As soon as she mentioned opioids, I knew where this interview was going. Just because she was/is able to do it, not everyone can. I have done everything possible, even avoiding meds, but that wasn't a life. I can't wish or think away the pain..I've tried. We push ourselves every day. My medication is a very low dose and it barely makes me able to do chores. Sounds like a very "anti opioid" story to me.

I hear you. I'm on an opiate (hydromorphone 4mg every 4 to 6 hours) and am permitted up to 6 tablets a day. I personally only permit a max of 5 tablets per day but only average about 3 per day. Of course my neurologist (with blessing from pain management) has me on a benzo (klonopin) to help with managing adult onset tourettes (a condition that results from a faulty rewiring of the brain when under the stress of pain being under treated. And I'm also vaping nicotine (about an average of 35mg/mL) which helps with the dysautonomia I have (if it's controlled by the brainstem then it's likely fucked up), helps the opiate work better allowing me to take less than my max permitted and helps the benzo work better. However, my quality of life isn't perfect and my doctors know it. So, they have all agreed with not just me but also each other that it's in my best interest that I not be taken off of the meds they have me on unless the meds are replaced with a stronger option. Quite literally, I'm not able to be pulled off of my meds as otherwise I just end up screaming from the pain and God forbid I have a pain flare that led to a CIDP exacerbation which I had one in June. The paramedic that was in the back of the ambulance with me was left with her ears ringing and told the ER doctor "to give me something good and strong because she couldn't hear anything beyond a high pitched ringing in her ears and can't hear anything over it". So the ER doctor gave me fentanyl- something that I am NOT a fan of. Of course, when the pain started to flair again about 7 hours later, the er nurse asked what I wanted so I requested 2mg dilaudid iv and 1mg Ativan iv- and that's exactly what the doctor then agreed to give me when the nurse asked him. Of course, because of the CIDP exacerbation I was being admitted because the only treatment for an exacerbation is 5 doses of IVIG in 5 days. While I can independently infuse 1 dose of IVIG every 14 days (400mLs), I can't independently infuse 5 doses over 5 days in a row without being in the hospital with nursing as IVIG is a blood product.

I live with pain everyday that is so intense that I hate being around anyone...people just can't comprehend that your can be that bad. If only for a day you could be in my body ! I'm in pain, I don't need my head fixed and that's what Dr.s are doing. Prescribing drugs that mess with your head so bad that you can't even function properly...I don't want my head feeling like it's on a tilt o whirl but that's what these Dr.s are doing now for big pharma and lining their pockets. Not everyone gets addicted to drugs...there truly are people that NEED PAIN MEDICATION. Time Dr.s listen to the patient..I think it's time for me to write my book on CHRONIC PAIN from the patients point of view and not the Dr.s opinion

Not everyone's pain levels are the same! Not everyone's tolerance to pain is the same! Not everyone's response to treatments and or pain medications are the same! Chronic pain is serious and can only be treated on a case by case basis! There are no guides or trends to go by! Every individual suffering with chronic pain needs a custom tailored pain management plan suited just for that individual! There's way to many variables when treatment chronic pain!

I'm a 35 year old USMC machinegunner vet, and honestly, I've gone through absolute hell over the past 15 years. I can't even begin to describe. All I can say is it's CRIMINAL the way people are treated for daring to ask for help with their suffering. I have come close to suicide SO many times, just to make it stop. I can't do that, as I have a wife and daughter. I'm happy for those who can find a way through constant suffering; but it very much is a different hell for everyone.

@@tripod13mc you may want to seek out a neurologist to find out about whether or not you may have developed central pain syndrome (essentially a faulty rewiring of the brain that leads to more pain perception) along with two other pain conditions- hyperalgesia (increased perceived pain from painful stimulus) and allodynia (pain from stimulus that shouldn't cause pain). The three conditions combined can certainly question yourself on staying alive with a poor quality of life. Also, if you experience tics in line with tourettes, then you may want to seek out whether you have developed Adult Onset Tourettes. This is basically yet another condition that develops as a result of faulty rewiring of the brain when it is under the stress of under treated pain. Source- I've got the lovely combination as a result of complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) being under treated.

@@DrAndreaFurlan my doctor seems to want her patients off ALL pain meds! I went to physical therapy and the pain in my neck and upper back and shoulders got worse. I canceled my PT appointments and called my doctor to get pain shot in my neck. She had given me the CHOICE to have either the shots or PT, and I thought PT first. Then, when the PT made me hurt even MORE, I called her and said I would rather be referred for the shots. And she said NO! That I should go back and finish PT but tell them “not to do whatever they did that made it hurt worse “!!!! What the heck??? SHE gave ME the choice for the shots in the first place!!!

I also have PTSD and I’m on Alprazolam. So, giving up opioids ( tapering off now), is a good idea FOR ME. I’m off all oral opioids and on the lowest dose of fentanyl. And will be off that soon. So my doctor is causing more anxiety by telling me to get the physical therapy that causes even more pain. I see my psychologist and regular doctor next week and will be discussing all of this.

Thank you for sharing your story. Keep enjoying life ☺️ I live with chronic pain too for a decade now from terrible auto accident. The cold gets me 🥶 I'm retired too at 38. I use to do nursing, social work. Now I am a realestate investor work alone. I come to accept it's okay not having people in my life. Pain sucks. I found having discipline with healthy lifestyle, eliminating stress, and finding peace and joy thru god and Love letting go of stressors that can't be fixed. I was left with CRPS TYPE 2 mixed with other chronic nerve issues because I fractured my pelvis.. CRPS is a blind disease to the medical community. Many years ago I came to a self discovery too. I suffered terrible pain from letting pain doctors experiment with injections and a failed spinal cord stimulator after years of surgies and rehabilitation. I'm lucky 🤞 I have alot of pain that my body understands I just nolonger physically feel it because of the cannabis effectiveness to numb pain. 7 years ago I choose to start taking cannibis after moving to Hawaii. I was living in Atlanta Ga and the doctor sucked. I had to fire them. I wanted to stick to natural medicines after being treated like a druggie. I never took pain medicine until the doctors spread my disease all over my body. . I have a home in Michigan so cannabis is completely legal here. I buy my medicine at the dispensary. Cheaper than prescription these days. I started off taking 5mg thc gummies. Then went up dosage over the years. I eat gummies throughout the day. I have been on the cannibis for so long now I don't get to much of the high effects. Very thankful I am on it. Definitely helps. I take almost a 100mg a day now. Sometimes more on a bad day. Thru out the day I eat them. I live a pretty active life with this medicine. I can bike 10 miles, I can still hike a 7 mile trail. For me it lets my body have a break. My body would be on fire otherwise. Numbs the body basically pretty good. It's called body high. I hate to see people suffer so I like to recommend as a option to treat chronic conditions.

Gratefully, I am under the care of a pain management provider who understands that writing for opiates (only one) to help keep the pain from CRPS, central pain syndrome along with hyperalgesia and allodynia at a tolerable level. He understands that the vast majority of the pain I have is mediated by my brain and spinal cord. Of course I'm even more grateful that pain management has accepted and granted permission to my neurologist to have me on a benzo for Adult Onset Tourettes which is actually a form of Tourettes caused by a faulty rewiring of the brain when under stress of under treated pain of which is a similar way of how central pain syndrome develops in response to under treated pain. I just wish that all doctors would understand that irreversible changes to the brain that leads to a poorer quality of life when pain is under treated. However, the government certainly doesn't care so why would they allow doctors to write for the needed amount of medications to adequately treat the patients pain?

@@CapeCodBelle hi there. I took opioids for 15 years and what helped me get off of them was medical cannabis. I strictly follow a doctor’s advice about how to take it. I don’t like the “buzz” so I try and take only what is necessary. CBD oil doesn’t help me, it has to be THC oil. Literature suggests this too to manage nerve pain. It has radically changed my life! Opioids made me angry, indifferent and with very little hope of getting back a somewhat better life. Well, needless to say that THC oil gave me more time with my kids and wife, i laugh and talk more (these are the positive side effects of marijuana), and when my pain increases during the day, i can tell myself that at least I will get relief later in the evening (when I take the oil), an option which I didn’t have with the opioids. @@DrAndreaFurlan thank you but there isn't one . I've got fibromyalgia I have bulging discs in my lower spine n nerve damage also nerve damage cervical spondylitis from a broken neck . You have to just get on with it or depression gets a grip . I dont like taking painkillers as they dont work n can become addictive. I've lived with daily pain for years n years .

Hi Dr. Furlan, It would help if you let the person being interviewed talked and just listen. Every time she was about to give us more of her story about specific issues you would cut her off. I appreciate your content but it would help your audience tremendously if you let the person talk and not sound fake when you are agreeing. Sorry for any negative criticism it's just that i was really into hearing her talked and it got awkward to watch due to the interruptions.

I am sorry pain meds made pain worse for this patient, but this story of opioid hyperalgesia is a myth, and I imagine she is popular at this conference because she can share her story which, btw, is not the norm. Most pain patients get relief from their meds and suffer horribly without their pain meds, I lost a friend named Danny and his beautiful wife Gretchen last November because his doctor was raided for the DEA for no and he was left in torture unable to find a doctor to help him due to the excruciatingly painful nature of his brain injury. I will not stop talking about Danny until this war on pain patients in the US and Canada ends. We are losing pain patients because they can no longer get prescriptions for their life saving pain medications and I’m sorry but this woman’s story is the exact opposite of what is happening to pain patients these days; I can think of so many that would love the privilege of having their pain meds again and are barely surviving without them. I was force tapered two years ago for no reason, except for our government waged a war again pain patients in the US and my pain doctor was in its cross hairs so he started force tapering his patients. I was fortunate and was able to get pain meds again, but so many are not so lucky. My story is the opposite of this woman’s and I had to accept that opioid pain meds were the only way I could would have quality of life again. I can’t use my hands or arms without excruciating nerve pain; think of how often you use your hands then you get an idea of how much pain I was enduring. I tried everything to avoid taking pain meds including traveling to California for a risky and excruciatingly painful surgery in 2018 that did not help my nerve compression. I also tried many types of physical therapies, prescription meds, injections, alternative therapies including chiropractic and acupuncture…nothing helped, in fact, physical therapy and chiropractic care made things worse for my pain. The minute I got a prescription for pain meds in 2018, was when I realized our government has stigmatized pain patients as drug addicts and my life is difficult in another way, but at least I have quality of life. It is a myth that doctors are handing out pain meds “like candy,” it’s very much the opposite these days; prescribing is the lowest in the US since 1993 and deaths from illicit fentanyl are the highest in history, that should tell us we need to do a course correction and start treating pain compassionately again.

Hi Sheryl, few patients with chronic pain get pain relief with opioids. Most, it just masks the pain and give them some temporary relief (which can be helpful), but if the person can live well without opioids, then it is okay. We need to give a chance to taper opioids for those patients who are motivated.

To me it Didn't sound like she had over come her pain. Just her misuse of drugs that was a added pain. Chronic pain has got a end. You can live with it or treat it. Mind can go over it at times and not others.

Everyone is different. She doesn’t look like chronic pain. If she had chronic pain she wouldn’t be able to sit that long without sweating and moving around. You should interview a real chronic person.

Hi M Macantosh. Your point of view is very narrow. Don't judge other people if you cannot achieve what they achieved. I hope the video will show that it is possible to live well with chronic pain. Yes, having pain everyday is very hard, but there are many things that can be used to provide a good qualilty of life.

Wish she was a paraplegic with chronic pain. 12 years chronic pain paraplegic neuropathy and I'm only 32. Only take gabapentin which really does nothing. My Docs only want to give me fentanyl, which only knocks me out, pain is still horrible once I wake up. I'm trying to find a better way to live life with the pain.

Kalidiva, this is a very disrespectful comment. Wishing someone else bad is only brining bad energy to yourself. I hope you find relief for your pain and suffering, But wishing another human being to become paraplegic is not the answer. Please edit this comment or delete it. I do not tolerate this type of behaviour in my channel.

Try making your own pain killers with wild lettuce also this is only good for this woman, everyone is different to compare her pain with others is not only ignorant the doctor should lose her license for even suggesting it, the doctors could also do other test that they are told by the FDA not to offer that could tell a person that they could fix their problems easily, so they expect others to sit in pain and want us to find other ways to deal with , look at the fentanyl problem not one person is doing anything about it , if she was on 3 opioids and Ritalin then her doctors should be sued and put in jail, so let's stop opioids but leave the cartel alone this video is a joke.
