While there were more engines I didn't know about than usual, I was thrilled to see rare video of some engines that I've known about for decades. The Commer Knocker, the Chrysler Multibank, The Taunus V4 (reason why I've wanted a Sonett III since age 15), and the Buick 8 are all engines I've admired since childhood. Thanks for keeping me dreaming.

+Eduardo Cavalli Oh yes! I saw one of those running at my local racing track here in Brazil at the AIC... it's gorgeous! I wish I could put my hands in one of those car with these 3 cylinders 2-stroke 1 liter engines to try to put a proper ECU controlling the injection and spark advance. I'm not really sure how the wideband oxygen sensor would react to the extra oil on the exhaust gases (due the oil mixed up with the fuel), but to finely tune the engine during first runs before setting the ECU to work on open loop... I believe it would be just fine. :D I already got plenty of fun with my 1 liter Zetec Rocam supercharged (114.8 hp @ 7000 RPM running with 158kPa manifold pressure, higher spark advance and ethanol)... I would like to more stuff, but unfortunately I will to sell it... :/

Glad to see the Barra I6 getting some recognition internationally! We've had it for so long, and I've owned many Falcon's with this motor and they're the most reliable, toughest and best sounding 6 cylinders I've ever seen. The turbos are also absolutely insane :P

I had one, bog stock, made 250kw atw and 550nm, 0-100 in 4.9sec and 13sec 1/4 mile. Still took me on long highway runs, used very little fuel for the size and power and was super reliable.

Thanks for this. The Suzuki 750 "waterbottle" or "kettle" as they were affectionately known. Super smooth with a heap of bottom end grunt in standard trim. A wonderful touring bike in their day and the close tolerances allowed by more efficient cooling meant they were pretty bulletproof and reasonably economical on fuel. The 3 cylinder configuration was also used in air cooled form in the Suzuki 380 and 550 road bikes. A similar watercooled 550 cc engine was also used in the very early Suzuki off road 4WD L50's I think they were called. They all made that characteristic 2 stroke ring ding ring when off the throttle. Any 3 cylinder piston engine sounds good though I reckon.

The Ford Barra I6 is actually detuned so it doesn't outperform the V8s. Apparently it can make 300kw (just over 400hp) with just a tune. I've also seen videos of stock Barras with simple bolt on turbos making 600+hp. It's a bloody ripper of an engine.

Yes, 300kw is about the safe power for a tuned stock engine with an intercooler etc. After that they can and do explode without better rods and pistons. And head gaskets! And the car that particular engine was in was not factory with that engine.

My father would her been interested in seeing this clip of the Chrysler multibank. It would have brought back memories of when he was Sherman commander in the New Zealand Division in Italy, 1944-45. He said the New Zealand Division's first Shermans, when they were still in North Africa, came with GM 2-stroke diesels. They liked the engine and the fact that diesel fuel was harder to set alight than petrol. After they went to Italy, they started getting their tanks with this Chrysler motor. The reason was that the Americans were building thousands of landing craft for the Pacific war and needed all the GMs they could get. The Chrysler power plant was not universally popular among the tank crews and they sometimes had a hell of a job keeping the five motors synchronised. Another downside was the petrol-powered tanks caught fire very easily when hit and they lost a lot of people because of that.

Suzuki made three 3-cyl two-strokes; a 380cc, a 550 cc and the 750cc shown here. The latter was water-cooled, and was sometimes called the Water Buffalo. I owned a 380 for a while; smoothest bike I ever rode. This engine configuration gives 6 power strokes per rovolution, which is partly why they are so smooth. There is slight rocking imbalance with a three cylinder but not too strong which is why they are smooth.

Interesting thing-the Sherman tank used 4 drastically different engines during WWII. The most popular was a 7 cylinder air cooled radial gasoline engine with cooling fan. Then a Ford 1,000cu/in V-8, Chrysler's 5-6cyliner engine, and General Motors 2 6-71 Diesels mated together with a single transmission. This could be done since the engine was in the rear and the transmission was in the front.

I was kind of hoping to see the Napier Deltic engine and the Kawasaki h2 triple two stroke..........but you gave me the TS3 knocker the gt750 and a thunderball eight im well chuffed! thanks

That Commer Knocker 3 cylinder diesel is whats called an opposed piston engine, the pistons are set as pairs inside a single cylinder with the tops of the pistons facing, the combustion space is between them. In this engine the movement of a pair is transmitted via rocker arms to a single cranckshaft, other designs use 2 cranckshafts coupled together with gears. Because these engines don't have heads they work thermal more efficient but they only can be built as two strokes as it is difficult to fit valves in the cylinder wall, a slight out of sync movement of a pair of pistons does time the opening and closing of intake and exhaust ports. Some other whopping OP engines to include in the next video are the Napier Deltic and Kharkov 10D100 engines. And have you had the Napier W12 aero engine that powered some landspeed record cars in the 1920's like the Sunbeam Napier, saw this car doing speedruns live and it really was outrageous. And like Marios Pantouvanos said you should have included a shot of a Scania V8 truck with open exhaust, these things sound really good.

The Honda bike is super tiny, like the motor can flex the whole thing haha

the rc211v v5 is a magnificent piece of engineering, i read an article somewhere about the design process and decision where honda worked out a v6 was too complex, an inline or v4 was boring, a v3 or v5 would be good but the v5 was better because the middle front cylinder reduced first order vibration and eliminated the need for a secondary balancer so the engine itself could be made lighter but also produced its own power, overall around 220-250hp. It was a monster to control and while most crews tried to eek more power out of their engines honda tried to reign their horses in so to speak and make it more manageable, this was done by development of the inverted link rear suspension and later more refined traction control which allowed the rider to control the rear 2 butterflys with the ecu controlling the front 3. The 75.5 degree angle meant the intake had a very straight shot down from the airbox down to the intake valves, the engine layout was changed later on moving the crank up and gearbox underneith to centralise the bike weight. slipper pistons are basic racing engine tech but if you look at a teardown of it the machining is just amazing, V.Rossi wanted big fairing on the bike like his old one because it reduced wind blast at speed, they tried it and it handled like a pig so they put the tiny minimalist fairing on which made it a monster engine with the smallest amount of aero parts and a mental rider perched on top, they won something like 15/16 races during its usage.

Wow, somebody has some knowledge about it. And it definitely sounds magnificent as well. Thank you for your comment.

Perhaps no one else commented about Chrysler Multibank because it is long forgotten. Personally I came across it but never search about it (I did just before). Very interesting engine, Chrysler engineers were really good.

Bugatti and Duesenberg are better known for inline 8s than anyone. They were popular designs for early race cars as well as airplanes and some luxury cars because of their smooth operation.

Seems like almost all of those duesenbergs were inline 8s. What about Cord, did they make one?
