(1108) Challenge: Canadian Split Personality (Split Core Lock)

In this video I take on a Canadian hand-built split personality (split core) challenge lock designed by Al, specifically to defeat picking attempts.
Whipped videos highlight custom made locks sent to the LockLab as a challenge. They contain innovative modifications, unique security designs, and careful craftsmanship. Challenge lock design is difficult, to say the least, but many LockSporters excel in lock design and hand craftsmanship. Because there is such innovation among LockSporters, many manufacturers pay attention to the WHIPPED videos and incorporate the security techniques into their own locks.
There is only ONE RULE: The key must work. You are free to cover up the key to prevent me from seeing it until after I successfully pick (or fail to pick) the lock. I will make THREE 10-minute attempts (down from six 10-minute attempts in April 2018). If I fail to open it in that time, it will become a WHIPPED video. If you are interested in sending a challenge lock, please use this address:

I had a dream of a 17-pin, three-core lock with different types on each core. As awesome as it would be as a challenge lock... I think the door is the weak point by then.

That's actually an insanely impressive build... I expected the grub screws way down 3 and 4 when he took it apart and realized they're gone, I've seen that in magic style puzzle boxes, but I didn't expect it to lock the core in, very nice touch.

You had me yelling at my screen "Check for retaining screws in 3 & 4 Bill!" on this video. I suspected as much when I saw the (what appeared to be empty) 3 & 4 chambers. Great work otherwise on the picking job and to Al on the creative lock. Next time throw in some evil pinning and threaded core. XP

An interesting idea I had would be to have a lock like this, but each and every pin has a separate core that spins independently from each other. Then each alternating core would have the warding smoothed down so that you can't tension it with just a long tensioner.

i was wondering if anyone was going to make a split core lock for bill to try and pick for the longest time! i was thinking of how to make one, but couldnt think of a way to hold the two halves in place. it was around the 12:00 minute mark that i realized that he used pins 3 and 4 as set screws to hold the two halves together. AWESOME IDEA!

This split core concept would work wonderfully with a 7 pin lock as you can still have 2 to lock the cylinder but you still have 5 pins for security.

Cool lock! Was there anything requiring you to pick the first half other than the tension wrench? Looks like you could have used a bent wire, maybe a really long flag pick, and turned this into a two pin lock, as long as you could overcome the spring tension.

Why isn't there more locks out there with multiple cores? Seems like an excellent deterrent to amateur lock picking. I really hope this becomes a popular lock style someday.
