My personal favorite is Chuck Schuldiner. I think he is underrated as a vocalist. I just love the way he delivers his lyrics; most of the time i don't have to look up death lyrics because he sings them in a very decipherable way, despite the nature of death metal vocals being otherwise. And the fact that he has changed his vocal style many times throughout his career and actually going higher as he got older just makes him more bad ass!🤘🏻 RIP🖤 EDIT: And also... he freaking pioneered death metal! he was one of the first if not the first person to do death metal vocals.
Chuck is way up there for me. His vocals are so clear. Also, his style on the guitar is very unique. The riffs are constantly changing, but it's the harmonies that he does. Like Iron Maiden has a signature harmony style, Chuck has his own style.
@Dragon Ball fans can't read yeah i think he did... the thing about possessed is that, it can be considered extreme thrash and death metal at the same time, it's almost like a gray area.
Joe Duplantier doesn't get enough credit for is vocals.Dude's a fking monster .Earlier 4 gojira albums really showed how brutal his pitched screams can be .He sounds great live every night!
great list but mine’s better: 1. Fred Durst 2. Fred Durst 3. Fred Durst 4. Fred Durst 5. Fred Durst 6. Fred Durst 7. Fred Durst 8. Fred Durst 9. Fred Durst 10. Fred Durst 11. Chad Kroeger
This video should be renamed 11 favorite metal vocalists because most of the band's she said were not death metal like Slipknot nor Devin Townsend. Still love Alissa though.
@@TankTheTech I can definitely understand what you guys mean. I usually describe it by drums and such since I’m a drummer and guitarist, so I can definitely understand
My Top 5 IMO.🤘🔥💯 1. Chuck Schuldiner DEATH 2. George Fisher CANNIBAL CORPSE 3. John Tardy OBITUARY 4. Glen Benton DEICIDE 5. David Vincent MORBID ANGEL
IMO Chris Barnes was the better vocalist in Cannibal Corpse, not very impressed with George Fisher. Nowadays Chris Barnes is terrible but did sound amazing until around 10 years ago. Then again I'm quite old too and got into all these bands in the 1980s, my favourites at the time were exactly as your list and I got to see most of them live here in Yorkshire England at Bradford Queens hall, the only place who had death metal gigs close by. Did see Pestilence and Malevolent Creation at a small pub in Sheffield though around the late 80s, early 90s. Other bands I got to see were Napalm Death, Cancer (supporting Deicide, amazing night) Carcass and many others. Can't forget Entombed and Dismember, but never got to see them live, just had to mention them. I also really got into Exhorder and Death Angel, so many great bands at the time.
Not really a purist, but have to say that most vocalists choosen here are not from the genre death metal. So if you want to check out some real death metal bands check Dismember, Obituary, Death, Morbid Angel, Deicide, Necrophobic, Unleashed and so on...
You don't have to be a purist to realise this list is nowhere close to the intended subgenre, you would kinda think she would know better being in a band and touring with alot of different death metal bands. I will give her that Trevor and Joe could be on there, possibly even chuck Billy if your only talking exclusively about 2 albums also Barney and Nergal, but randy blythe and Phil Anselmo? Corey Taylor? Nah
@@nemesis8626: Behemoth is pretty much a black metal band, but I'll admit that Nergal sings better than some death metal vocalists. I just find it funny she's only mentioned singers she's either heard of, worked with/toured with and no one who would qualify as a hidden gem. I understand that guys like the great a Trevor Strnad would always plug lesser known groups/singers to get them exposed to a wider audience, but this list is just all over the place.
Yeah, to leave out John Tardy and David Vincent and Corpsegrinder is just wrong. But lists are kinda wrong, even if we love them and love to hate them haha
this is by far anything but perfect, yet i absolutely agree that this is of course personal preference .. most ppl on this list aren´t even in a death metal band and or are death metal singers (i think the headline for this video is misleading though)
Glad you mentioned Chuck Billy. I've been a Testament fan for a little while now but after seeing them live I really gained a new appreciation for them and they are a metal outlier in my opinion because I believe they've only gotten better over time. They're faster and heavier now than they were in '87 and they can really do no wrong. Chuck's voice is in amazing shape and he can go toe to toe with any other thrash or death metal frontman.
Metal snobs are WAY more cringe. In fact, metal snobs ALMOST steer me away from metal. The “I only listen to suicidal black metal that no one has ever heard” guy. I’m sure you know him.
Great list, and I don't know anyone who can leave Mikael Akerfeldt off a list like this, even if you don't care for Opeth. His range in his prime was just unbelievable, and the dynamics that they'd incorporate? Out of this world. Bless that man.
Great list? So it's great when people are asked the greatest singers of a genre, and then list a lot of singers that don't sing that genre like slipknot?
My favorite will always be Phil Bozeman. What he brought to the table of deathcore and deathmetal is insane and his gutturals are so clean, agressive and emotional, no one sounds like him. Love him so much!
1- Scott Reigel 2- Karl Willetts 3- Jan Chris de Koeijar 4- L.G Petrov 5 - Martin van Drunen 6- Karyn crisis 7- Dave Gregor 8- Corpsegrinder 9- John Tardy 10- Johan Hegg 11- Chuck....Chuck is probably in my top 5 actually!
Mikael is the greatest of all time. That growl sounds so natural, like a real beast. The voice itself is so amazing and beautiful. There's Mikael and others. The end. Other sounds like they are tearing the shit out of themselves. I would've put Johan Hegg on the list. His voice until With Oden on Our Side was so good, so unique.
Ok the real list in Death Metal Lenzig Leal - Cephalic Carnage Muhammed Suiçmez - Necrophagist Frank Mullen - Suffocation John Tardy - Obituary Chuck Schuldiner - Death Ben Falgoust - Soilent Green Mikael Åkerfeldt - Bloodbath George CG Fisher - Cannibal Corpse Sherwood Webber IV - Skinless Jason Blachowicz - Divine Empire Jeff Walker - Carcass There are many others but those stand out to me. I know there are some crazy tech metal vocalist out there currently but I wouldn't really consider that death metal per say
Thanks you! This video should be titled just metal vocals in general cause it had one death metal band. Only thing is would you consider Soilent Green DM? i can hear the influences for sure but imo theyre more of hardcore sludge band
@@headshot217 Yeah Soilent Green is definitely on the fence. Sewn Mouth Secrets was definitely not death metal back when they had the cartoon guitarist but the newer release step into the realm of death metal
@@headshot217 I probably should have used Goatwhore. The first album was very black metal but they started to get a little more death metal kind of maybe sort of
Crazy how underrated swallow the sun is bc the singer mikko kotamäki is probably one of the all around best metal singers. Screams, growls, clean vocals. Dude is insane.
Peter Tagtren is always left out when it comes to death metal vocalist. He has the widest range of any singer I have ever heard and his growls are the most guttural I've ever heard. This list has some great singers but as far as death metal, Peter is hands down the best.
Honestly I don't see how anybody could leave off John tardy of the mighty OBITUARY he's been doing it since the mid 80s and his voice is so distinct and has been copied and copied and copied. 🤘 Horns up for Florida DEATH Metal..we invented this shit.
Randy Blythe is #1 for me that guy is just insane and his voice is so distinct you can always tell it's him. I feel like Lamb of God cannot ever put out a bad song, they are all awesome!
11 actual 'Death Metal' vocalists Joe from Broken Hope Luc from Gorguts Brett from Malevolent Creation Chris from Cannibal Corpse John from Obituary Glen from Deicide Will from Mortician Frank from Suffocation George from Cannibal Corpse Oli from Archspire Phlegeton from Wormed
I'll only do a top 3. The greatest growl I've ever heard is by Paul Kuhr of Novembers Doom - a veteran band that unfortunately far too few people know. His low tone and volume are amazing and he has the clearest enunciation of any Death metal vocalist I've ever heard. Second and third place, frequently shifting around depending on my mood, are taken by Opeth's Mikael Akerfeldt and Amorphis' Tomi Joutsen.
Should have title the video “favorite metal vocalists” to be fair. She clearly doesn’t even know 11 death metal vocalists, or she would have stuck to the premise.
I agree. It's obvious that she's well versed with the general singers in the metal community, mentioning a wide array of groups/singers, but it just seems that she doesn't know enough death metal singers to make a list. That said, it almost seems like she onlymentions groups/singers she's familiar with....
I can agree on all of them, but u missed Will Ramos from Lorna Shore. I mean he isn’t singing death metal, but man, he is insane! He has the most brutal gutteral I’ve ever herd, amazing highs and pig squeals, and still could be an good pop singer with his clear voice lmfao… I mean, listen to a few Lorna shores and after this listen to will‘s cover of sleep token. This is insane
I don't think there's a single short clip you can play of Opeth's music that will do Mikael's voice justice. The demonic power he gives off is stunning. And his clean voice is amazing too, as Alissa said.
Spot on with Chuck Billy. He had an iconic 80s thrash voice but was shocked to hear him morph into having one of the most powerful death metal vocal tones. He sounds so full and makes it seem effortless
A vocalist I absolutely love is Seiki Kakuzaki from Intestine Baalism, his voice is suuuuper deep and also very booming, it is one of the most animalistic sounds I’ve heard and it establishes a presence in their music
Ok first off this list……not bad. Some great choices but they’re not all Death Metal vocalists. So my top 11 DEATH metal vocalists are (In no particular order): 1. Barney- Napalm Death 2. Jeff Walker- carcass 3. Ola Lindgren/Jörgen Sandström- Grave 4. Tomas Lindberg- At The Gates 5. Mikael Åkerfeldt- Bloodbath 6. David Vincent- Morbid Angel 7. Phil Bozeman- Whitechapel 8. Bjorn Strid- Soilwork 9. Marco Aro- The Haunted 10. Dallas Toler Wade - Nile 11. Frank Mullen- Suffocation I know there are a ton more but those are my top 11
as i am scroling through the comments ... the lack of travis ryan is disturbing !! how in the frozen hell can he not be in everybodys top5 is beyond be tbh there is no one near him atm in that genre
She mentioned the ten vocalist I also admire too and yet there are bunch of other metal vocalists that are superb. I like when she said Nergal " The Nerg" , she made it sound awesome. That's a great hook of a nickname.
For me Peter Tägtgren from hypocrisy is the best melodic death metal vocalist, and then David Vincent ex morbid angel’s vocalist, and number 3 George fisher from cannibal corpse.
what do you expect from a list of " the greatest deathmetal vocalists " that starts with a woman . i have no problem with woman doing extreme vocals , it's just that men are on a different level , the way men perform the lows and highs is something i never yet got to see a woman does .
Yeah thats what i thought considering the title says “Death Metal”, but apparently…..its more Metal…..which i’m fine with, cuz i like it all…..just misleading.
Devin is just a master of all. Chuck Schuldiner, for obvious reasons of greatness and Jeff Walker from Carcass. Instantly recognisable and his voice is just fun to listen to.
My favorites are Alexi Laiho from Children of Bodom because I love his voice and how it fits with the music they're playing and Chris Barnes from Cannibal Corpse and Six Feet Under because I can't stop listening to his extremely low, brutal guttaral vocal style
@@docphantom2224: There was an article I read about how Black Dahlia Murder was going to continue touring and making music after losing Trevor Strnad as their frontman. Interesting news and it would have been a great article if they never mentioned other bands who weren't able to continue after losing their frontman. Why, I hear you ask? Because they went out of their way to mention modern bands, who aren't even famous, who decided to quit after losing their frontman but they don't even mention Bodom After Midnight...
Alexi's voice was on fire back in 99! As a Bodom fan you HAVE TO listen to the "Tokyo Warhearts" live album! He never came close to his voice afterwards
in no particular order 11.alissa white-gluz-phil anselmo-rob halford- chuck shuldiner-fabio lione 10.corpesgrinder 9.mikael akerfelt 8.kyo 7.petri lindroos 6.jari maenpaa 5.angela gossow 4.chrileon 3.will ramos 2.chuck billy 1.ronnie james dio
David Vincent, Corpsegrinder, Chuck, Tardy, Benton, LG Petrov, Tomas Lindberg, Björn Strid, Bret Hoffmann and many others. The only woman that I would put in a 'best death metal vocalists' list is Simone Pluijmers
jesus fuck you kids bore me. Godflesh would be number one, Dead World, Skrew (members of Nin and Zombie), and Crawl. THAT is industrial metal, not some goth shit.
my personal favourites are phil anselmo and max cavalera, i started growling/screaming with slaugthered from pantera, i mastered it from scratch on a month
@@AgentBeans Dude, she's the vocalist for Arch Enemy... That says it all. Sure, Phil has done some death metal/black metal (not particularly well either) but still... Look at the majority of her picks. Not only are most of them NOT death metal, they are all also VERY mainstream metal bands... Super vanilla and uninteresting for the most part. Again, Arch Enemy...
Max Cavalera, John Tardy, Chuck Schuldiner, L.G. Petrov, Jeff Walker, David Vincent, Johnny Hellund, Burton C. Bell, Marc Grewe, Barney Greenway, Dave Ingram, Karl from Bolt Thrower
as i am scroling through the comments ... the lack of travis ryan is disturbing !! how in the frozen hell can he not be in everybodys top5 is beyond be tbh there is no one near him atm in that genre
My top 5 death metal vocalists would be as follows: 5: Joe Duplantier (Gojira) 4. George Fisher (Cannibal Corpse) 3. Chuck Schuldiner (Death) 2. Alexi Laiho (Children of Bodom) 1. Mikael Akerfeldt (Opeth)
