get a pile of battery's the thing is a hog. I ran my 11 , my 7 black and my 7 silver a lot , the fastest one to go dead is the 11 (if it dont overheat first) running them off a USB cord fixes both of these problems

I disagree on the 1st point. I've found myself cursing my unwillingness to record more after missing something I would have wanted recorded. Editing a couple more minutes is not that hard, specially if you're willing to watch the video at 3x speed or more. I do absolutely agree on every single other pont, though

I am new user of GoPro and I am yet to use it the first time. Coincidently, youtube suggested this video to me. Totally agree with using the chesty over a head mount. I capture a lot of fishing shots and you don’t realise just how much you move your head until you watch a playback

Good points , the last is probably the best get out and use it and use it a lot . I find a mono pod is good also for different angles and fake drone video and it keeps it level .

Your tutorials have already improved my footage quality by a lot and I've used different settings for different situations. I'm so grateful for it! However I'm curious if you have an idea, how to tackle mistake #1 better. It feels like i record for a long period of time and nothing happens. As soon as I turn the camera off, so much interesting stuff goes on. What could be a solution for that?

They have a knew feature called hindsight which records all the time and when you start recording, it saves the 15 to 30 seconds prior to that moment, so you never get caught off guard

Helmet mounts are definitely superior for skiing, you just need to get the position and angle right. Also the max lens mod is great for skiing as well

Great tips, thanks. However, not everyone owns or can afford to purchase a good spec laptop that is capable of running Davinci Resolve, etc. Thus, they have no alternative option but to use a tablet or smartphone for editing. Even though I've only recently purchased a GoPro, I'm not certain that I'd purchase another one. For those of us that have problems with our fingers, e.g. the on/off switch is difficult to press, and opening the battery compartment is a real struggle. GoPro designers don't seem to think about people with disabilities.

The biggest problem I had as a beginner was saving the video. The go pro subscription helps out a lot with that. But he's right, you need a computer. I need to upgrade.

What about the stupid design in Gopro that swithes from vidéo mode to photo mode when you don't know it ? Gopro won't add à means to lock in vidéo mode apparently. For me : no more Gopro caméra until it's fixed.

Regarding the 1st point, I started doing it that way, trying to time it and make a good clip, but I would often miss things or not press record at all. Now I just record gigantic videos, then I edit them. It's not hard finding the interesting moments exactly because they are few, so you will usually remember where to look for.

Good advice, but there wasn't a single mention of how to extend the battery life! My first time using my gopro was cut short by the battery dying. Would've been life-saving to know about how to extend the battery life back then!

My first & only mistake: buying Hero 12 & Max together & now I cant use both together. Gopro App can only support one camera at a time. Not worried about next 10 mistakes as I will be returning BOTH.I will be buying DJI & INSTA haha

Good stuff. I am still making some of these mistakes. The longer clips for instance, I forgot to hit the off button riding home from the airshow Saturday. I found one clip of me riding home, handlebar mounted so bleh.. not exciting at all. Thanks for this one and I will check out more of your tutorials

Very informative. It puzzles me that EVERYBODY talks about, the necessity of ND filters and the 180 shutter-rule. Can’t you get as good as a motion blur in post (like Davinci Studio)? One would be more flexible and wouldn’t have the hassle with the NDs all the time. Hardly anybody talks about the negatives/restrictions of using an ND filter like, color-casting, vignetting, having to use a higher ISO sometimes, not being able to use polarizers with a variable ND filter which is usually less of a quality anyway, bad stabilizing results, etc. If the motion blur is only done in post, without NDs, how good and easy is the result of a proper motion blur and quality?

I use a Sony Handy cam for most filming mainly use the go pro for under water and boating shots .I started with Bolex 8mm back in the 19 60s .editing is the hardest part .I doubt that I'll ever get all my movies edited .

Buying one. If they made one that used super capacitors that you could plug into an external power source it would be able to handle harsh weather conditions and the battery would last much longer but they seem quite content letting their devices overheat while charging which makes them useless. This includes their dash cams. They are complete garbage.

Biggest GoPro mistake for me (so far) buying the wrong size SD card. A quick Google search said a 32gb SD card could hold approx 3.5hrs video, so I bought one. Only to find out it will only hold 57mins of video.

Thank you for offering this video. You made a statement that has totally changed my mind about buying a GoPro which I have been researching. I have been making instructional videos for RU-vid. I am using my laptop but want to buy a portable camera so I have more flexibility in camera positioning and adding movement to my shots. Your remark that GoPro is not good for closeups and portraits has saved me from making a big mistake! Thank you. I have little experience and have no one to teach me how to use the equipment I own, so I am totally on my own in learning how to use any new equipment. Any suggestions for a good camera that will be simple for me to learn how to use would be greatly appreciated. By the way, I'm 80 years old and not technically savey. BTW, I'm guessing you were not using GoPro to shoot your on-camera speaking segments.

yeah when the sun starts to go down so does the look of the footage lol. I use my marauder mini torch and I love it it's the best thing to me I praise it. I also find it annoying that GoPro Quick app for desktop doesn't fully work and never will which I find stupid as they focused on just for mobile devices. I transfer from GoPro to my iPhone quick app then upload to the cloud and then I air drop from GoPro to my Mac or sometimes I'll usb GoPro to Mac and drag and drop. do u know if I loose quality or anything doing these ways?

Thanks for the basics, Werner! I'm buying a GoPro #9 in a few weeks to shoot from a kayak - whitewater footage plus flat water paddling, fishing and camping footage, meal preps, and gear reviews in the backcountry. I plan to mount the camera on a short tripod in the center of my kayak so that I can pivot it for vlogging. Can you suggest a self-contained microphone system for voice that can also pick up woodland sounds (birds and animals beyond a few feet.) Unfortunately, the GoPro plugin for an extra mic requires the waterproof battery door to stay open, completely negating the waterproof features. I'm hoping to find something running off a battery pack that does not connect to the camera. I've bought NCH VideoPad editing software and hope to start working with it soon. Any advice would be appreciated! I'll be taking still shots with my T3i Canon. Thanks in advance...Eric

Hi Eric, I have little experience with outdoor microphones. Sometimes I use a Rode lavalier microphone and use it on a recording device. Maybe a recording device like the Tascam DR 05 or the Zoom H1 would be suitable for you. They record autonomously, but you can also connect microphones.
