Minor whoops, folks. The PSP Go CAN be connected to a TV through a cable specially designed for it or through a cradle. You just can't use the same cable that the the 2000 and 3000 use. Edit: Mistake #2. Tactics Ogre was, of course, released in the US. The person responsible (me) has been thoroughly punished for this error.

@@dantesquivel0 correct, but many hours go into making these and things can get overlooked or missed because like everyone watching, I am one human being and not infallible. It's important when a mistake happens to acknowledge it, point it out, and accept responsibility for it - which is what this post is for. I'm not like some other people on YT who either dig in, argue, or try to hide any errors. Even worse, there are others who just flat out ignore when they're wrong after someone has proved them wrong and pretend it never happened. I try my best to get everything as accurate as possible, but when maintaining a schedule, minor things WILL rarely slip through the cracks.

A fun fact: PSP running at 272P means that it runs at a higher resolution than the PS2's native 224P/448i That tiny console was pushing some real power back then.
@AlexandruLipan
@AlexandruLipan 21 день назад
PS2 games had resolutions set by the games themselves, as the console lacked a graphic library (graphics were called directly by CPU and set as prebaked instructions to vector and raster processors). Star Wars Battlefront for example was at 512i, GTA San Andreas asked for either 288p or 576i, Crash Bandicoot preferred 384p or 512i, some ports went with 480p.

For 2004 tech, and its wide screen (16:9) and using the Dpad and buttons basically the same size as the PS2/PS3 DualShock (specially from the 2000/3000 models) while Vita's are tiny, being able to play virtually all PS1 library, being able to play current PC/Console games that were multiplatform, such as Tomb Raider Legends/Anniversary, GTA VCS, many exclusives such as Parasite Eve 3. multiplayer games where each player had their own independent screens LOCALLY, which was a much better experience in games like obscured, where the console version shared the same screen. Emulation was BIG on the handheld and the community is great to this day. It was before the 2010's handheld craze that ended up plaguing the online stores, and also had an impact on the Vita, Wii U and the 3DS, the latter only selling well due to Pokémon and a few other Nintendo exclusives that want it or not, still makes Nintendo sell a lot of hardware. I still remember how amazed I was that a handheld had full blown PC/console titles to play portably, it was a first for the handheld market and won't happen again. I mean, the PSP would still be amazing if it only played PS1 games on the go, but it's just a small portion of what it does. It was launched years before the first iPhone and you could watch videos, listen to music and these were really nice features that we now take for granted. The 3000 models even had Skype and we used it!

@@roberto1519 It was super ambitious for 2004 (really 2005) handheld device. Sony had so many right ideas, they just didn't anticipate how big the internet and streaming would become. Once they realized it, it was much too late. The PSP was a complete wrong-direction misstep and they should have saved digital only (with the cart port) for the Vita, that would have worked out better for them. Overall it was a great system and managed to last about 11 years at retail. But, honestly, it became irrelevant faster here than in Japan and some other regions. Still great for its time!
@roberto1519
@roberto1519 Месяц назад
@@InglebardGaming Yes, even the right analog that was an obvious design choice, they screwed it up. It's screen was big for the time and its best looking games were so impressive that those unfamiliar with the system couldn't believe we had portable PS2s at hand. I remember handing the PSP to a guy right after he was talking about arcades and the PSP was running Cadillacs & Dinosaurs (via CPS1PSP) and it blew him away. I'd say that Sony feared iPhone for the wrong reasons, just like SEGA feared the 3DO and the Jaguar, once the iPhone took of (basically from day one), the PSN Store started flooding with mini games that were never the intent of the portable, and this is not only true for mini games as there are countless retail releases inspired by those strange concepts, it ended up with tons of shovelware. Truth be told, I think the iPhone/iPad dominance during the early 10's took the best of the Wii U/Vita, and if these Apple devices had Pokémon available, it would be the same for the 3DS. The market changed in the late 10's, as we can see the likes of the Switch/Steam Deck going strong. Casuals would never care about consoles/portable gaming focused devices, and vice-versa, but it wasn't the case with the early years of the iPhone era.

I've been modding a vita recently and everyday that passes, I lose my shit wondering why Sony messed up the handheld console. I loved the PSP as a kid and love the Vita now as a 33 yo. Sony needs to redo the psp or Vita. That technology was ahead of its time. And that time is now.

The Vita was really good, too, despite a major lack of support in the west. I have a Vita and a PS TV, been a little while since I used, either. I feel like the PS TV could have been HUGE, but Sony probably realized it would cannibalize PS4 sales and they'd essentially be competing with themselves.

When this was announced the buzz around it was huge. I distinctly remember looking forward to it thinking, 'it's gonna have near, Playstation graphics (PS1) on a handheld, amazing!' when they started to show the games in magazines screenshots and with more info coming out, then realising it's not far off a Playstation 2, yes 2! I couldn't believe it. Seeing it running for the first time with it's 16:9 screen amazed gamers. The multimedia capabilities of the machine were also ahead of its time. EDIT: Reminiscing about some of the great, pretty much full console games like Outrun 2 (2006 coast to coast if i remember correctly) playing and looking very close to its console counterparts, and how huge the Monster Hunter games were on the system, which blew up almost like Pokemon at the time especially in Japan. Also a bit later in it's life the homebrew scene was huge with ports like Doom and a great version of Quake along with tons of others and great 'apps' on the different custom firmwares along with loads of emulators bring back memories of some of my favourite gaming moments.

Yeah, when Sony first announced it, everyone expected roughly PS1 quality and it was significantly above that, which was great. It was a couple of notches below PS2 overall, but still crazy powerful for a handheld of that era. The homebrew and hacking scene on the PSP was great, of course, too!

It came to a 'natural' end. Saying piracy 'killed' a system implies that it was abandoned early by the manufacturer. This was not the case with the PSP no matter how mad at me you get. Now did piracy kill the Vita? You might have a good case for that one.

There are some other interesting facts too. The PSP Go supported bluetooth controllers so it could use a Dual Shock 3 when you connected to an external display. Another cool fact is if you're connected to a CRT and you choose 480i as your output resolution you can get a true 240p out of PS1 games. This means that the PSP can show PS1 games identically to how they were displayed on a real PS1. Also some of those PSP titles you mentioned with english patches have since been released in the west with official translations. Final Fantasy Type Zero got a PC/PS4/Xbox One release a few years back. Trails from Zero also got very recent releases too

There were plenty of other things I could have covered, but for these 11 facts videos I pick 11 😁 For games like FF Type 0, yes it was released in updated form on the PS4 (I own it and finished it), but the PSP version is different and was never officially released in english. In fact, it was really controversial when the patch was released, most of the group working on it wanted to drop it when the PS4 english release was announced but someone on the team released it on their own and was really thrashed online for it at the time. In the scheme of things, I'm sure it didn't hurt the ps4 game's sales at all.

That's a good one for the PS1 resolution, let me share another one. The PSVITA, arguably, can do anything the PSP can do via the Adrenaline environment. HOWEVER, one thing the PSP can do that the VITA can't is read the .DAT files that PSP eBOOT games have, which contain the digital manuals.

Back in its heyday, the PSP was revolutionary. But no second analog stick and no way to convert your physical games to digital held it back from aging gracefully. If it did both of those things, plus maybe with PSN trophy and friends list integration, it’d be one of the best handhelds of all time. Despite those things, I still love my 3000. Being able to play games like Star Wars Battlefront, Wipeout, MGS, Assassin’s Creed, Medal of Honor and LEGO games on the go is still cool to me today. Plus the console looks sleek.

I made decent money too, bought a new car and kitted it out with performance mods etc all thanks to those basic accessories, I got greedy and invested it into that stupid screen crap, lost it all hahahah. Kinda disappointed that you didn't mention the hardware NURBS support or acceleration for PNG decoding. Also that the system was severely hindered by not having a second analog stick and having bumpers but not triggers, so it was missing controller parts that prevented a bunch of genres that had already been successful on the PS1/PS2/XBOX/GC from being appropriately playable. It led to some Metal Gear Solid games that couldn't play like the home console ones, even though the hardware was more than up to the task otherwise. I wanted more out of the system, but there were so many amazing titles on the system regardless. The PS1 was a system that a bunch of creative and unique games came to, and the PSP took that mantle since the PS2s development costs were too high to support non-mainstream games. Made it a really nice platform, just not a good place for direct PS1/2 ports in many cases.

I thought about doing one on splines and one on it being the first (sort of) 16:9 system, if I'd done two more they would have been it. Regarding the lack of controls, I thought that one was a bit too common knowledge. All your points are 100% right, the lack of a second stick and extra triggers hampered a fair amount of games. I just felt that's been done extensively by a lot of other videos. The PSP definitely wasn't perfect, but it did a lot of things right and had a pretty solid library overall. Ironic that the Vita fixed a lot of this and performed so much worse (about 15 million sold).

Yep, these are/were our biggest gripes with the handheld. How on earth could Sony NOT add a second analog stick for a 2005 gaming device is beyond comprehension, they remedied that with the Vita, but then they just made the dpad and the face buttons tiny for baby hands... The PSP would be SO much better with at least the right analog thingy, while I could live with the bumpers as they are, at that point in time, games required analog triggers and two analog sticks, go figure.

Considering that gigantic time gap, the vast majority of its games, despite its more modern architecture , look pretty similar quality-wise to PSP games. There are some instances where a few equivalent games look noticeably nicer or run at smoother frame rates on PSP. I know a lot of this is because the 3DS is rendering way more pixels every frame, as I said in the video, but the majority of 3DS games look only barely better than PSP games if they look better at all. There are exceptions of course, there always are, but do you really think most of the games on the 3DS look that much better than most of the games on PSP? Again, not knocking the 3DS, its one of my favorite systems.

@@InglebardGaming It's not about looks, it's about specs. PSP being on par with the 3DS doesn't work because the PSP is on par with PS2 at best, while the 3DS is on par with the much stronger GameCube, and the New 3DS is stronger than the launch 3DS. The Vita is stronger than the 3DS, but the PSP is not. The PSP being stronger would also make the PS Vita specs almost on par with it, and that's most definitely not the case. As for visuals, name anything on PS5 that can't run on PS4 Pro or Xbox One X in the graphics department and I'll show you my pet unicorn.

@BlueEyedVibeChecker To be fair, nost of the stuff that's on PS4 and PS5 looks WAY better on PS5. Playing stuff like Last of Us II or Horizon Zero Dawn upscaled and at a constant 60fps makes them feel like different games on newer hardware.

I would bet piracy did screw up psp. There was one major reason apart from ease of modding and small game sizes. Games on psp were better if you pirated them - longer battery life faster load times. I had plenty of original copies but i prefered their pirated versions. And once you start doing so, it's really easy to just download games that you don't own. This is one of few consoles were i feel like piracy actually hurt the platform, and probably turned off many creators who would otherwise put either more time, money and effort into games that were released, or skipped the platform althogether. I think this might be the reason for psp suprisingly low quality of games (especialy 3d game library suffering from uninspired often showelware titles). Why bother to put money and effort if people will opt for pirated games for so many reasons.
@InglebardGaming
@InglebardGaming Месяц назад
I don't think piracy had zero effect, but I think its exaggerated. I think the system that had it the worst for actual damage was the Dreamcast. Piracy was really rampant on the poor DC since it was so easy to do. But yeah, Sony could have mitigated so much if they just took a better approach. Such as there is ZERO reason that when you buy a physical game you shouldn't be able to download the same game from the online store. That goes for today with the PS5, too. They've been doing that for disc based movies for years. It should be set up so when you put the disc into the system it looks for an individual system ID to tie the game to and then gives you the option to download it with a warning it will only work on that system. If you end up having to replace a system due to damage, they can enable exception to redownload them. Simple, mostly convenient, would deter piracy.

The PSP is among the top 10 selling consoles ever, so yeah SONY made a lot of $$$. They wouldn't have bothered to release a successor to PSP (PS Vita) if piracy did so much harm, as you say. Also, (almost) a decade of official game releases and support is definitely a success story for a non Nintendo handheld.

@rashira9610
@rashira9610 25 дней назад
@@mortenera2294 You're talking a handheld though. They were trying to go for a small form factor, especially since the competition was the OG Nintendo DS. I don;t have a PSP 1000 to compare with but the OG DS is bigger AND thicker than my PSP 3000. Looking at the PSP 1000 tear down, the ribbon cable for the buttons along the bottom (Home, Vol+, Vol-, Start, Select, etc) as well as the power jack are where a second analog could have been placed on the right side of the system. It was all about cramming everything into a small case for portability sake. Now a days we've kind of regressed in the "Make everything tiny" thing, with phones that unfold into tablets and handheld systems with screens only a tad bit bigger than a PSP and only a tad bit smaller than a Vita 1000, but back then the trend was "How much computing power can we cram into something you can easily and comfortably carry in your pocket?" which sometimes meant sacrificing things, such as a second stick. I also don't think Sony really expected many if any games that would have seriously benefitted from a second stick to get made or widely played.

@InglebardGaming
@InglebardGaming Месяц назад
Yes, you can increase the speed in PPSSPP past 333 mhz. I haven't ever gone beyond 333, though and they list CPU speed changes as "unstable." In theory games that skip frames on a real PSP might run smoother at higher clock speeds, but its not a guaranteed thing.

There's no point in a format like UMD anymore. The moving parts are potential points of failure, they consume more power than flash memory and take up a lot of space. It was a cool idea for the time to take things in a different direction. But with the price and efficiency of flash memory these days, there's just no practical reason for them.
