Leland is the only person in the world that makes me smile through this pandemic. Just hearing about your day and with a bit of music is the best thing
From the time that I was 9 or 10, when I would read the jackets and liner notes of my albums, and those of my older siblings, Leland's name has been there (him, Jerry Marotta, Skunk Baxter, and a few others). It is incredible to get the stories behind the music.
T H A N K Y O U !!!!!! You`re TH E BEST !!!!! I LOVE THIS :-) Beyond humbled that you played this for me & of course for such amazing compliments about my band - you`re far too kind ....It`s such a killer song & you are a KILLER PLAYER !!!!! What a work-out ..... You`re a LEGEND ....... :-) :-) :-)
I took a look at your uploads..nice from list..just subscribed to your channel although my times limited many days🚛🌄🌉🌅🌇 I do have you in there with my subs now.. so I look forward to checking out some of your stuff from down under😎😎🎸🎸👍
Please keep up telling the "behind the scenes" stories. They're amazing to hear. Listening to Mr. Collins and Genesis while growing up in the late 70's and the 80's, I'm firmly convinced that's why I chose to learn percussion (snare drums) when I was in grade school and junior high. Mr. Collins's drumming is what made me say: "I wanna learn*that*!" It was challenging and tons of fun to learn. Thanks for this video!
Breaks my heart to hear that you may never play with Phil again... I understand it’s getting more and more difficult for Phil due to his health, I hope by some chance that you can do one more tour or record one more record together... god bless you both... LEGENDS 🥂👍🏻🥂
Yes, he overworked himself massively with the success of Genesis, his solo career and his producing work (No One Is To Blame from Howard Jones being one), even more so being a drummer, playing an instrument that needs a lot of physical strength to do so for any length of time. Plus he never had any time really when he wasn't popular and had the time to rest. As for his drumming ability he can still play the intro to Mama 😄 I just hope that he doesn't do a Keith Emerson as that would be sad.
It may suck getting old but we all get to 'do it'. I wish things were different, but..... We are blessed he chose to give us his life, his soul. As Leland says 'until we can be cloned' we have to do what we can do. Phil Collins must ache that the drums can not be his refuge. Smell the roses while you can and don't get COVID which can take that away too. Peace.
You're "rambling" is perfect. Please don't attempt to change any of it. The top of your head style of speaking, and great name dropping, affords me the luxury of discovering or re-acquainting myself to so much talent and beautiful music. I know that you are a vegetarian, but I like my steak cooked RARE. ..Just like......YOU are.
Chester Thompson , I am always mesmerized watching him and Phil go at it with the drums- Mr Sklar my days are always great when I get a chance at watching your channel and to listen at your wonderful stories . When I attended a few of genesis and Collins concerts . Phil was always making jokes on stage ,,
Phil Collins my idol and drum teacher for life !!! we all blessed for having him in that period time of our life thank you Leland for doing that and gave so much respect for Phil !!!!
One of my favorite Phil Collins songs, and I have to say I love the Genesis version as well. He really offers a radically different interpretation with his own band. You killed it, Lee! Lovely!
Behind the Lines is a favourite of mine. I love both the Genesis and solo versions. It’s amazing how one song can be so good in two totally different arrangements. I love both Layla versions too.
Hi Lee, I was at that Reunion Arena concert in Dallas with my girlfriend (now wife since 1991). This was a great memory of it. We didn’t know your name at the time, so we invented the nickname “Father Time” because of your beard. I showed her one of your videos recently, and she immediately said “ah, it’s Father Time!” Love the stories and tunes. Thank you.
Watching No Ticket Required on HBO in the mid 80's made me the Phil Collins, Genesis, and Peter Gabriel fan I am today. I loved it then, and I love it watching with my kids today. The great part is that they love it too!
i love judith & you not only because you are outstanding musicians but also because you are two wonderful human beings. the two of you are so humble and so empathic on and behind stage. a very rare gift. you take care.
I have been a huge Phil Collins/ Genesis fan, since 1980. I saw you Lee on the no jacket required tour 1985, at the Manchester Apollo Uk brilliant gig😀👍
First, what a sincere, heartfelt thing to say to Phil. Thinking that you may never play together again really puts a lot of shit into perspective. Bittersweet. Second, learning this version of the tune years ago from the live album completely kicked my ass. Thankyou!
Behind the line was originally on the Genesis album Duke, Phil rearranged it for No Jacket Required, making it very different, but still a great version of the song. Phil Collins has often said his least favourite solo album was No Jacket Required and due to personal circumstances at the time barely remembers making the album. This saddens me as I love that album, so does millions of fans who bought the album and cherish it. Lee said a few videos ago he often likes outsider tracks on albums, on this album I really like I don't wanna know. So powerful and tight and has real power.
I think Phil's remake of the song was for Face Value, rather than No Jacket... But I've always loved the song since seeing an old VHS video cassette copy of Phil at Perkins Palace from 1982 or 1983, around the release of Hello, I Must Be Going. Such a great live recording. Check it out..!
@@Shelsight Not many fans actually know that is the only song to appear on a band album and a Phil solo album - both in 1980. I actually prefer Phil's version better. It may be my favorite solo track he has. I also believe Phil said; Hello, I Must be Going as his least favorite. Then again, I cites his "weakest" as his favorites.
@@billyshears4216 couldn't agree more. Re both his remake of Behind The Lines being better than the Duke original, and also Hello I Must Be Going as my favourite Phil solo album... I Cannot Believe It's True, It Dont Matter to Me, two beautiful ballads incl. Dont Let Him Steal... and another epic instrumental - The West Side... Plus the 2 angry & 2 anguished other tracks. Not a single "filler" song on the album. Love it :)
@@Shelsight We are totally in sync. To be honest, the only ballads or slower songs I can still listen to are on Face Value and Hello. I love “Thru these Walls”.
'Behind the Lines' makes me cry nearly every time. Some of the best lyrics ever written and so full of pathos. I can not imagine how wonderful it would be to be part of Phil's life. Your gems give us hope and joy. (what a great bass line, is it any wonder you loved playing with Phil....he brought all that great musicality from Genesis)
Leland it’s great to hear you walk through your work. I’m a total geek. I grew up listening to great stuff thanks to my mom an pop Thanks for what your doing I’m a fan. Keep it going brother.John Cardinali 74 years and stating to feel it.
Good morning from a chipper (63 degrees!) North Florida! As always, I’m a couple mins in, and you’ve already made me LOL (rotator cuff), smile (computer wizardry) and stretch (find more Judith Owen!) ~ and I just came here to check out the bass on Phil’s version of BTLs…!! 💓 you Leland, and now my husband loves you (AND The Immediate Family!) Please stay healthy, keep spreading the (get vaccinated!) message and the positive vibes, and keep sharing your many gifts and huge heart with us! We need you! Now, about that bass line…😎
That was one rockin' performance!! It's really a dream come true to have musicians likeLee Sklar and The Immediate Family entertain me in such a personal way. There are so many other musicians doing the very same. Thanks guys.
Thanks for another great video. I have always had the greatest respect for your work over the years and these videos you do make me respect you even more. Thank you sincerely for sharing your stories, songs, and positivism. Your are the bass player for the soundtrack of the World for the last 50 years.
Awesome what a song . And that band was amazing the horn section played with earth wind and fire yeah? . And ya right Bec is a great musician great person to. Love from Australia.
It is a great song. I’m guessing it’s mainly a Tony Banks composition, with some Mike Rutherford and Phil Collins thrown in. Trivia: Phil got the idea to transform it into a funk style when hearing it being played back at double speed on a tape machine while in the studio working on Duke. It was the first Genesis songs he covered on one of his own albums.
Yes.. Behind the Lines is a handful - Especially Phil's solo funked up-tempo compared to the Genesis version. Chester just rips through it.. Played really great Lee! - Have a relaxing evening and enjoy the studio tomorrow..
Great Video and history… was looking for fun good obscure songs tonight and was tracking through Face Value on Apple Music.. hadn’t listened to this song in years. I play bass and hadn’t tried this ever. I picked up the intro riff and thought I’d check RU-vid to see how people play the rest… and then I arrived at this video! To learn from the originator of the groove is a great blessing. Thanks for sharing this and your experiences.
Well that’s a busy baseline!! Wow. Kind of ironic you having Santa with you on the day I had to release a bird from the log burner, as it had fallen down the flue!!! Just another great video Leland, you really do make our days 👊🏼
I first saw you on the 85 tour in Melbourne & I knew from your playing it was you who played on Face Value ,,, what a treat you were !! Especially on Hand in Hand & I missed again ; I still remember clearly those songs ,,, & if leaving me is easy ,,, these were & still are favourites for me ,,,, a desert island album for me !! Thanks so much for the music ,, Cheers brun
It so cool - the look on your face while you're playing - you're so into the moments of playing, deep into it. Every video I've seen so far, even the ones that you obviously don't feel like you nailed it, there are those moments when you're into it and living it. Very inspiring :)
You don´t realize when you talk about amazing people you have met, that the rest of of us feel exactly the same when you share videos with us. We are enjoying sharing time with our hero. Thank you so much for all you have done, and what you are doing.
Thank You Lee !!!! When I started following you on RU-vid, I was hoping that you would play "Behind The Lines". I am a fellow bassist, and I always remembered this song. A while back, I decided that I would attempt to learn it. After much work, I was able to get through it fairly well. It gave me a greater appreciation of the inspiration you have been to my bass playing. "Your Smiling Face" is another one that I have worked on. Thank you for sharing your talent and insights with us - it has really been great getting to know you !!
Mike Rutherford created a lot of amazing bass lines (one of the most under appreciated bassists). As far as I recall this is one of the simpler ones since much of it was originally played on pedals.
Hey Lee, you are absolutely right about Phil. I met him in Pittsburgh during the Duke tour and he was just a great person to be around! I know this is a year old but I had to say this! He is also one of the very best drummers ever! Take care Lee and thanks for the cool videos!
Your comment of different day, different take on a song brought back a good memory. We had a guitar/pedal steel player for over twenty years who played in the moment. The bandleader would always introduce him as “Lit’ning Fingers”, because they never struck twice in the same place!
thank you for another wonderful video..I'm glad you bring up Phil so much. I saw you live at the 'Not Dead Yet' tour (took my mum - she is a big fan but never got to see a live show) and that's when I understood how unique and amazing is that band and that man. Thank you!
I get so caught up in the stories that I momentarily forget how good you are, and then the riffing starts. Thank you for both Lee, stay healthy and enjoy the studio.
I'm 52, so I remember well. Phil had a lot of air-time on a lot of hits. Two other bands I can think of that had continuous hits on the radio; Fleetwood Mac and Tom Petty. I've seen you in the back round all my life, its great to hear these stories of Bands I grew-up with. Your an awesome gentleman Lee.
Damn, Lee. You really are one smokin’, badass, mutha’ effin’ bass player!!!! Watching you is just as much of a thrill as hearing ya throw down those deadly digs!!! When you kick into performance mode I just love, how with precision, you put every cell of your being into every single note you play. I can’t stop smiling. Thank you!!
