I'm a product manager and my direct experience is mostly related to physical items, but my opinion is that most things shouldn't be bought cheap if you can help it. Just about everything from shoes to brake pads to windows to bread has a "cheap" option available these days. And it's usually junk that is best avoided. There are exceptions, and this doesn't apply when you get to the luxury end of the scale, but generally speaking you want to buy the best you can afford. The cheap version of something is rarely up to snuff and will often cost you more in the long run, as well as provide less value during use. Markets are pretty efficient so making it cheap usually means corners were cut to get there. This is often done in design, material, and build quality which usually results in a shorter useful life and/or lower efficiency. But it can be even more pernicious, from poor labor and environmental practices, to deceptive marketing, to outright building (or growing in the case of food) the item with hazardous materials. If you can't afford the quality version of something, my recommendations are buy the quality version used, wait and keep saving, or my personal favorite, ask yourself if you really even need the item in the first place. Often, the answer is that you don't. Remind yourself that you live in a consumerist society that often prioritizes quantity over quality and actual utility. You don't actually need that $29.99 air fryer. You have a stove in your kitchen. Try using that instead. Nothing Wal Mart can sell you will save you more money than not buying it in the first place. The funny thing is that cheap people are usually the first ones to whine about how "they don't make things like they used too." Yeah, we stopped making it like we used to because your cheap ass stopped buying it the second someone else ripped it off and offered you a junk version of it for $1 less.

A hobby of mine is building kit aircraft. This is how I think of aircraft engines some guys try to cheap out on a car conversion engine (15K) but when it just don’t perform or keeps breaking down they get frustrated, and will bite the bullet and put an actual aircraft engine on it (30K). That’s a hard lesson to learn for some but a great example of it being worth spending the extra up front. Instead of buying it twice for more.

The Money Guy Show I finally got to watch the whole video. I really liked the advice. It’s definitely worth it to spend the money on a good accountant because they’ll save you way more then they cost. I think last year my accountant paid me $340 to use his services. Which is unusually low for him. But also with insurance make sure you’re only shopping every 3 years. That’ll help you get the best premium. If you do every year. The insurance companies can see that history and they think “ok. I gotta hose this guy so I can make my money this year”. If you shop every 5 years. The insurance company thinks “he’s never gonna leave so I can give him a good price to keep him the first year but hose him each year after that”. But by doing every 3 years they charge you reasonably the whole time to try to keep you signed on.
