For Number 1, I use bra bags or delicates bags to keep all my underwear and socks together in the wash. It's a relatively affordable purchase and I've saved so many socks from going missing. Just a quick tip if you have issues with socks!
My husband was very tall. We would come home from someone's house and he would tell me what was on top of someone's refrigerator. Do you think he would clean off the top of ours? No!
I agree with almost everything she said except my linens. Until my children move away from home I will need all of my crazy amounts of sheets and pillowcases. My family hosts between 4-20 and once 26 guests several times a year. The kids invite all there friends from all over and often the parents too. It’s loud and chaotic and SO MUCH FUN! But it takes a lot of bedding, lol. I probably could just ask people to bring their own but I love being a “superhost” so for the few years I have left with my kids at home, I will continue to store extra linens and pillows and blankets and air mattresses and dishes. However! I do have space in the basement for all the extras so they aren’t cluttering up my house all year round.
Of course. Logic and lead must prevail. I have my full size bed. Love it love it. My treat to myself a cream color Pottery Barn iron bed. I have two sets of sheets. One set I bought on sale and the other set I bought on sale and both are really good quality. So between the two sets I probably paid $70 total. Which is cheaper sheets these days but a clean set goes on. Dirty set goes in the wash. So for me 2 sets are perfect and your place oh my God you poor baby you would be sheetless literally oh..what is that great movie 'Sheetless in Seattle". No no that's not it. 😎
You are my favorite go-to for RU-vid wisdom! My new friend! I came to you for organizing...but please share your makeup favorites! You absolutely glow!!
Great tips! Re: books: borrowing them is all well until you realize that your small library that's only open when you have to work does not have any of the books you like (e.g. other languages) 🤦 so yeh, buying it is for me. And I also have a REALLY hard time giving them away
I didn't know about that little bottle symbol, thank you. I literally had a bottle in my hand when watching that and it went straight to the trash. More where that came from.
Kallie, where do you get the clear shelves you have for your children’s story books? They’re what I’ve been looking for! Unless you made them yourself from Dollar Tree finds 😅
I've never actually lost a sock... worn them until they disintegrated, yes, but lost a sock due to laundry shenanigans? No. For things that tend to go missing in the wash, try using a delicates bag to keep them together; you could even hang the bag off of the side of your laundry basket to stash in those easy-to-lose pieces as they accumulate, in which case just zip it up and toss in the wash come laundry day - no fuss, no muss!
Kallie is like that friend who tells you the cold hard truth but in a way that isn’t hurtful. Like YES - I am definitely keeping way too much paper; can’t believe I didn’t realize this sooner 😂
Wow so eye opening! Everything was so true. I think one other thing is pics or screenshots. I screenshot so many things 80% of the time I never look back at it or repost it haha
Trained my self right when I take it to send/post it immediately and then use the “delete screenshot” option before closing the app! My most important pics are the only ones I save now!
Yes, same! So true! 🙈😅 I've started to go back and delete old screenshots, I thought about just "deleting all", but I know that among that wast majority of random screenshots, there are some that are important to me and that I really want to keep. So.... gotta check through them all, step by step 🥴
I had a cute pair of socks that were light weight black and white stripes. I really liked them. I couldn’t throw the loner away. Years later I found the other sock folded up in an old sheet. I had my cute pair of socks back! I understand that doesn’t happen often but just sayin’.
@@blessedwifeandmama I had it in my sock drawer in the back. I still have them and wear them today. After I wrote the first comment I went and checked on them and kissed them. They spark joy. Hahahahaha!
That has happened to me too! Years ago I did a month long experiment (when all five children were young and at home) where I mated up all the socks before putting them in the washer. If a sock was missing I searched until I found it. They were all over the place: behind the bed, between the sheets, in the back of the closet, in the toy box, etc. That entire month I never lost a sock in the washer or dryer. After that I put a small basket in the laundry area for "orphan" socks. The only time I threw out a sock was when we moved. Otherwise, the mate eventually turned up.
I love your videos! I get ideas to implement in everyone. I have adapted your "declutter something everyday" routine. Life changing. Especially for an older woman. I no longer have the energy to do a huge declutter. This keeps me on top of things. I've learned to "work smarter not harder" in my old age. 😃
I just moved 6 months ago from a house I had lived in for over 10 years, and LORD the decluttering I did! I’m about to move again in 2 weeks and I know I can declutter all over again!
I chuckled when you mentioned decluttering books. When we were moving in with my daughter, her husband and 5 grandchildren I made the decision to only take one book with me...the one I was reading! In the laundry room in our highrise apartment building I left an outdoor storage bin filled to the brim with every kind of book imaginable! Even now that I am living in my own apartment since my husband passed I only have 4 books. I use an app called Libby which connects to the libraries in my city and I borrow ebooks and read on my tablet. Spices I need to declutter since I am sure 90% are expired!
Yep. I use hoopla for my library in Seminole County in Florida. I think the other one is also available but for some reason Hoopla and I do better together. And I totally agree with you. Enjoy your books. The best part is I can expand it on the iPad so I can see it better. I'm getting old. And I like bigger words that I can see bigger. Ha ha peace and blessings.
I take my read books to public book shelves, of which we have a lot in my town. But I have around 150 unread books on my shelves and in my ebook-apps .. and the vast majority are physical books. I need to read more and buy less, I know.
I also like Libby but I keep a few books and blu ray movies that I watch every year. Sort of “Classics” my family enjoys like the grinch, shrek 😂 and books that I reference a lot with page markers so I don’t have to go searching through my iPad
I can honestly say, in 55 yrs of doing laundry, I have never lost a sock. I'm also a physical book person. I tried Kindle but never really got into it for very long.
I always buy one type of black sock from our local supermarket for myself. They only go missing when my husband puts them away usually in his own sock drawer so I always know where to find them.
Free little libraries are also a good place to rehome books. In my area I rarely see children's books in them, and when I've put my daughter's old ones they get snapped up with a quickness.
I just did with a bunch of our childrens books the other day! Totally fine books, just don’t fit my kids age or I didn’t enjoy reading them. Hopefully now some slightly older kids will get joy out of them
Really have enjoyed getting all black socks for my son (Amazon basics). Makes it so much easier to 'match' them and they don't show the dirt like others can.
Kallie! Take your sock game one step further. Put a small bin in the space socks belong. Then don't fold them!!! If they all match, why fold them?! Kid socks come in big packs of navy or black. Every year before school I assess my kids socks. If they need more or bigger ones, they get to choose their color and style. And I buy enough to last the year. We literally never fold socks. Well, I usually fold my husband's bc he prefers that but still so much less folding. Also, use that cumin. 😂 It's super versatile.
The paper 🤣 I will pick up around my dad's chair and table next to it and be like "dad so you need this scrap of paper with a random number sequence?" And he'll be like "yes! Don't throw that out! Leave it on top!" Like it's the coordinates to a cache of gold or something. A month or so later he'll be looking for something in his papers and start asking everyone what all these different scrap papers with numbers are for, phone numbers with no name to vin numbers etc with no information. He ends up tossing it all... But those moments of helping are so predictable and make me laugh because those inevitable VERY IMPORTANT numbers will always be there 🤣
Sock hack for everyone…especially parents with littles: pin or clip a large lingerie/sweater bag to your laundry basket or hamper for each family member and put their socks in the bag! Then all you have to do is zip them up and toss them in the washer. Simplifies sorting socks!!!
thank you for the inspiration :) the scene when the woman opened the cupboard full of Tupperwares made me laughing so much :) thank you for your funny way of expressing things too :)
I know you weren't "targeting" spices when you mentioned with vitamins, but that really hit home. I have so many spices, and I've heard they lose their potency over time. So something I got for that one recipe years (and years) ago? I'm not feeling so guilty letting it go now. Thank you!
Yeah, if you forget your ground up spices for a few years - or buy them already old - they taste like sawdust. Whole spices last for much, much longer.
Your tip about matching socks is how I feel about towels. I only buy white towels, so I can wash individual towels as needed and replace old ones and still everything matches. No more mismatched random towels cluttering up the linen closet!
I love that I came across this video as I've been decluttering paper 😂 from Hello Fresh to credit card applications and newsletters, I feel like it's an insult if I throw this stuff away! But now I'm actually sitting down and dealing with it, including revamping my two drawer filing cabinet with pretty, organized files! Lots still to shred....I got this! Thanks Kallie for your awesome, uplifting and inspiring advice and look into your life. You are amazing!
So many good points!! I was a teacher for 34 years. We are Notorious for hoarding! The teacher I worked with for the last 7 years (before I stopped teaching) was forever getting rid of things! 😜 It was SO foreign to me!! She taught me so much about purging!! School & home!! I am extremely thankful for ALL she taught me, but one of the most ongoing things was to let things go! We are still good friends, and I do feel a sense of satisfaction when she realizes she got rid of something she now needs that I actually kept that I can let her use!!🙌🏻🎉😂
I have 1 set of sheets per bed. That’s it. I don’t have to fold and I don’t have store. They just go from the bed, to the washer/dryer, and back on the bed. Done.
Although I’m sure many a times you have discussed this a reminder like this is always awesome. Me and my little walk to a neighborhood donate book store. Bring one take one.
Talking books. Here in the U.K. Our red telephone boxes ,which are redundant now, are being used as a book swap. No cost. You take your read books and put in the box and help yourself to books you haven't read. I'm loving your tips and advice.
The secret slob just did a one month spring declutter. She has a free printable and a video for each day, minus weekends. She covered all of these, I think
Anita! I follow Steph (The Secret Slob) as well. This 80 year old lady in Toronto Canada has learned so much from Steph and Kallie, and they are so refreshing and unprepossessing, aren’t they? Their homes look like REAL homes and not a magazine shoot. 😊 They’re like young friends with good insights.
I unfollowed old friends who really wasn’t friends anymore some years ago. They made no effort to remain friends and I had let go of trying and we did not even write happy birthday anymore. So, I first ”paused” on fb then eventually removed. Back then they just reminded me how I was still single, had to live at my parent looking for jobs and they were getting marrried, having families etc. I was just Draining. So, no idea what they are up to in that town hours away from me but I am happy. And now working and living on my own again, yey.
You can put Kindle on your iPad or whatever for free. And it really is worth a difference. But you're very young and you don't need glasses too much to read. When your eyes get older due to whatever, the Kindle or Hoopla from the library can really save your life. Because you can see it better so when you read bigger and fancier words you can see them better as bigger and fancier words. Just a thought
After doing laundry for over 40 years, I have only lost one sock. My method is to give each pair an identifying mark, number , letter or object with a permanent marker. Make sure both socks go into the washer, if they both don't come out of the dryer, you know it is between or behind your appliances. It works and saves money. Of course, it does take a little effort, but worth it.
I had a lot of makeup and skin scare and I finally threw them all away but one mascaram one eyeshadow. Lip gloss a few. I don't wear makeup very often.
You know what, I have an idea for a video. I would be interested in your hair care. You hair is so so healthy and shiny. I would love to hear on what you do to have such healthy hair. I bet it’s more than the products you use.
Would be seriously interested in what to DO with the things to be decluttered. Some are easy to figure. Donations of clothes to women’s shelters, items to the local thrift store of choice, are easy solutions. If I refer to your list of 53 items to de-clutter, it’s a great list. However with most of them I found myself asking “ so what do you suggest I do with this stuff now?” Filling up landfills is undesirable. Reusability suggestions/options would be a GREAT addition to your video series. You’ve already given us lots of great encouragement & ideas for de-cluttering. So do the missing socks just go in the trash or could they be useful by people who care for animals or birds? My sisters school has a table in the staff area where teachers bring in stuff they’re decluttering and just set it on the table, free to anyone who has a clever use for it. It always disappears, within days if not hours. Empty plastic/glass jars. Unused yarn. Nail polish. Christmas/Gift card fronts are used by some groups to make new cards. Just to name a few. So do have a few solutions of my own making but I suggest take the 53 (and 11) on your lists and help us figure out how to disburse them. It’s the main thing that keeps me from actually having them leave my world. I will keep watching for that video - and hope.
I have joined a couple of "buy nothing" facebook groups in my area and usually list stuff on there and it goes fairly quickly. For the rest of the random stuff I have a recycling station in my home where things like stationery, batteries, clothes that are beyond use etc go and then a couple of times a year I will take them to various recycling places. Hope that helps 🙂
Your probiotics need to be refrigerated or lose potency after a few weeks. Good stores that sell them keep them in refrigerated section-on the shelf without is worthless. Love your videos.
I promise you I have saved mismatched socks for over 10 years & out of those 10 years I have found maybe 5 out of 20 of the other match after several moves & years later 🤣 so I do wear mismatched ones on days I have to run out the door. I love ❤️ your videos. You have helped me so much. I spend 5 mins each day cleaning off my living room table that I havnt been able to use for over a year & my counter tops are cleared off. I’m still struggling w the dishes & cleaning out the sink as I just don’t care most of the time but I know it won’t take me more than 5 mins. I’m doing them today finally! I also organized my medicine cabinet & most of my hygiene products thanx to you! I love the idea of getting the clear organizers for drawers & having just what I normally use on a daily/weekly basis in the top drawers. Time to do those soon & just toss! Today we are organizing my sons toys. Whatever doesn’t fits into the 20 bins of his new organizer… is going into a box for donations! He hasn’t played with them all for years. With jewelry decluttering there is a great non profit that repurposes jewelry & makes beautiful pieces for sale that fund helping animals. I will post when I find her Instagram. I am sending her a package 📦 soon. Ty again! ❤️ By the way why didnt I think of just getting white & black socks of the same kind?! Would make life easier. No I have to have 20 diff kinds of socks. I pray 🙏 for a more simple life.
I tried the only one color for socks. Drives me crazy. Just cause they are black doesnt mean they are the same. I didnt get the exact same kind when i bought new ones and now i have to match lots of similar looking but differentfeeling black socks. 🤣
I have always bought one color socks. All white. I have 3 sons and a husband. I put their initial on the bottom to keep them straight. I get books from the library. Can’t afford to buy.
I did declutter the socks, spices, utensils, dishes, pots, clothes, handbags, empty Apple product boxes, fake jewelry, portable cheap furniture, baskets (if I need one, I use a box, if I change my mind it can be recycled). I never participated in social media, a complete waste of time.
Reminder to self, I must stop buying skincare !!!! Switched to bar soaps, Cerave or Dove are fine. Cerave even makes a SA bar soap. BTW, you can use old pillowcases to cover winter coats and jackets. No need to buy wardrobe covers.
Soooo many things I can relate too… the white & black socks - genius ! I just got new socks couple months ago that came in like 8 colors & I love them BUT having to match them every time I’m washing is starting to drive me crazy!! Love all your advise/tips
Socks go into this porthole in the dryer that turns them into random storage container lids that have no containers to match. Still trying to figure out where the hair ties and bobby pins disappear to.
For Number 1, I use bra bags or delicates bags to keep all my underwear and socks together in the wash. It's a relatively affordable purchase and I've saved so many socks from going missing. Just a quick tip if you have issues with socks!
The one thing I keep that I do use are old sheets and tablecloths for covering plants in a freeze. Granted I use them a handful of times a year, but I’ve lost plants that I’ve spent years to cultivate. (Living in Florida, we don’t always get a freeze, but when we do, we are usually underprepared!) I’m not using my good linens for that! I keep them in storage in our garage with clothespins. I can’t make excuses for anything else here!
Love your videos! #1 down - I’ve no space on top of the fridge. #2 going down tonight - the sock drawer. It’s so full of an assortment of socks that it won’t close. Odd socks have numerous uses - I’m a photographer and they are great for lenses and flashes. Jewellery and Books I will never declutter but now I read books online. Social media is a work in progress. Cleaning supplies, cosmetics, medications, Tupperware etc. when I can cope with them! Spare Pillowcases are great for sending fabric items to the Diabetes box. No plastic required. Paper is threatening to swamp me - little piles and piles of it! Thanks for inspiring me!
Loved watching this! We’re moving to a new build house and we’ll have cabinetry above the fridge too😊 I’m so relived there’ll be no “above the fridge” storage opportunities soon.
Makeup/beauty supplies may be good for some extended period generally, but they are hotbeds for bacterial growth picked up from our skin, fingers, or contaminated applicators/brushes. Better to toss after about 6mos or less. Make certain you wash/replace your applicators/brushes frequently and wash your face/hands before applying.
I simplified my sock drawer by no longer matching up my socks. Waste of time, I have one type of sock, so whenever I need socks I just grab two from the drawer and get on with me day, lol. Having to match socks was one of the reasons my laundry tended to be left in a pile, now that I no longer force myself to do that, I put it away so much faster, lol
Good video Kallie! A video about how to attack your children's old clothes that doesn't fit anymore would be helpful. Every time I think about getting rid of the U-haul truck load I have I get overwhelmed and anxious because there is so much. Any helpful tips about how to accomplish this?
Where do you donate kids' books besides a Little Free Library? I will probably keep a lot because I enjoy having them, and I like that my mom has books from my childhood at her house and hope to be a grandmother with vintage books one day. But I have about 400 children's books, so...I can make a big donation soon.
I actually put my engagement ring on top the fridge and forgot I hadon Halloween (specific date but a friend came over to show me her two year oldest costume and I must've washed my hands and put them up). Almost 6 months later when I'd looked everywhere and was convinced that my idiot self had lost them, lo and behold I was looking for something and guess what I found!‽?!
I was grateful to have a lot of pillowcases when I had to leave my snowbound house in a hurry. My daughter had all my suitcases because she had gotten married and moved. I had a power outage and couldn't do laundry, so I sorted it into pillowcases. As for the top of the frig, I only have 1 or 2 things there. I dispose of my expired medication at the sheriff's office, and I just can't part with my books because they're like old friends. Love your videos.
I wish I had some colorful socks. It's just Danny and I and we don't have a problem with it. I need some new sets but can't afford them. Yes, I need to declutter Social Media. I do unsub from a lot of people all the time anymore. Great tips. I have subbed to way to many Homemaking Vlogs because they have the same videos every single time. I am slowly unsubbing. Same from supplements and vitamins. I love all of my books. I have a few books cases. They make me happy. I have a lot of Kindle books because many are free. They don't take up any room. Yet, a Kindle is not WARM AND FUZZY. Books are. Great video.
My family buys me fun matching ankle socks for every holiday or bday. I always say “life’s too short to match socks”. Haha-- it’s actually more exciting when they don’t match bc you’re like “wow! 2 different fun, cool socks!”
I only have a few cleaning products-dish detergent, glass cleaner for counters, Murphy's oil soap (for stain removal for clothes and to scrub the floor), and toilet bowl cleaner.
Socks🤦🏻♀️We raised 6 boys, close in age and early on I started buying socks in bulk, twice a year-all the same- whites and blacks. We had a community sock dresser in the hallway outside their rooms, and it made all the difference. I also gave each boy two bath towels in their chosen color and they were responsible for them- one to use while the other went in the laundry. It completely eliminated the wet towels left on floors and no one claiming them.
Don't know how, but I never lost a piece of "tupperware". Melted a lid once on the oven, but it was a set with several lids with the same size, so everything is still useable. Superpower? 😄
