Clients! You need clients.

Toys! The word is “toys” for all the 11 items you mentioned, or “gadgets” if you want. But, I must admit, I like toys too, and I have most of the things you mentioned. Lol I am not sure I would ever show my clients photos directly after shooting, especially on an iPad, where you (client) can magnify on all the “flaws” you think you have. But I mostly shoot Boudoir, and there is some retouching to do even on models. On the other hand, a V-flat is something I need to buy soon. Thank you for the handy list!

I did have the problem recently with some middle aged office workers judging their 5700px image and not realizing no one would see it bigger than a phone screen, at best.

@@JohnGress exactly! Us (meaning me) middle aged women look for those wrinkles! lol But yes, that's my problem with showing them on an iPad: in Boudoir a lot of women feel exposed and over conscious: they get twinkles in their eyes when I show the back of my camera, but not when I tether on my 27" screen. They are often stuck with hiding their "problem areas" way more than they should, and I have to do a lot of explaining to convince them that even on a 16x20 print you'll not see it. I don't like to talk and I really like that twinkle, so no tethering for me. :)

I REALLY enjoy your videos & look forward to diving deeper in your classes in the future. One criticism - and it may seem like a small thing but it can affect your message - is how often you get caught up trying to equate standard vs metric measuring. It really disrupts the flow of your message/video. I noticed in other videos, but in this video specifically you really went sideways for a bit figuring it out, and by the time you did, I had to remind myself what the actual point was that you had been focused on before the mathematical translation tangent. I suggest choosing one or the other to be your measurement system of choice, then let your audience figure out what 2.7 meters is in feet (as an example). If they’re interested, they’ll do the math. Again, love your videos, your content, and your presentation, and I wouldn’t offer this critique if I didn’t care. I hope it’s taken with that in mind. :) Thank you for all the work you put into these, and for your passion for studio photography!

Thank you so much! I think I have memorized all of the measurements by now and deliver things smoother, or I just put it on screen rather than struggle, all in an effort to serve a broader audience.

Its not necessary. I shoot fashion photography and I do it with one camera and one lens. A D700 and a 50mm f1.8. Every shot is a full length body shot. I shoot on location and also in a studio. For that I hire everything and pay an assistant on an hourly rate when needed. I have presets in Lightroom and sometimes use Luminar Neo. I can get my shots to my client that night and I make over $150k pa. The worst thing you can do is buy everything. No real pro does that. They have a core couple of cameras, rent lenses and everything else. The D700 suits my agency file size limit of 24mp, but I have never needed to upsize. The only other camera I would consider is Canon 6D, but that doesn't give me anything more.

I have a small space in my home I use for shooting. It works well, and several of these will help me enhance my space. The entire thing tears down and can be stored. I do wonder about adding a weight bench that adjusts to my equipment. I think it would provide some different posing angles while seated and and would fold up easy for storage not in use. What do you think? I value your opinion.

Great tips John, please my question is, can V-flat be customized with plywood and black & white stain and gives the same quality as the V-flat world?
@JohnGress
@JohnGress 3 года назад
Thanks Sam! I haven't heard of anyone doing that, I think because it would be too heavy, but in theory it should work.
@roryonabike5863
@roryonabike5863 3 года назад
There are several videos on RU-vid that show how to make these from beadboard, which is the same material that V-Flat World uses. As far as I can tell, you can make the same thing in an hour or two for a lot less money.

My pet peeves are gaffers tape and cable ties.... I use them for just about anything.... From my personal experience I despise the tethering tools products, they tend to give you a false sense of security and be less careful, I damaged a camera tethering port as a result, I was using the whatever jerk thing is called, ( the plate is better even if more than 10 times overpriced, at least it works, I instead use an L bracket and the cable is fixed to it with cable ties) in the same way I am too scared to use the laptop table/support on a stand, too easy to be knocked down, for this I am using a cheap bed side cabinet on wheels, the tethering cable is tied on a corner next to the wheel, and at the top of the cabinet I have raised the edges so the laptop sits like inside it. I know that I can be really clumsy so I have had to take extra precautions
@JohnGress
@JohnGress 3 года назад
I forgot the gaffer tape! The mini c-stand is a great platform for tethering but since I pair it with a close by tripod I don’t really have to worry about over stretching my cable. I didn’t use to use a tripod but now I’m all for it.
@nilofido411
@nilofido411 3 года назад
@@JohnGress I use two 5 meters cables, one of which has a powered connection that draws electricity from the laptop to burst the signal, I love the freedom of using the camera hand held, but I get the what you mean by using a tripod, in certain situations I also find it very practical.
@JohnGress
@JohnGress 3 года назад
Now that I am using the tripod I can't yank the camera off the table by tripping over the cable.

How delicate are the V-Flats and how long do they last?
@jamesjonesphotography
@jamesjonesphotography 3 года назад
They can be delicate. I got mine from adorama they shipped it to me ups in the manufacturers box. It arrived damaged in the corners with some dent on the flats and one hole in the white. I still have it because they said the damaged couldn't be seen in a photo. I use this one for all my on location shoots and if the spots show up I just Photoshop them out.
