Hi everyone,
Welcome to a new Timelapse video.
This is a short video of the growth evolution of my 'Phoenix canariensis' in 11 years here in Belgium.
Also known as 'Canary date palm'.
Planted out at the beginning of 2009, so now (2020) already 11 years in open ground @ Belgium. (Zone 8b)
Enjoy the video and the enormous growth of this beautiful Palm.
Dutch 🇳🇱, German 🇩🇪, French 🇫🇷, Spanish 🇪🇦 and Italian 🇮🇹 subtitles are now also available for this video !😉👍
Also check my other Timelapse video's... • My Timelapse videos
Many greetings & fun from Belgium ! 😎
Dimi
Be sure to check out my other videos for even more exotic fun...
Tip: It's so fun to watch my videos on a 4K TV 😉👍

Wow - you planted one of these in Belgium - outdoors - and kept it alive! Now that is talent. I planted my Phoenix Canariensis (in Florida, USA) from a seed sprout and the trunk reached 13 feet after growing for 27 years and the crown was beautiful... then it died of a virus carried by Palm Leaf Hoppers that a hurricane blew north from Mexico. :( The virus is killing that variety all over the state now. Hopefully it will not migrate there. You garden looks amazing.

Thanks for the nice response Thea. It is my passion so I am willing to do something for it. Such palms are unique here in Belgium and that challenge is also the nice thing about it. Good winter protection is a must here, but you see what we get in return ... Sowing such a palm here and then reaching a trunk with a full crown of 4 meters at 27 years is something we can only dream of. Must have been great for you. Very sorry to hear that you lost it to that virus. I also hope that virus doesn't come here ... Hopefully you have a worthy replacement in the meantime. Many greetings from Belgium. :-)

Is the virus fusarium wilt? In San Diego we now have the South American palm weevil and it is killing every single one and it is so sad. These palms covered Southern California and now they are disappearing so fast it is unbelievable. The weevil doesn't kill most other palms but can kill the Bismarck palm and a few other rare ornamentals but it is mainly the phoenix canariensis. We do have fusarium wilt here but it doesn't seem to be a big problem.

@@araucariasightings3247i moved from Holland to Spain 4yrs ago. Also here in spain we have the weevil. Its a red coloured one. Many phoenix canariensis are dying. I also see just a view Who where taken care of and now have a New crown and still recovering. Its a big plague here these days. I dindt know about the bismarckia nobelis. I have a small one 😅. Had 2 canariensis 1 died this summer because of the weevil😢
@araucariasightings3247
@araucariasightings3247 10 месяцев назад
I heard you have the red palm weevil over in Spain. It's strange how the canariensis are so susceptible versus other kinds of palms. It is pretty rare that a Bismarck gets killed but it happens on rare occasion so you probably don't have too much to worry about.@@ricardop9220

Thanks downburst1. My canariensis is one of my first palms and is doing great indeed. At the moment it is blooming for the fourth year in a row. It's a female ... So if I understand correctly, you never protect yours ? Do you have a photo or a link where I can view yours ? It probably won't be long before you too can walk underneath it. :-) Greetings from Belgium

Dimi Hi Dimi. I never protected it, but grew in a pot until early May this year when I planted it out in the garden proper. I have two eight year old Trachycarpus in the garden and will add to them, similar to you. You’ve inspired me to do a video right now. thank you Dimi for this video, it's enjoyable to watch. i came from a town that has to many oases and date palms. and i would like to share some traditional tips that i wish it can help when transplanting the date palms. - first make sure to tied up the leave before putting the planet in the ground as well as covering the leave on sides but not in top. the reason because to protect the head/heart of the tree from weather changes and the new soil. this technique is to allow it to produce new leaves n set it in the new home. the head of the tree is the major point instead of the roots when it comes to the date palm. -second, it's not prefer to add too much soil on the trunk when transplanting the date palm. the roots needs to get position on ground first. as what happened in the first two years its slow growing. adding soil like mountain on the tree trunk is only if you want faster growing with tiny trunk. its prefer to make a basin on the ground because they need water the most. as its showing it become having big trunk now but it needs to grow higher. this might be sounds strange for some but do not water it everyday. only one time a week, why? let the roots find its food this will make it grow fast. second method, put soil around the trunk on the ground for faster growing, why? date tree prefer to many sources.

The reason we in colder and wetter climates put them on soil mounds is so that the palms are not sitting in water as it can get very wet at times which could cause root rot, but if its on a mound like this the water drains into the leveled ground or atleast the excess does.

Thanks ! Nice to read that I also inspire people. It's a challenge in cold countries like us, but that's the nice thing about this hobby. We therefore have something unique. :-) Good winter protection is very important. This Phoenix canariënsis can tolerate moderate frost in a dry state. -5 ° C to -6 ° C is approximately the limit. My Phoenix is packed every winter by building a box around it with polycarbonate plates of 32mm thick. (more layers inside) If it starts to freeze really well I close the box completely and if the temperature drops below -5 ° C, then I heat with a fan heater and keep the temperature in the protection around or just below freezing. Unfortunately I can not post photos here so for photos you better can take a look at my facebook -> facebook.com/Exotisch.Hofke.Dimi/ There you will find several winter photos per year and everyone can see it, even without a Facebook account ...😊 Good luck lulian Cristian Soare and greetings from Belgium.

How do you protect it from the cold and what will you do when it gets too big to cover? I want to do this some day, but I'm mostly worried about how big it will get
@Dimi.Exotic.Garden
@Dimi.Exotic.Garden 3 года назад
Hi Evaldas S, my Phoenix is packed every winter by building a box around it with polycarbonate plates of 32mm thick. (more layers inside) If it starts to freeze really well I close the box completely and if the temperature drops below -5 ° C, then I heat with a fan heater and keep the temperature in the protection around or just below freezing. Unfortunately I can not post photos here so for photos you better can take a look at my facebook -> facebook.com/Exotisch.Hofke.Dimi/ There you will find several winter photos per year ...😊 I don't really know yet what I'm going to do if it gets too big.🤔 I'll check that when the time comes. 🤷‍♂️ But I think it will take many more years, the trunk will not go up that quickly here in Belgium. So I can continue for many years ...👍

Quel serait votre conseil? Pas assez d’eau? Le sable? Merci d’avance
@Dimi.Exotic.Garden
@Dimi.Exotic.Garden Год назад
Merci. 👍

@@Dimi.Exotic.Garden I have a 30-year-old Phönix canariensis at home and it is already so big that it will make us at home. Do you think that it could be realized in the Czech Republic as well? I live in the south and there is a mild climate and relatively warm.
@Dimi.Exotic.Garden
@Dimi.Exotic.Garden 3 года назад
@@handmadeporhansl It does not need an extreme amount of heat to grow properly, so it should certainly work. A 20°C to 25°C is ideal. The most important thing is how are the winters there with you? During the winter it is very important to keep it dry and sheltered by building a cage around it. When it starts to freeze you can close the cage completely and heat it like I do if necessary. The temperature should certainly not fall below -5 ° C. Greetings from Belgium & good luck.

@@Dimi.Exotic.Garden Basically, I don't even know what kind of palm I have, it's probably lat. Phoenix dactylifera, because I grew it from the fruit of a woodpecker from a seed. Do you think that the same conditions are needed for this type of palm tree? I read somewhere that this species is the least demanding and grows practically everywhere, of course with sufficient protection in the winter months? I am not familiar with this, so I ask and I will be grateful for the answer. Greetings from the south of the Czech Republic.

@Dimi.Exotic.Garden
@Dimi.Exotic.Garden 2 месяца назад

@Dimi.Exotic.Garden
@Dimi.Exotic.Garden 2 года назад
Thanks Bernard. The idea behind planting on a hill is that the roots are a bit drier during the winters. It also gives the advantage that you can walk under the leaves a little earlier. 😉

Any reason you put it in such a big earth mound when you first planted it? I just planted mine straight into the ground (south-west France).
@Dimi.Exotic.Garden
@Dimi.Exotic.Garden Год назад
At that time I was still inexperienced and I got the tip from experts to place the Phoenix on a hill. So that the roots stay drier during the winter. I had done that a bit too exaggerated and during watering a lot of soil washed away from the hill because it was too steep of course. I didn't want to disturb the palm again by digging back out, so I just made the mound much bigger in diameter. This way the slope became much less steep and the palm could just stand and continue to grow. You can also see this in the video at 1:13

This is because it is mainly growing underground. The palm is settling for the first three years, then suddenly it goes much faster ... Our growing seasons are short and cool here, in the warm countries all that goes faster ...
