I like the cool rock in pan idea. My girls get an ice block each afternoon in the summer. They take turns standing on it to cool off. I use an old tupperware that's about 12x5x3 inches. They love it!
Good tips! Our local dollar tree has plastic cat litter boxes for $1.25. They're about the same size as those disposable aluminum roasting pans and would likely last a little longer.
Great tips, as it is already in the 90’s in Kentucky I am using your tips. Just bought an old cooler today. Can I put a box fan in my coop to keep my chickens cool?
You can use a fan in your coop, but there are a few things to keep in mind. The fan should not be positioned in such a way that it is blowing directly on your chickens. Using a fan in the coop can blow harmful dust and particulates onto your chickens, so it is important it is not blowing air directly on them. If you use a fan in your coop, if possible, acquire one meant for outdoor or livestock use as a regular box fan will last for a while but will eventually fail due to the dust that will accumulate inside it. Any fan will need to be removed and cleaned regularly. If you are using a fan in the coop, it can be secured to the ceiling or placed high near a vent and facing outward so it is evacuating hot air and dust and blowing it away from your chickens, not toward them. Again, I want to stress it is important it is not blowing directly on your chickens and that if you’re using one at ground level in any of their areas it is placed in such a way they can escape it and only use it when they wish to. Options are always good. Be mindful of the placement of any electrical chords around animals because they can be a trip hazard and some chickens may peck the chord itself so they will need to be inspected regularly and used in a safe and conscious manner.
