Move it closer to the water. The closer the light, the higher the PAR, the higher the PAR, the more photosynthesis takes place, the more photosynthesis that takes place, the higher the pH and more glucose is released into the water which overall helps your corals. More PAR is better. I'm pretty sure you can burn macro algae but I haven't been successful yet. The more light I give, the quicker it grows. Can't burn the stuff. Dragon's Breathe is the best one yet! I feel like it grows faster, is cleaner and does a better job than cheatomorpha and sea grapes. That said I'm sure you certainly can give it more light than the plant can use so you'll end up just wasting power and energy.
Interesting and happy to see you guys getting back to testing! This is the reason I watch your show. I have a question regarding your test and that is how, if any, impact does flow have on Cheto ability to utilize higher PPFD? It ties into your questions about PPFD, spectrum and so on.......
That's a good question and not one that we necessarily know the answer to. Given that chaeto will typically float to the surface, it's likely that flow won't have a significant impact.
@@BRStv ok, The reason for my question was twofold 1) Triton has a 10x recomendation and 2)when running a algae reactor some people have issues with slime forming and the question is if that might be a lack of flow issue?!
Try putting the refugium lights closer and retest. Most people don't have refugiums that big to start and most people run the lights 3-7 inches above the water. I feel like the average refugium is somewhere around 7 by 9 inches.
Yeah, I have a Red Sea Reefer 250 sump and the water level is like 1/3 of what’s shown here. Most people won’t need to spend hundreds of dollars on these crazy lights because they don’t need to penetrate that much water.
You may want to change the title of this to say “Measured” or “Analyzed” instead of “Tested”. By the title and thumbnail, it looks like this video was about actually testing on chaeto when you only did PAR measurements and analysis.
I'm going to be using an on-hand Full spectrum 11 watt LED. 100 Par 6" under the surface which is MORE than plenty. The price for a refugium light isn't something to blow your budget on. Home Depot CF bulbs were plenty back in the day.
I have 2 $11 Amazon panel grow led’s I set on the side of my refugium. They grow chaeto faster than any of these. (One works fine but had room for two).
@@alsfishbarn1589 side by side? No. But Currently have the Tunze 10000k on my RedSea Reefer and before the Amazon lights I had the Kessil H380 and an AI Fresh water (not at the same time) on my big tank. The Amazon light out performs all of them. The Tunze works well. Growth is slower but it’s on a different tank. The AI had more light spill in my sump than I liked but performed okay. The Kessil just burnt through the chaeto, even on the lowest setting. With the Amazon light I pull out nearly a grocery bag once a month. I’m not knocking any of these lights. Just sharing my experience of wasting money on a light that only grows algae.
@@jheezie I am with you! I find it mad companies are pushing using AI Prime Fuge and Freshwater, Kessils and Radions considering the cost of these products, when people have beautiful planted freshwater tanks with basic lights and an even cheaper grow light could grow cheato no problem.👌
Very soon. Results for the final test came back a few weeks ago. Now we have to get the data together and film/edit the video. We want to do this one right. We know there are a lot of reefers eager to see the results.
@@BRStv thanks for the response! looking forward to the results. I actually bought Aquaforest Life Source, Caribsea Ocean Direct sand, and KP aquatics ocean rock to seed my new tank thanks to these tests.
I’d love to know how I can grow chaeto in my innovative marine 20gal AIO I’ve been trying to grow it in one of the back chambers with a chaeto max light but the chaeto either dies off or I end up growing other algae back there that outcompetes the chaeto.
Check to make sure that you have nutrients in your tank, like nitrates and phosphates, in order for the macro algae to grow. If you really wanted to dig into it, you could also consider sending in an ICP test to see if there is a deficiency in certain trace elements that could also be leading to the issue.
I use a $20 planted tank light from Amazon. It does the job fine for the refugium of my 40 gallon tank, which is great because I’ve got a mortgage to pay😆
Lol same. I'm using four 25$ Amazon lights. The people who manufacturer aquarium equipment and the people that run the industry have lost touch with their customer basis. They forget we're out here with a mortgage supporting a family. This is one of those hobbies where once you get in you'll never make your money back and the only way to get out is to give your stuff away.
Tunze 10k is one on its own, it can gain extra par and grow your cheato quicker than some of the others as you can submerge it fully and not lose light or par like the others, this is also great for not spilling light too mich and growing unwanted algae in skimmer or other areas of sump also its the only one that is totally safe and un unaffected in such a warm damp area such as a sump, its limited in tech and timers like most of the others, but its cheapest par even with wifi smart plug timer, and you look cool saying siri/alexa/google fuge light on/off !!
Agree 100% I use the Tunze Echo Chic fuge light on a couple sumps. Chaeto grows healthy. When submerged you don't waste par. Doesn't use up much electricity and is a great bang for the buck.
"New tank syndrome" tends to mean different things to different reefers. If you're using natural sea water, you'll still have to go through the normal cycling process as far as the nitrification process goes.
One should keep in mind that red algae do not absorb red light, and that green algae do not absorb green light. A white light lamp will work with most types of algae🤡
