Gail and I have travelled extensively by Amtrak trains as part of our "North America by Train" series of travel vlogs. That includes overnight trains on the Coast Starlight, the Callifornia Zephyr and the Capitol Limited, mostly in a Roomette but also in coach. We have travelled on cross border trains between the United States and Canada on board the Maple Leaf (New York City to Toronto) and the Cascades (Vancouver to Seattle). We've tried out the high speed Acela train from Washington DC to NYC. And we've had an unexpected "train journey" by an Amtrak Thoroughfare Bus and San Joachims train between LA and San Francisco by way of Bakersfield (due to a cancelled train).
We've accumulated a lot of travel insights in taking Amtrak. The purpose of this video is to pass on some of that practical knowledge to you. We want to make your first trip across America by train as enjoyable and as stress-free as possible. So let's get going with a few practical tips on taking Amtrak trains on your next transcontinental journey.

Thanks. We will be doing lots more train travel as well as some long distance walks in Europe. And we will be doing some local walks here in Winnipeg...because traveling is something that starts at our front doors.

I’m heading west on the CZ this July 4th with my son in 2 roomettes, which was cheaper than a bedroom and give us better views on both sides of the car.

That is a very good tip, one we had not thought of. The only real downside is the lack of a private bathroom.

@@TravelIntently that’s true. But since it saved us about $500, I’ll deal with it for 2 days.😀

I have to agree. I’ll gladly trundle down the aisle to use a bathroom if it saves that much!

Yes, there are two versions of the Viewliner cars with slightly different configurations and features. Something to keep in mind for sure.

Did they ask you for a id I’m supposed to board but I forgot my id

We’ve never been asked for ID, except when crossing the US/Canada border (passport required). But not for travel inside the US. However, you will need your train ticket in all cases. Best of luck!
