Today the guys at Little Wars TV begin Part 1 of a massive Napoleonic wargame campaign, covering the Spring of 1813 in central Germany. Starting in late April 1813, players maneuver armies across a custom theater map and battle for the survival of Napoleon's empire. Before the game, we sit down with historian Dr. George Nafziger to understand how the events of 1812 shaped the stakes for 1813. To play the game, we're using Hollandspiele's "Campaign of Nations" hex and counter boardgame and combining that with the classic 1990s "Volley & Bayonet" rules for miniature battles.

Great! Do you want to be the elves or the orks? But seriously, I've not played any age of sail games except for once at a convention. It was a multiplayer game (we had 6 or maybe 7 iirc) called Bloody Broadsides and I bloody loved it. Check it out if you get the chance. I think it could easily be played solo, but I still have a few hundred figures to paint (for other games) taking up my table space.@@catdenvonwein2723

David as Eugene is honestly so entertaining. Also, Chal is a perfect choice for the extremely aggressive Blucher. Miles’ decision to not reenforce Tom in the second half was definitely a missed opportunity. Miles outnumbered Chal in the extreme later on, and Tom, poor Tom, pretty much sat on his hands because of his lack of forces.

This was a fantastic start to this campaign. I love the "Fog of War" aspect of campaigns and listening/watching the different commanders discuss strategy, trying to figure what the other side have planned. Creating a 3d version of the map and using flags to represent the forces adds to the immersion. Using the Volley and Bayonet ruleset takes me back to my childhood, watching my dad and his friends from our wargaming club play Napoleonic and ACW battles. I'm very much a French player for the Napoleonic era and the lack of cavalry and reliable scouting reports make this period really challenging for the French which I think adds to the enjoyment of campaigns like this. Great job guys, and Merry Christmas from Australia. One of my favourite Napoleonic battles is the Battle of Rivoli. :)
@georg3489

The battle of Großbeeren is the my favourite, because Yorck is the most hilarious general of the napoleonic wars. The man sent a letter to his king formally informing him of his high treason in defecting to the Russians near the end of 1812. The battle itself also demonstrates that without their emperor, most of Napoleons Marshals really weren't that good as independent commanders.

Mine is Lützen. Napoleon initially being caught on the back foot on the site of Gustavus Adolphus' death, but inspiring his young conscripts to hold against overwhelming odds. Then, Napoleon's counterattack and victory; testament to the same adaptability he showed at Eckmühl. An indecisive (if only Napoleon had Cossaks...) victory won at at a high price, showing the emperor in all his personal glory, but offering a grim look into the future of the 1813 campaign.

What a fun winter treat! Modifying the hex and chit rules to include a miniature battle resolution system is genius and I'm really liking how it looks to play out! Especially as a longtime hex and chit fan, it's something I love to see played out! Brilliant moves from the french side after the Magdeburg debacle, great job rallying and recovering from mistakes. My personal favorite battle is Jena-Auerstedt! Brilliant tactical work from the french. But my favorite of the German 1813 campaign is the battle of Dresden from the autumn!
@warlordofbritannia
@warlordofbritannia 6 месяцев назад
The opening explanation is brilliant; the sole criticism I’d offer is that Napoleon was a master of logistics *when he chose to be.* His failures (at least up until 1813) were always due to him underestimating the importance of logistics-rather ironic for the man who pointed out “an army marches on its stomach” 😂

Great video, love the fact that you are making this campaign in the one hour format. Highly looking forward to the next part! My favourite battle of this time period would probably be Jena-Auerstedt or Wagram, but if I have to chose I would pick the first one. It greatly highlighted the strenghts of the french corps' system and logistical advantages. But it also showed that the French army (despite this time being called Napoleonic wars) was not always about Napoleon - often the fate of battles was decided by individual decisions of his marshalls or other subordinates and Jena-Auerstedt is a perfect example of that.
