weight if it is chewing oil or consuming. The straight six is one of thr best bmw engine that lasts long time. Good luck any thing else left me know. Thanks

I know this is NOT related to the M3, but I’m very curious if you could provide some insight on a new car I added to my fleet which would be a 2022 M240i (since you seem very knowledgeable) BMW calls for 0w-20 and that is the suggested oil. I always beat on the car and live in cold climate but it’s only summer driven. 0w-20 is way too thin, no? Would 5w-30 be a better engine oil?

@timcheou5649
@timcheou5649 Год назад
Hi thank you for your kind words. In your case, for a BMW M240 I would definitely and definitely use 0w 20 providing that you recheck with user manual, or the oil cap on the engine that's the recommend viscosity. New engines these days runs completely different way to the M3 era in this video. Two very important points here for your engine 1. Please definitely follow the viscosity that manufacture suggest, either on the engine oil cap, or user manual. 2. Must follow the oil certification number, there will be an oil certified number or type, those are crucial so it won't damage the coating inside. 3. Usually thinner oil is fine if the engine is built for that thinness, but do remember to top up, the problem with thinner oil is if the oil level falls below the dipstick, it won't have the K and G jelly effect as mentioned in this video, but... Been thin gives better low end torque which is what today's engine is all about, its trying to mimic electric motor car or other way around don't know. Make sure you check the dipstick level probably will be on your dashboard or idrive screen. Don't let it go below middle line, prefer to keep in top h level not over. So in short, yes thinner oil is fine if facture state is what it needs. Must check oil level, it's more important for thinner oil, going thicker oil is not good idea if the engine is not built for thicker oil. I hope this helps if you need any additional info or experience some issue with thinner factory recommend oil please feel free to ask. Good day! My english is not the best sorry. Thinner oil utilise speed of flow to protect, so volume is critical. Thicker oil is little bit more acceptable to lower oil volume as it's more elastic. Thinner oil much better for low end torque, for fuel economy. So big yes if your m240 state thinner oil, it will be fine the oil flow speed will compensate all your concerns except, if the oil runs low like below dipstick mid line, I would concern that it won't have enough juice to flow fast and protect. Hope this helps, now if you put thicker oil on none designed engine its a bad idea.. because it's too thicker to reach some of the area of the engine, unless if the engine is modded it spit out oil, but that's another story. If your user manual state 5w 30 is ok for your engine then yes, if doesn't don't use. 5w 30 will be good for driving hard. Will be little harder to drive during low end torque, but long journey, performance reduce is less and better performance as engine gets hotter vs 0w 20, but engine must support this viscosity, and certification must be followed. Not sure your engine cert no for oil, old days was llo1 LL 02 etc But the 0w 20 could also meet your needs, but then it's a formulation issue, brands issue, but must be BMW your engine certified oil if switching.

@timcheou5649
@timcheou5649 4 года назад
Hello, I am not a specialist in audi or mercedes. From my limited knowledge that mercedes should not go over 5w 50 as maximum thickness. For the audi i am not sure. please refer to the user manual for both cars. thicker is not always better, its mostly on how the engine eas originally designed by the engine engineer, please refer to user manual. too thick on a not designed for 10w 60 engine could and will protect less because that engines design is for thinner formula that requires faster flowing. please refer to the user manual, usually mechanic would advise thicker oil if 1. there us a major leak 2. there is a major internal engine problem that it is consuming large qty of oil. and usuallg one does not planning to keep the car with 1 and 2 situations, so they step up oil thickness to simply "get them by" before selling. the best viscocity are what engine bay recommends and uset manual recommends, your car will always run the best on factory recommend thickness and spec. refer user manual. thanks take care

Very educational video Tim. It is much appreciated. I bought my Melbourne Red m3 a year ago, 86k on the clock. I changed the motor mounts, header gaskets, collector gaskets, rod bearings out with BE bearings, arp bolts and throttle actuators as preventive maintenance. Im still running Redline 10w60. I’ve been letting it warm up properly like you explained. So far so good. Just out of curiosity you said you were an old hot rod guy. What’s your opinion on REDLINE 10w60 oil for the e92 m3.
@timcheou5649
@timcheou5649 3 года назад
Hi Nate, Redline was once the very best oil among my mechanic gangs, it was probably one of the first oils to have double ester if I remember the correct English words, it was super heat resistant but lately in the recent 3 years, from all the mid night racing, things have gone down hill with them, the constant high revings heat resistant have gone down. My mechanic gangs now use and recommend Yacco, penrite and Motul, prob so far everyone says good things about Yacco, now general rule speaking, the better the formula on heat resistant the long the warm up time will need,and the worse low rev performance will be, but the hotter the engine gets, the closer you are to be in heaven. Example Castrol original m oil, is a probably the best oil during cold start, if one was lazy to warm up drive off the Castrol will get into operate temp faster than any other brand, but it's the worse oil for drag racing both in street mountain or anything, it does perform well in low rev and it's good for 2 red lights then it's gone.. BMW assume M3 driver were daily use and it sold M3 with track car spirit but assumed the driver were business people that needed a all rounder oil, well at least that was the day a of 2008s, it was until GTR and newer fast cars came out people start to overclock the M3 exceeding it's design LIMIT of the 08s , remember people behave little more different then the M3 outclassed most of cars then in 08, you didn't have to try as hard therefore easier on oil, Castrol was enough. Oil consumption was less, as the power was quite scary then. By going into a race oil like Motul, Yacco, and Penrite with double ester formulated for track, it's like going from a good PS4 Michelin tires to a slick, the slick tire glues but warm up needed not good for wet, double ester is not good for garage queen vs standard full synth as it absorbe water, full synth is good for garage queen. So to answer in short, factory oil is a good daily commute oil for people got no time to warm up, commute occasion thrash enjoying race car spirit of M3 in 08 standard. But now to match today's cars lot of max out needed then go for any good 10w 60 race formulated oil will be better, there are things better then redline, but warm up will be longer. For girly use, occasional taste of performance long garage queen longer oil change factory full synth is good, less warm up time good low rev but not too many max out pls. Try to keep under 110c, the engine will loose power when too hot, shift up to 7th till it drove to 105x then thrash again, double ester will buy you way more time, cool down quicker. For max out all the time go for race engine but don't garage queen it, longer warm up. Hope this helps, but I don't know your drive habit for me now, any 10 60 cover my drive habit but if was 10 years ago during my days of thunder with IPE and all that. I needed Double ester 10 60 and changes every 3000km, now 10,000km is fine I kept oil at full level top arrow not over, hope this helps, especially if you do initial d style, then formula needs to be important, say if I was driving with you with my Castrol you were in double ester you can drive 30mins and cool little by Goto 7th gear with good speed letting oil cooler hit air, my Castrol maybe 5 to 10mins, so watch oil temp and find best formula for your engine that suit your driving style Oil guage and oil temp are there on 2008s for these reason, bad formula oil will consume but there is no definitive answer, if oil consumption due to too much heat add right away, if keep temp under 110c it is super safe. Enjoy the car will last forever the spirit lives on of the M3.

@@naterockwell7735 The engine is design to take heavy abuse as a reason why OEM recommend 10w 60, I believe most M3 engine fail are 90% cold start and floor it many many people cannot wait 10 to 15 min until 10 60 is ready at 98c operating temp. 10% never check oil gauge allowing the oil go down middle mark that's like lesser 500cc a bottle of Evian amount of of less to circulate inside engine, always keep top up at top arrow. 5% when tracking not caring oil temp. In final M3 is a very robust engine, the factory came out with a good oiler cooler with tough transmission, the car will go out of its way to help the driver to win the race, it's all about racing, but even ford vs Ferrari movie notice the drivers always check oil temp. It is a great car, if followed race driver concept and ways, the engine will never fail. I might do a video soon how hard I push the M3 in a safe way, for me the car is always robust and I am confident that it won't fail on me. I drive it with full confidence, as I check engine oil temp during spirit drive. In final download the factory user manual. It has some info 90% people don't read, eg nosiy drive shaft been normal, oil guage temp and etc. It's a good race car

No it will be too thick. Not recommended. Thicker is not always better, M3 habe the mechanical space for 10w 60. I think and I am not 100 percent right on this way 5w 50 is likely the thickest you can use for the 325 straight six. What are you using now, make sure you top up the oil at H level of the dipstick if you want the ultimate protection, not over H though.

Great video, I have a Euro E36 m3. I recently did a oil change and I decided to put 5w-40 in, now I am having second thoughts after watching this.

The 10w is the cold start, so it only warms up little slower then 5w but 60 weight film strength will be vitall for the M3 engine at high revs, please make sure you have oil always top at top arrow line because in middle it's 500cc lesser oil to run around in the engine. You will notice with 5w 40 rev if you track it or drive hard the engine will feel choking sluggish or hear metallic sound, when it happens it means the oil is not taking heat well it's thining up. Thanks for your feed back.

5w50 is better for daily usage but i recommend 10w60 for hot summers and track use
