The Soviet Union lasted a mere sixty-nine years (the Spitfire has been flying longer), but in that time produced some of the largest, fastest, toughest and most agile aircraft. Even now, 25 years after its collapse, almost all Russian and Ukrainian aircraft have their roots in the communist super state. Favouring clever robust design over high technology and refinement, the Soviet approach enabled the mass production of cheap machines. Many of these were outstanding, but some - for reasons of politics, bad luck or incompetence - were diabolical. Let’s pack beer and vobla, and take a walk through the rusting graveyard of the eleven worst Soviet aircraft.

To be fair, the MiG-23MS was, for the most part, an export version of the MiG-23. The Soviets weren't particularly concerned about giving their allies the best equipment possible. It's also true that other variants of the MiG-23 may not have been "great", but it also incorporated many innovative design elements that just hadn't matured yet. I would argue that it was a useful step in realizing many of these technologies.

It's easy to knock the Yak38, but the VTOL version of the F35 uses many of the same principles, such as the opening flap behind the canopy and the 2nd "Lift Engine" (aux driven fan in the case of the F35). So in some ways, you could say it was ahead of it's time...

Based on the results of the tests, the management of TsAGI submitted its conclusion to the People's Commissariat of the Aviation Industry, after reading which the new People's Commissar of the Aviation Industry A. I. Shakhurin ordered the Silvansky Design Bureau to disperse, the prototype I-220 to be transferred to the MAI as a teaching aid for the aircraft engineering faculty (so that future aircraft the engineers knew how not to design), and the chief designer himself was prosecuted for sabotage. He was convicted, but not for wasting tens of millions of rubles on an unsuccessful project, but for taking a state-owned ZiS-101 car from the factory, which he used for his own needs and overturned into a ditch. Subsequently he worked for S.P. Korolev and designed lifting and transport machines.

williestyle35 the Alaska Airlines Boeing 737-200 that was donated to the Alaska Aviation Museum in Anchorage is equipped with air stairs that deploy from the rear port side of the plane. This is because that craft (and several others) were modified with features to operate on unimproved gravel runways in larger villages here in Alaska where there is little to no airport services just a gravel strip. They had these stairs deployed during the aviation festival last month to board and tour the plane.

@Optical Clarity Actually I think that pooling all the research bureaus and labs under one single structure performs better as research spin-offs are available across whole industries. Well managed, it is the most efficient way to develop new systems once "off the shelves" ceases to be an imperative but true interoperability by eliminating non-productive redundancies while reinforcing positive ones. It has become clearer since 2010. My joke may be too obscure. Most of the best designers were interned at one time or another during this time period (1937-1941) and party card holders could not fit in their shoes.

Aww, you forgot the best part about the Tu-22: its maintenance crews were almost perpetually shitfaced. Because a majority of Tu-22s were stationed at bases within the Arctic Circle, the plane couldn't use standard hydraulic fluid as that would freeze in the subarctic temperatures. Instead, Soviet engineers had the BRILLIANT idea of using pure grain alcohol to provide hydraulic pressure. It's estimated that only 36% of the Tu-22 fleet would've ever been combat ready at a given time during it's service life, as so many mechanics were bleeding the bomber's hydraulics dry in relentless pursuit of getting CCCPlastered. Eventually, ICBM technology found its way east of the Iron Curtain, Soviet chemists invented a new antifreeze for hydraulic systems, and the Red Army Air Force cracked down on libations, sealing the fate of the Blotto Blinder.

The Mig-23's actually used by the Soviets was actually a very good aircraft. The ones that were sold to the Arabs were stripped down versions many lacking radar.

One big mistake: The SU-7 was never planned as a Ground-Attack-Aircraft, but as a competitor to the MiG-21. Later it got that Ground Attack Role.

I would have included one of the reasons the Tu-144 crashed at the Paris air show was, a French Mirage was flying above the Tu-144 during it's flight to photograph the planes canards. When both aircraft almost collided, the Tu-144 took evasive actions which led to the crash. Love the vid.
@kyleolson8977
@kyleolson8977 10 месяцев назад
I wouldn't have included this because it's a greatly exaggerated version of an excuse which even the Soviets gave up on because there was no evidence. They weren't even willing to go for "Almost collided" but something closer to "crew screwed up because the planes were close". But hey, don't let the evidence get in the way.

The SU-2 looks similar to the Boulton- Paul Defiant, another fighter burdened by a heavy unaerodynamic rear turret.
@Phoenix-xn3sf
@Phoenix-xn3sf 5 лет назад
It does, although SU-2's role was not a fighter but a ground attack aircraft. It's given title here, 'Russian Battle', refers to the Fairey Battle, a failed British light bomber of similar concept. Too lightly armed, weak and underpowered.

I often dislike top ten lists, but enjoyed this. Your delivery, though somewhat bland and monotone, was conversational and amusing. You weren't trying to be a fake DJ or FM announcer. So many other narrators have an obnoxious sing-song delivery or they sound like they're reading from a script. You just sounded like a normal person, which I appreciate. (One thing: Watch out for pronunciation of words like "panoply.") I gave this a "like" and will watch more of your stuff.

“Ejection sears eject downwards” Do you even B-52? The 222 may have been shitty but to call things out on any aircraft that were successful in other aircraft is stupid. Also might I note that: 1. The Russian export models of pretty much any military hardware was stripped down hand-me-downs. 2. Po-2’s in NK.... 3. Russian doctrine typically wasn’t about caring for the common military person, it’s about how many bodies and machines you can throw at an enemy. I’m not even finished the video and yet I’ve already come up with all this so far, goes to show how little research was done on some of these entries. Also I don’t want to have to listen to someone who sounds like he’s reading a lullaby to get me to fall asleep for the duration of my viewing experience.
