Managed to get through a bunch of games in the final part of 2023! The cold unfortunately still lingers, and it got to the point that I had to split the recording in to two when I managed to recover a bit. So if I sound a bit down for the first couple of entries, it's purely because it was a pain to talk at that point.

that One Twist in rain code's finale (if you know, you know) was genuinely insane in the best way possible. I did have a few gripes with the story, particularly chapter 3, but the game is still extremely worth it for how it all ties together at the end. Highly recommend the game, especially if you're a Dangan Ronpa fan, since it's by the same creator and all!

Really? I've seen the twist a few chapters before. Spoiler. . . . . . . . . . . . . That one thing about Yuuma being #1. That flashback about a young detective trainee meeting No.1 with the book already laid out the idea of Yuuma being potentially the said best detective based on the dialogue. How? The book is Shinigami's book, the young detective commented number 1 looking too young when the older detective told him yet we're shown an old man as No.1 despite saying no one has ever seen him except for a very few people. Or the entire population of Kanai ward are homunculi who become too violent and cannibaly when exposed to the sun thus the eternal rain, but ngl. The thing about them becoming a ravaging zombie after getting killed was one hell of a twist and that chapter honestly scared me since the atmosphere felt different from the usual Kanai ward. Rain, decrepit houses, no living beings around, it scared me.
@TheKisekiNut
@TheKisekiNut 9 месяцев назад
Absolutely excellent twist. Like yeah, I could piece it together before the reveal through deduction but I think that just shows extremely good storytelling. Just like Yuuma, you're slowly understanding the 'mystery' of Kanai Ward, but you still need the confirmation. The realisation of what was happening was chilling in of itself.

I played baten kaitos when it came out for the first time and still consider it one of my favorites. One thing I think is important to mention is, that the original GC version of the came had english dub. Which I find sad that it isn´t included in the remake

My favourite part about Eternights is how ur romantic partner ends up with a consequence in the main story, something tht persona and most other rpgs with romance fails at. Yes the ending kind of hurts but it really motivated me to push through the story to see the ending and what happens to my partner. Nice of them to also include a husbando choice.

I only bought the game because of the husubando choice, and I don't regret it at all. I motored through it on PS5, although the second last battle constantly crashed on me. Still, I enjoyed it so much and having a husubando option that it definitely ranks up there as one of the most memorable games of the year for me, and one that I would consider playing again based on the characters, battle mechanics, and overall style. Such a good game... just thankfully, I got to watch the end on RU-vid since I wasn't able to finish it on my PS5.

I did mention it's not an RPG in the commentary, but I'm not going to apologise for putting it in. I've done it this way for for viewer convenience so everything is in one spot, and also because I know there is an overlap of interest between RPG fans and titles like Raincode. There have been plenty of comments mentioning it and saying how great it was (case in point, yourself)/that they were thinking about buying it, so that shows the interest is there. And thus if I've played it, I can put my own hat in the ring.

@mauri4140 Where Dangaronpa rolls between 8.5 to 9.5 depending on title, I'd say Rain Code falls below, at something like a solid 7.75-8, imo ofc. Not as great as any of Danganronpa games, but still a game I spent over 100$ on the premium collectors edition with plushie 😅 - Also, Kiseki is on point about Kanai Ward, the rain city, vibes!

I was getting Trails Fatigue halfway through CS4 (You try playing through the entire series back to back to back and see how you feel) so I picked up Samurai Remnant for an action RPG pallet cleanser. I will say that I really like it's gameplay style way more than the standard Muso style. I wish that there was a bit more to the exploration, that is more characters to talk to, but that's a small nitpick. I haven't reached the actual finale yet, so I can't comment on the ending. But so far I'm quite enjoying it.

Glad you liked Baten Kaitos. You know it's kinda funny that a good number of games you played are made by Monolith Soft(Baten Kaitos, Xenosaga 2, and Xenosaga 3). Yeah that twist in the middle of the game (Baten Kaitos):was very different for an rpg. As you said the music is top notch.

The prooblem I found with star ocean 2 R is the original has better battle voices in English, and the special moves look well some of them look better than the original, but if you look at Lunar light in the original you could see the moon, then you can fuse it with starflare/starlight but in the sequel remake you cannot fuse them together it looks crap when you try. It's the hype that people like, the game itself isn't better. It also takes you ages to run around in town because they made the towns HUGE, without uppping run speed.

Master Detective Archives: Rain Code was probably my GOTY of 2023! I did not expect the story, plot and worldbuilding to be that good. The Nocturnal Detective Agency characters and their chemistry together were fantastic. Their dialogue and writing were also exceptional. Shinigami is underrated! She deserves more praise dammit. Masterful main villain as well. I would welcome a sequel game. I was not a fan of the gameplay, so it was basically a glorified visual novel but I am not embarrassed to admit that I can like the Visual Novel video game genre.

I kinda agree with you on the story of SO 2. The first game was way more consistent with the main plot and every detour happened for a reason. Except the finale maybe but the rest of the game was stellar up to that point, so I do not mind. And in Second Story R we get a vague main goal and then things happen for no reason and the party keeps doing random things, also for no reason. Like why are we suddenly having a tournament arc? Weren't we supposed to see the king or something? The story is very disconnected. But the gameplay looks fun. I am currently watching a Rena playthrough. I will play Claudes side. But only after I played Star Ocean 1. I guess the main thing people praise about this game is just the insane ways of how you can break the game by just using the mechanics on offer. I am personal,y thinking of getting into the nasuverse myself with 2 visual novels. And maybe Melty Blood someday too. Although fighting games are not really for me. I did buy the entire BlazBlue series though. And I will play it. I may suck hard at these games but the story and soundtrack are amazing. Just be prepared for the story to make literally no sense in the first 2 games until you get the true ending and even then you will have many scenes that make 0 sense because you have 0 context. The story is so convoluted that most people will probably have stroke in trying to make sense of everything. I still love the music. Especially Bullet Dance and Sword of Doom. Those songs are just the goat. I am glad you had fun with most of these games. It just sucks that Crymachina didn't hit you as hard as you wanted it to. But I'm glad the detective game was cool. Shinigami seems like a fun character. That cutscene was hilarious. Here is to a great 2024. I will watch an Ys stream in 6 hours. So technically tomorrow. I will play all my Ys games this year. But I also really wish SO2s story was better. The game is still great though. Except flying enemies. But enemies that fly always suck.

My problem with Rain Code is the small number of potential suspects each chapter have that you already have a clear idea who the culprit is. The game holds the hand of the player too much when solving the mysteries. Even the big 2 twists in the end can already be deduced a few chapters before the big reveal. Or I was just too invested in the game. Unlike Danganronpa, while the kills were creative, one look at the crime scene and you'll already know how the victim died, that's how the game hold the player's hand too much. In DR, you have 15 suspects at the start that you'll only have a vague idea who the culprit is before the reveal, and most of the time, you get it wrong. In a mystery game, I want to be wrong, I want to be kept guessing until the end, it kills the fun when you already know who did it at the start of the investigation.

For me personally Star Ocean 2 Second Story R was at best a 7/10, it was fun in terms of gameplay, but I primarily play these types of games for the story and it was really underwhelming in that regard. Did you play ZWEI2/the Ilvard Insurrection from FALCOM so far excluding the prequel that isn't needed to understand and enjoy ZWEI2? It's relatively short with around 30 hours long depending on how much sidecontent you do. It's often on steam sale for 10 bucks, has a charming localization and voice acting, with tight gameplay and also an EXP curve you control basically cuz you gather EXP by food which can be extended if you got enough food around, which also works out as HP regain! Also perhaps top tier varying Falcom OST and it was their last PC RPG before their "market crashed" in 2008. It's an overshadowed FALCOM RPG someone like you, who is enjoying their RPGs, should try, with or without a guide to get all character notes aka Kiseki like dialogoues!

I'm unsure what to feel about Samurai Remnant thus far -- I'm still in the middle of catching up with Trails and pivoted back to CS III after the prologue. It's mostly the combat that kind of throws me off so far and I am a little heartened to hear your thoughts on it; or rather not hear complaints. I'm mixed bag on Musou style games especially since Fate Extella: the Umbral Star was one of the most tedious of the genre I've played but Fate Extella Link was one of the best. On the other hand, the similarities I saw to the original VN so far felt nice. To me, it felt like they captured something of the vibe and mystery of the VN that none of the recent entries in the series have (except maybe Type Redline). And while Saber and Iori felt incredibly similar to Seiba and Shirou on first glance, I also felt like it highlighted the ways they could develop different. For instance, given one of SR Saber's first actions showed absolute apathy to collateral damage, it's clear they're not the same as even VN Seiba who is notably more ruthless than the adaptations show. Or the fact that Iori's adoption by Musashi mirrors Shirou's by Kiritsugu and both of them share a similar initial view on their respective conflicts, but the worldviews of their respective fathers show how Iori could end up less... invested in others when compared to Shirou. Also, in paying heed to the Fate entries you've consumed, I might recommend watching / reading Today's Menu for the Emiya family. It's very slice of life, so that might not be your thing -- I don't know -- but it does a really good job of capturing the relationships of the original cast in a calm setting. Kind of like Carnival Phantasm but focused on relaxation and cooking instead of humor. As ever, thanks for the video! Interesting to hear your thoughts on so many games.
@TheKisekiNut
@TheKisekiNut 9 месяцев назад
Fate/Samurai is a great game. The similarities were definitely there, but granted I think the development of Saber/Iori in this game does go on a different tangent later on comapred to Shiro/Saber from the original VN.

I was so excited for RAIN CODE, and preordered it, IIRC, more than one year before it was released. The collector's edition was downright shabby. I received my copy fro Amazon, where parts of the box folds were frayed, so I went and ordered it from Walmart and figured I would keep the one that looked better. My Walmart copy also ended up looking pretty rough around the edges. I found the main detective characters really distasteful... and never ended up getting past the third case. Really disappointed, but after hearing your review, I may give it another chance when I get a chance. There was a lot to like, like the ambience, and Shinigami's magical girl transformation. Shinigami reminded me a bit of Tama from AI: The Somnium Files nirvanA Initiative. Right now I'm playing ANONYMOUS;CODE, which so far seems fantastic.f LOVED Eternights, although I had crashing problems on PS5... the second last battle would continuously crash on me just as I was finishing it off... no idea what that was about. I had so much fun with the gameplay and the character interaction, but I ultimately had to watch the endings on RU-vid to even get to them. I seldom play games more than once, but I would play this one again just for the battles (and I'm a strategy RPG fan and not an action RPG fan, typically) and to get to spend more time with the characters. Kudos to them for putting a same-sex romance in this game, too: I wasn't planning to buy it, but I bought it exactly for that reason since I want to support developers who deliver plots with good LGBT representation. I can't believe it only got a 68 on Metaciritc: it deserves a lot more. Still trying to decide if I'm going to play Star Ocean Second Story R. I'm so excited for more Kiseki. I don't know enough JP to play 黎の軌跡 yet, but I still have five games to finish before I got there. (I really jumped around in the story, but am working my way linearly now through it... played Zero, CS1, Azure, FC, Nayuta if you count that, and just finished SC a few days ago. This year is going to be a great year for Kiseki games and merch! I have so much money tied up in preorders and a whole large shelving unit set up to display my LoH / Kiseki stuff and I can't wait to get more and find ways to try to rearrage it further! Nayuta was a game I really loved this year. Awesome video!

Since you’re quite accustomed to the nasuverse, mostly fate that is since you’ve read the vn and watched most of the main stuff. Might as well broaden your horizons on the nasuverse with Witch on The Holy Night and Tsukhime or the remake which releases on June 30th. Haven’t played the remake, but the OG is a classic and Witch on The Holy Night is amazing as the characters are likeable and the visuals is probably the best looking vn I’ve ever played which is apparent as looking at the movie trailer, it kinda just looks like they took a scene out of the vn itself. Btw Witch on The Holy Night (aka Mahoyo) is also one of the best way to get into the nasuverse in general as it was always intended to be the gateway into it as it was the first story written by Nasu to be published but was rejected due to it being too long at the time. Heck even starting with tsukihime is also a good choice since everything is usually standalone it’s just that some concepts are carried over and even if it is it is usually explained nicely like how you mentioned fate samurai remnant explains the concept of the war to players unfamiliar with the concept of fate. (Aught sorry for that long talk) As for star ocean 2 I agree in that the narrative is weak which honestly disappointed me as I heard people saying 2 is the best but in the end I enjoyed 1 and 3 more than 2 in terms of the story and characters. Other than that nice list man, I did plan on buying eternights but that ain’t gonna happen anytime soon due to 2024 already looking quite stacked.

I am actually planning to get Mahoyo and Tsukihime. Although Mahoyo just came out and I want to wait for a sale. I will also wait for Tsukihime to go on sale. I have too big of a backlog anyway but I really love the revamped artstyle form ufotable. If they remake Fate/Stay Night I might also get it. Eventually. Yeah, Star ocean is weird. I am currently watching a lets play of my friend and keep noticing just how disconnected the story is. There is a goal that is being followed. But then you keep having random events in every city with no reason on why the party is doing X right now. Like the Sword tournament. We go the castle and Claude just joins a random tournament for no reason. I thought we wanted to see the king or something. But yeah, Star Ocean 1 had the better story. Less customization in regards to the party but a better connected story that just makes actual sense except the ending maybe. I am kinda excited to play the Nasuverse games. Especially because of the Mystic Eyes of death perception. I hope i can get Mahoyo in the next sale. Although i can not find it anywhere on the Switch eshop for some reason. Is it not on the German eshop? If so, why? But hey, I hope you also enjoy the Tsukihime remake. It looks really beautiful. Especially Arcueid.

@@Nikita_Akashya yep that’s basically my problem with star ocean 2, the flow never felt natural. Like with star ocean 1, the party members had more relevancy towards them or even just more enjoyable as I remembered there are two party members if you have them you can pursue a certain story line which was satisfying, unlike with star ocean 2 with the party members never really felt complete? Like with Dias, I was excited to know more about him but it was so short and not much to it which applies to other cast unless I missed something. That’s nice that you enjoy the new redesigns for Tsukihime, personally I’m a little bit of a purist and will miss old Arcuied and Ciel but I can still dig the new designs so it’s all good. For the E shop problem, if you’re talking about tsukihime remake then it’s cause it hasn’t released yet but I’m guessing you’re talking about mahoyo and if that’s the case then I’m not sure, maybe it isn’t available in the German eshop. I only buy my games physically and with mahoyo i bought the Japanese version since it was cheaper and that version has an English option. Yep backlogs do be the bane of our existence, however anything nasuverse related, I’d wanna play asap much how trails is to me.

@@zaemzoom6807 I actually just found mahoyo after looking again. I would have liked to get a physical version, but the ebay ones are way too expensive and I am not sure if I could get it on Amazon. I guess I just need to look again or something. But I also just ordered a new Micro SD, because my current one is running out of space. I actually do not mind having some games digitally. I do prefer physical games, but some games just are not released physically where I live. But yeah, I am kinda excited to get into the Nasu verse. I tried to avoid it, but Tsukihime is just way too interesting to pass up. And apparently the entire internet waited years for this because the OG story was never released in English or at least not officially. I am up pretty late due to a stream that my American friend is doing at 8, but Germany is 6 hours later, so for me it will be 2 in the morning. Who needs sleep though, am I right? But yeah, the story for Star ocean 2 is just so disconnected. It makes me kinda sad actually. The game is really good, it just sucks that the characters have so little to say in most scenes. Eh, I'll deal with it when I play it myself. I still prefer the first game though. And I also like how Ronyx named his family dog after Roddick. He should have gotten a cat and named it Millie. Perfect!

I like Star Ocean to as a better than average RPG, but I always have to compare it to Tales of Destiny 2 or rather Tales of Eternia which came out for the same system. Star Ocean 2 has awful baby like combat where you press 2 buttons and the only reason it has any difficulty at all is that the AI sucks. The idea of the story is what I think about most Square games is it has great world building giving you a sense of wonder with what I call "movie moments" that are highly memorable moments. Tales of Eternia on the hand excels at everything other than the English voice acting. It doesn't have all that "freedom" nonsense so it tells a concise story that will be familiar if you have played any tales of games, but the characters are charming as usual in tales of games. The combat in tales of Eternia was WAY above its time, it's basically a fighting game with RPG mechanics. It's so incredibly fluid, which makes it hard to believe it is a ps1 game. To me, Star ocean will always be the inferior clone of Tales of games, with its only real appeal being the more unique setting with the whole space theme. The one real flaw that all tales of games has for me is the music, like none of it is awful, but 99% of it is completely forgettable.

Big problem with Star Ocean 2 (Base game) comes from... it had limited budget and they weren't able to implement it all... At least it is what I read while playing PS1 version (before PSP was done)... First continent was done very good... 3 recruitable characters that appear there all have their side stories. Second continent was much more rough. None of the recruitable character had side story. Third continent was laughing stock... There was literary noting (1 village, and dungeon on whole continent). After that we have second part of game that barely holds with "go there, and get stuff", by this time there is almost no characterisation (some characters don't even got much PAs). In second part of game there is 1 whole city that has no story in it (except few PAs). As bad guys appear in part 2 then ofc they are barely developed. Other notable downside (that is glaringly visible in Rena playthrough, especially if you recruit Ashton) is lack of Si-Fi themes/feeling... even second part that supposed to be more si-fi still feel way to much magic/fantasy (only final dungeon has serious si-fi vibes)... To Summarise... Game Story is MVP (minimal viable product) it cover from beginning to end, but not much meat is there. Comparing to SO6 I thought after slow start of SO6 story it gets much more interesting by the end than SO2, but still preferred SO2 game systems much more. If there is game that deserves FF7:R treat then it would be ideal candidate... To finish Game That had lot of potential. While I enjoyed my (nostalgia tinted) time with SO2:R I don't think it deserves "Overwhelmingly Positive" rating at steam.

So there is a dub for baten kaitos it just wasn't implemented in the remaster for some reason. Thankfully there is a mod that implemented the dub back into the game unfortunately that requires you to have a modded switch or play it on emulator which is what I will do. It genuinely pisses me of that the dub has just been removed! Tt's terable for acces ability. As someone who has a visual impairment playing games without a dub is straight up painful. It took me 5 months to complete trails from zero, azure I still haven't finished. Meanwhile I completed trails of cold steel 1 through 4 within 4 months(as in al of them back to back within 4 months). It's the best example I can always give to show how typering playing without dub is for me. Why is it still a question if modern games will get dubbed? How do company's not understand rust it isn't just a preference but a acces ability feature?!

I really wish Raincode wasn’t a Switch Exclusive. I do own a Switch, but it’s a pretty old launch model that often gave me trouble with the joysticks connecting. I could buy the cheaper model like Lite but I just don’t think it’s worth it for one game, and also just the fact I personally don’t want to support Nintendo nowadays. I have quite a lot of history with Danganronpa, I don’t associate with it nowadays due to problems in the fandom and my own dislike of the writing after getting older, but it’s definitely had some positive influences on me and gave me plenty of happy memories. So I’d be more than happy to support more games like RainCode being released, I love Detective style games with some supernatural elements. For now, I’ll probably just play it via emulator. It’s really a shame.

Im playing through kuro now and its my favorite trails. I have played all of them up to Reverie. I would not recommend waiting for NISA as they butcher their localization for woke pandering ( look at their open admittance to completly changing CS 3 due to " female sexual cultural differences" in the end they butchered the creators true meaning. I know kuro will be waay worse, much more sexual content to anger the sjw femanists as I am sure now with CS 3 CS4 and Reverie that NISA will freak out over and completly censor or 180 the meaning of the beats of the game. Tharbad grimcats etc. I also liked the music I feel the popular opinion of the online community who have played it is to have an instant hate boner for this singa guy or whatever. Music is servicable with some bangers. Not sky - cs 2 standards but imo better than CS 4 and Reverie. Anyways my 2 cents, I would not play NISAs nutuered and altered version if you can, it shows 0 respect for the writers who creates zemuria as a whole. You can support them on steam eith a patch and the CLE version

But even thou Lianne sandlot was called the " Lance Maiden" good old NISA cant use " gendered language anymore thanks to wokeness and shes called " The Beautys Blade" at the small cutscene at the end of reverie showcasing her. Truely despicable and it adds to my case, DO NOT BUY NISA lol. They had tried to STOP independant Kuro translatoes last year for their total control of all falcom games getting their english language spin. True villians wirh no resprct for falcom writers themselves. I wish somebody with the ability to have transparency with these developers show them what NISA actually does.
