The Q415, Q416, Q135, Q136, Q137, and Q138 through my area all have DPUs. If the train is long and heavy enough, they’ll have 2 or three in front with 2 mid-train. Learned rather recently that DP isn’t as much for power purposes as it is for air equilibrium purposes. Gotta keep that pressure in the back as close as possible to the front for obvious air brake reasons.
@cdavid8139
@cdavid8139 3 года назад
It is for distributing the power reasons...not just for air brake benefits. By having power in the middle or end of the train in addition to the head end you remove the stress on the leading equipment and 'distribute' it throughout the train
@StarTard8
@StarTard8 3 года назад
@@cdavid8139 There are multiple purposes for having DP, air brake equilibrium being one and power distribution being another. It’s easier, period, for both power and air purposes to have the locos positioned throughout the train, but even on completely empty 13,000 ft trains DP is sometimes necessary just to have another compressor mid-train to equalize brake pressure. Sure, you can run all the power on the head end but brake capacity suffers greatly toward the rear with nothing to keep pressure steady through the train; thus, the presence of DP on long trains that run nothing but strings of empties.
@cdavid8139
@cdavid8139 3 года назад
@@StarTard8 Isn't that about exactly what I said just using fewer words? There are definite air brake benefits. There is also the significant efficiency associated with moving some of your tractive effort to the middle or rear of the train. I think we're saying the same thing here.
@StarTard8

The number of cars and whether they are loaded and the number of locomotives up front should help estimate the need for DPUs.
@cdavid8139
@cdavid8139 3 года назад
Several factors are taken into consideration when determining the need. Total train weight is one. And of course availability of DPU equipped power is another. Other factors include the schedule and the priority of cars in the train. Crew availability factors in if you are considering running one or two trains. Is the train made up and ready to go?

It’s actually more environmentally friendly to transport oil/ethanol by rail rather than pipeline, fun fact. Pipelines such as the veto’d Keystone XL run aboveground and cut through swaths of wilderness that have to be entirely cleared for the pipeline to be able to be laid. The emissions from said pipeline are also greater than that of trains, and should a major pipeline go down you got yourself a real oil shortage on your hands; with trains, those problems are lessened (but still exist, since derailments can be catastrophic).

@rateyesmertz3785
@rateyesmertz3785 3 года назад
What DPUis all about is money and productivity.What is productivity ?? Simply productivity is more work for less money. Back in the 1800's they had a massive nationwide rail strike when the carriers doubled them mileage of a trip and cut the pay in half. They finally got around that with DPU now they have one man operating 2 or three trains for the wages of one trip. Railroad still operate under the philosophy of the public be damned ( especially UPRR) and the crews can be double damned.
@WideWorldofTrains
@WideWorldofTrains 3 года назад
I don't think it eliminates any employees, instead of having two engines up front with an engineer and a conductor you now have one engine up front sometimes two, and a DPU somewhere else on the train. Overall still two employees. Now if this has resulted in longer trains then yes it may have reduced some of the workforce, how much I'm not sure anyone knows the exact amount or percentage.

In the old days before CTC and Positive train control Souther Pacific would have 3 miles of goods going from East St Louis to LA.Traain wascalled the BSMFF ( Blue Streak Merchandise Fast Freight ). Instead of running 1 3 mile train they would run that train in 3 secti0ons --3 seperate trains.3 engineers, 3 conductors.Now they just couple the sections ns and make the 2 or 3 into one long train
@cdavid8139
@cdavid8139 3 года назад
@@WideWorldofTrains In general the ability to use DPU equipped locomotives also eliminates the need to run two trains. The benefits do include crew reduction in many but not all cases. On the unit tank train, in the past there would have been two crews involved in moving that train. And with many crews involved in that train as it moves to final destination, overall several crews would have been eliminated. That is not always the case. In the case of shorter trains that are equipped with DPU power crews were not displaced...the DPU is used instead of all the power on the head end
