#11 Easy teak deck removal part 1

This is part one of two parts showing how I remove the teak decking on Wanda. I am choosing to plane the deck of as opposed to lifting it off with a chisel/crowbar which seems to be the more common choice for removing the teak deck. I also find a good use for the plug cutter bit which is designed for making wooden bungs.

good luck with it! Are you planning on laying down new teak again after or leaving it bare? I'm considering getting pre-made teak decking that you just vacuum seal down to the deck.... waiting on getting some prices to see if that's affordable :)

Hey I would love to hear your thoughts and plan for what you are going to do. Are you planning on using pre-fabricated teak decking at all?

As for screws with clogged PH2 heads, remember that a PH1 bit fits in the same mark and when clogged there is usually space enough to press the smaller PH1 deeper than a PH2 bit. Works fine in most situations as long as you have tension on it. 👌🏽

P.S. a left handed drill bit walks a phillips screw out very quickly. Vise grips as a last resort. In a really bad case they make or you can fabricate if you want a bit for the purpose much like your plug cutter that come in sizes to just fit around the screw shank. By drilling down the dept of the wood decking you can lift the teak off and then get the screw stubs with the vise grips.

Works better to pry with a bigger screwdriver for better leverage and then use a pick to knock out the sealant. Cut the pick back to just the width of the phillips so one swipe cleans each slot.

Another trick with phillips heads packed with adhesive like that is to heat up a screwdriver with a torch and push it into the screw head. As long as it's a heat-affected glue you'll have no troubles. Figure out how hot with some practice - red hot is not necessary at all. Get the screw started coming out and by then it will have cooled back down enough to come back with the drill-driver.

I haven't seen a proper teak deck for a while, the likes of sunseeker etc use this horrible pre-machined wafer thin sections of teak with the sikoflex grooves already applied and then vacuum bond them to the deck. The fact they are so thin means you will have to continuously apply oil to keep the wood conditioned, but then the people who buy those craft I noticed didn't know a forward head from a flybridge (all the gear and no idea)
