Hey! I'm Alanna - a twenty-something documenting my life as a Canadian living in England.
I share the ups and downs of an expat living abroad and what it's really like living in the UK. It's not always easy, but there's been so many wonderful experiences, too. I post a RU-vid video every Tuesday and an additional video every Saturday on my Patreon account. I also livestream every Wednesday and Sunday at 6:30pm GMT on Twitch.

It was made in America by NBC in 1965. One of the oddest British programmes shown in recent years for me was The Autopsy which showed a human dissection anatomist Gunther Von Hagens, even for channel 4 it was a bit out there. By the way, nice work with the video editing, it's looking very professional.

Alanna's here and now I know it's Tuesday. Woo-hoo! Great call on doing 'strangest' as it allows for a lot more of your humour and that's a good thing. I agree with all on your list that I've seen, which is about 8 I think. Two strange shows for you are Tipping Point and Deal Or No Deal (not sure if they're strictly British though). In the first you watch counters drop down onto platforms, just like the 2p seaside game. How exciting. In the second, you watch people open boxes while making it seem like there was a mythical, mystical, magical importance to the order they picked. There isn't and that's all there is to the show. Nothing more.

I didn't watch many episodes of embarrassing bodies, but there was one episode in particular that's always stuck in my mind. Some older guy went on there, think he was in his early 50's? And said he likes to go clubbing and stuff, but sometimes he has this problem where brown watery liquid would like seep out of his arse? Anyway, the doctors went away and did their "tests" or whatever, and came back and told this guy that there was nothing wrong with him, and that he basically just didn't know how to wipe his own arse properly, and the liquid was just his shltty bum hole and sweat mixing together and running out of his crack. So not only did this guy go on national TV to let everyone know about his runny arse, but then it was revealed that this man in his 50's didn't know how to do something that most people learn when they're about 6. Good times.

That was great till Christmas when there was on occasion more than 2 things on at the same time that you wanted to watch so then you were into swapping tapes with neighbours. My Mother the Car was actually an American comedy series. It aired in 1965-66, and lasted for one season, and 30 episodes. It starred Jerry Van Dyke, brother of Dick Van Dyke. The car was a 1928 Porter, a fictional make, and was assembled from the parts of several different real vintage cars. The voice of the car was provided by Ann Sothern, a Hollywood star from the 1940s. I watched this show in the 1960s, and enjoyed it.

Gotta love the urban myths of our childhood. The reason the characters often “acted” weird in M R was that the BBCs English script bore little resemblance to the on-screen action, which was based upon the quite different original French TV script! It’s easy to forget Roger the Cabin Boy because his character name was Tom, not Roger!
@DaveBartlett
@DaveBartlett 3 года назад
@Ian Brown ...Seaman Stains didn't exist, and there was a 'Master Mate' but no 'Master Bates'. As has already been said: the cabin boy's name was Tom not Roger. All of this, that people claim to remember is a figment of their imagination, originally put about by pathetic little schoolboys with senses of humour about as inadequate as their intellect. But then there'll always be people who'll convince themselves that it's all true and be certain they remember it. (Perhaps YOU didn't "miss your childhood in The Magic Roundabout" but it would seem that you missed your childhood in Captain Pugwash... or perhaps never actually watched it, and just listened to all the crap you heard about it!)

@@AdventuresAndNaps When you get back to the UK, you'll have to see if you can catch: "Mortimer & Whitehouse: Gone Fishing" (just started it's third series.) It doesn't sound like much and at first thought, it might be classed as a bit weird. It's just Bob Mortimer (possibly the funniest man on British television,) and Paul Whitehouse (ditto, but also possibly the UK's finest living character actor too,) enjoying a bit of fishing in various locations in the British Isles. Now this might sound a bit as if it's on a par with Trainspotting Live, but the beauty of it is in the glorious footage of the British countryside & coastline, and the comedy is in the interaction between Bob & Paul. It's real-life stuff, (kind of fly-on-the-wall, if the locations weren't almost all outside,) and neither Bob nor Paul are scripted. Both have something in common having both recently undergone serious heart surgery, and both are trying to make lifestyle changes. Paul falls back on his lifelong hobby of angling, and Bob (who knows bugger all about fishing,) accompanies him, arranging accommodation, and trying to provide a heart-healthy diet for the pair of them. It still doesn't sound astoundingly entertaining, but the laughs are only matched by the occasional touching moments. Highlights: Bob Mortimer getting so excited that he almost wets himself on landing his first fish, (then also his second, his third, etc. - Bob gets easily excited!) My favourite moment is when the pair are enjoying their dinner and Paul asks Bob what it is that he's drinking, Bob replies that it's a tradiionally brewed English pale ale from a local brewery and that he's supporting local producers. He then asks Paul what he's drinking to which Paul replies: "It red wine; it's French, and I don't give a F*#k!" I hope you get a chance to catch it. It'll be one thing to make coming back to England particularly worthwhile, (but don't tell your boyfriend that!) 😃
@GrimlarLex
@GrimlarLex 3 года назад
There are also a few weird but good shows around, for example James May : The Reassembler where the presenter put things back together, including such highlights as a 1950's lawnmower, a 1960's food mixer and so on. The interest I suppose is whether you enjoy listening to James May talk about some of the social context or engineering ideas around the item being worked on. Also James May Toy stories, where you take a classic childrens favourite toy and see how far you can push the idea. So, building a full size house out of Lego, a bridge out of Meccano, a 10 mile long model railway track and so on. And then theres Time Team, after 20 seasons it had become well known and reasonably well respected, but it cant have been easy selling the idea of televising some archaeologists scraping away at dirt for three days with the risk of finding very little if anything. Or perhaps two of the series it inspired, Extreme Archaeology, similar to Time Team but smaller scale and much more dangerous locations, or Pub Dig, also smaller scale and as the name suggests looking for history underneath some of the UK's beer gardens. Initially it sounds daft, but some pubs have been at the same location for hundreds of years, protecting whats underneath them from later rebuilding etc. As for Mrs Browns Boys, I havent watched it, so I can only point to the UK's long tradition of Drag Queens and Pantomime Dames. As for the Trainspotting show, I flirted with the hobby very briefly as a child, (my older brother was a trainspotter,) but it was at one point very popular in this country. I guess it appeals to the collector in some people, and provides the opportunity to travel around the country and see different places, not just railway stations. Combine it with a visit to a museum or something if transpotting on its own sounds a bit dry. We're British, we love a bit of eccentricity, a bit of smut, maybe a laugh and maybe learn something, ideally all of them. Which is why I like QI XL so much I guess.

Hi Alanna, this is my second time watching this video!!! When I was working, one of my colleagues, originally from Italy, said "Your quiz shows are so strange here in Australia, no one ever takes off their clothes!!!". I really couldn't work out an answer to that one!!! Did you ever hear about the Japanese game show called "Gannon"? On one episode, they made all their contestants drink several buckets of water, then locked up all the rest rooms. You can imagine what happened!!! Talking about UK train TV shows; there was a show based on the life of the railway workers on a particular railways station in London. On one occasion, after a power blackout, they "lost" three suburban trains full of peak hour passengers. They eventually found the missing trains stuck in the tunnel near London Bridge Station. Without any power, they had no way to contact their base and the map showing the trains also went blank. Anyway, take care. Robert.

Hi Alanna, Wow!! I had no clue that UK had shows like "Naked Attraction". We certainly don't have that one here. We did have a show sometime back called "Naked and Afraid", where they put contestants into the wilderness without any clothes....too weird!!! Now, if they can get dogs to fly passenger jets, it will definitely save a fortune on wages!!! Years ago, I saw a British train TV show about the life and times of staff on a London Tube railway station. During the show, they "lost' three packed trains during rush hour in the London Tube. The trains were eventually found near London Bridge Station. I remember "My Mother the Car" shown on TV here. We had a medical show here called "When Operations Go Wrong". I don't even want to describe that one. We also have "Mrs Brown's Boys" here, though we have never watched it. We have Aussie versions of "Catch Phrase" and "Gogglebox". Have you ever seen "Monte Python's Flying Circus"? Now that is definitely a strange British show. Finally, here is an old weird Australian TV show called "The Auntie Jack Show". The main star is a huge fat man with a mustache wearing a dress, while riding a motor bike. The there song "Farewell Auntie Jack" was very popular over the radio at the time as well. One of Auntie Jack's famous phrases was "Goodbye me little lovelies"!!! (See link below). Anyway, take care and all the best. Robert. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-unNSTBx0uok.html
