116 foot salt river cliff jump

If you notice at about half way through the video I have to hang onto a dead bush and lean out over the edge to view the hole I was jumping into. Also you should notice that when I jump I have to jump about 15 feet out away from the cliff to avoid striking the rocks. My entry was poor due to how much forward force I needed to clear that ledge. The officer I spoke with later on had told me that that the jumpers hitting that ledge and other tubers is the biggest cause of death. I also waited for everyone to clear before I jumped so as not to risk anyone being injured

A number of years ago in this exact spot I thought I was going to witness my first fatality. Very drunk guy, top of cliff showing off. Took off his shorts and while waving them around his head slipped and fell. Landed completely horizontal on his back. The only thing that saved him was that 2 guys in kayaks were there in just a few seconds and dove under and found him.Guy was out cold and would have drowned otherwise. He survived thanks to these 2 guys.

They blew this cliff apart many years ago. There used to be a tower and a jump that was right at 100 feet high. The tower was about 80 feet. The water there is amazingly deep from serious erosion. I jumped from both and really couldn't tell any difference. This was back in like 1969 or 1970. My youngest brother was about 12 and he even jumped. We all spotted him from below. It was a gas back then. Less people and no cops. No buses or parking lots or anything but the desert and the river. I miss Arizona from my youth. You were truly free. Does anyone remember the Flumes out near Lake Pleasant?

Taking the video into Sony Vegas Pro, I found that his air time was 2.33 seconds. Plugging that into the freefall equation, I get 87.28 feet. So yeah it is shorter than what he said, but that's still pretty good.

Hell yeah Salt River! The last time i cliff jumped I had my left shoulder ripped out of socket with the only way out of the water was to climb up the side of a mountain, followed by a 2 hour ride of agony to get to an ER to have it set back in place. I got much respect for anyone who dares to jump off of these insane cliffs.

@TheDarThaum

Yes it does, unless you have been doing stuff like this your whole life. I'm from Maui in Hawaii and there are a TON of jumps to find here. Yes I would be nervous to jump but what motivates me to jump is this sentence: "don't think, just do." This saying is very true. Sometimes people overthink on something and get themselves scared. Just do it.
@spankthewan
@spankthewan 10 лет назад
TheDarThaum I have to say it; YOU'RE AN IDIOT! This is a 100+ foot jump; The water can easily kill you from this height. There's a reason your brain tells you not to do it. It's a survival instinct that is best not to ignore.

@oceanceaser44
@oceanceaser44 10 лет назад
Just to end the arguements over height: The simple kinematics equation is d=(1/2)(9.81)(t^2)=height in meters. 3.28 feet per meter. I got 2.35 seconds which gives 89 feet, but it is hard to tell exactly how long the fall was (put whatever you get in for "t"). This is all before air resistance which shouldn't take away more than a foot or two. I'm a undergrad physics student (though any high school physics student knows this simple equation)
@SouthernCodester91
@SouthernCodester91 3 месяца назад
That's a lot higher than 89 feet, especially if you have seen it in person. Super sketchy because of the distance you have to clear.

Just to set this straight, the world record for high dive is a 50 meter dive. Thats approx 150 feet, and that was with several reverse rotations. You can definitely survive 116 feet, but it will be extremely painful, and landing wrong will kill you.

Actually, weight is a factor in determining an object's terminal velocity. Terminal velocity is reached when the net force on a falling object is zero (dv/dt = 0), which occurs when the force of drag on the object from the fluid is equal in magnitude and opposite in direction to the object's weight. Pick up a book on fluid mechanics, or if the math is too difficult for you, then read the Wikipedia article on terminal velocity.

Well gravity makes you accelerate at 9.81m/s. Assuming he takes about 2.5 seconds to hit the water this means he jumped from a height of about 24.5m which comes out at 80.4 feet. He does mention in the description he has to jump AWAY from the edge which means he puts forward force and probably a little bit of upward force as you can see by the way he jumps off. So actually sorry youre wrong. Him pushing off doesnt increase his speed. Dont call people retarded when youre not totally right either.
@bukmomen

That jump is not a hundred feet. I go to a place in Missouri called The Off-sets. They have a jump the same height, and its not taller then 42 feet. That's at the end of summer. That cliff is maybe 55 feet. Ive climbed a 125 foot wind turbine tower. Way fucking taller then that. Just saying.... still a good jump though.
