How on earth is it possible to sing like that. The two final notes that Stephanie hits are just amazing. Goosebumps. I don’t think that someone match up with her
Was blessed to see this very revival at the Orpheum Theater in San Francisco. It was pure pure magic!!!! I left with a full heart and walked on air for days!!!
Thank you for this wonderful upload!! Goosebumps! She's phenomenal. I saw this in Boston and I'll never forget it. So funny too! She has one of the greatest voices on earth!
suckittomcat l agree with you. l saw it 4 times because l wanted to learn the songs. You can watch the entire show now, but the quality isn't good. If you loved the show as much as l did, it doesn't matter.
I was super blessed to see this. I had to be only 4 or so yrs old and I guess it must have been when the touring show visited DC, but I LOOOOOVE the play SOOOO MUCH, I became addicted to the album, got a crush on Nipsey Russel (the Tin Man) and was bitten by the music and theater love bug that is STILL with me today!! The movie w/ MJ and Diana Ross can't even hold a penny to the actual play. It was surrounding, consuming, and totally and completely awesome....especially as a tiny little kid that I was!!! 🤗🤗🤗💗💗💗💗👍👍👍👍👍
Stephanie’s gift of singing is EXTRAORDINARY beyond belief! This song, in particular, brings me to tears every time😭! Stephanie & both her lions, Ted Ross & Gregg Baker…simply MESMERIZING!🥰😍
She has such projection in her voice without screaming. It doesn't seem like it should come out of her like that she's so tiny. On top of all that it sounds so beautiful to the ear.
Why was this never put to video??? What was the conspiracy to keep this from the public and not share the profits with Ms. Mills? My mind cannot process it. This is a national treasure which should be shared with world. It should be at the Smithsonian. Who are the people responsible for keeping this from being put to DVD? It is a terrible crime.
You where my youth ,and listen to your album for years ,I was only fourtin when l went to see you in the wiz wondering Singer always loved God bless you
@@leewilson4437 Thanks for the info but I saw the show live and it was wonderful. A DVD version would be comprised of the best performances of the show. The quality would be really good as well. XO
What the heck Stephanie?? What's in your throat to make that sound at 2:36 .."Your a Lion-(ohhh), a Lion-(ohhh)". I'm sure it wasn't written that way, lol. You just come up with all sorts of stuff when you sing.. you go girl!
Went to NewYork with my dancing school. We went to the Theater of Harlem. Then we got to see this very play. 1970 something. And we seen Bubbling brown sugar. Amazing
I saw this show when it was in Chicago, and apart from Stephanie, Gregg got the loudest applause at the curtain call. :-3 And I know that she's a little bitty thing, but that is without a doubt the tallest Lion I've ever seen!
You are absolutely correct....the Lion had the loudest standing ovation at the end of the show when they were in Detroit during that time. The second time around you could tell they toned down his character and he was not the same.
That's because Stephanie Mills was the featured star considering her career....but to be upstaged by her co star didn't sit well with someone behind the scenes.
@@elihubey5557 Oh, good grief. Nobody could upstage her, and anyway I'm sure she wouldn't have minded at all. I mean, it's not like she's Diana Ross, for Pete's sake.
Nah, I wouldn't say that if I were you because Stephanie actually became bigger than Diana Ross... I'm not sure if you know her and her legendary status outside of The Wiz but if not I highly suggest you do because after the run of The wiz in 1979 she recorded her crossover album/single "What cha gonna do With My Lovin" and ever since then she rose to the top passed Diana. She started to sell Gold and platinum records and she cemented her name big time when she came out with Sweet Sensation and created a bigger Crossover hit with "Never Knew Love like this Before which won her 2 Grammy's and a American Music award and the rest is history. So at this time of this 1984 Revival Stephanie was a national star (and had released her new album which had the no.1 dance hit which crossed over to the UK internationally). That's why in the commercial and promotional billboards she was used as marketing. So it was very odd for Stephanie not to receive the biggest ovation, now she did get a standing ovation but Gregg got a louder one. Now think about this, The Lion has wayyy more lines that bring humor to the show while Dorothy's lines are more calm and laid back due to the character so she has to use her voice to receive ovations and applause.
@@sheismymom Not with a song like this that has a pulse and beat. She was purposefully backbeating/backphrasing. I don't necessarily agree with it, because it's self indulgent. That being said - she is and was a REMARKABLE talent and vocalist. She was truly amazing in this role. But musical self aggrandizement is obnoxious no matter who does it. In her defense, though - people came to see her do "what Stephanie Mills can do," so....bless those ticket sales!!
@@jasonmarks80 I'm going to have to agree with you. While Stephanie Mills still blew this revival out of the water. I prefer her singing in the original production. Sometimes less is more.
These vocalist sound amazing. However, I kept hearing the orchestra and the performers at different tempos throughout the pit wanted to go faster, and the singers wanted to sing this song.!! Lol
