A fig tree would take over that greenhouse, they grow fast and wide. Find a nice sunny spot outside for the fig tree and just wrap it in the winter. This is what we do in the cooler parts of the US and even Canada and they do just fine
Yes 😊we have a fig tree that I left in a large pot for 10 years 😂…it’s now planted on a bank and we get very cold weather in the Welsh mountains….it lived even when left pot bound ❤
One of the many joys of this channel is learning new things in the Comments... I had no idea that fig trees could be grown outside with a little protection. 😁
@gregfarz78 I planted a fig tree a few feet away from the greenhouse (outside) and the roots grew under the greenhouse frame and took over the composted beds on the inside. Within two years I had to cut it down. They do grow fast and can get pretty invasive if planted to close to structures, etc. Needless to say I had to start over with the beds in the greenhouse.
Thank you for what you do. Coming here to watch your videos is like going to church,it soothes my soul. Even the people in the comments are best of people and a joy to read.
Advice. Plant the fig tree now in a sheltered but sunny place. At the end of October, wrap the whole tree with straw and plastic. It will take 4-5 winters wrapping, then it will be ok.
I was gonna suggest planting it in a oversized container as to have the option of moving it because figs can grow wide not only tall and I think it will overtake the greenhouse. The roots are prolific you’ll be surprised on how much you will need to cut back.😊
@@Theselfiechick That's true. I have figs on the mountain land, they grow as a bush at the beginning, but after 4-5 years, you choose one strong to create a tree, the rest chop in early spring or in October. His fig is already created as a tree, so he needs to choose a place outside, definitely not inside the greenhouse, planted in a deeper hole and water it regularly. It's important the first 4-5 winters to protect the tree from freezing. Where I live we have a cold below -15 C and I have two different fig trees surviving very well. Just made jam and compot (figs in syrup)
Ficus Carica ‘Bornholm’, frost hardy fig, after the first couple of winters. You could also try Poncirus Trifoliata, one of the most frost hardy citrus plants
I wondered why they would build there as it was a dangerous location on a peninsula with cliffs for children and animals and possibly others to fall from.
I live in the woods and put out seed on my sills for the wild birds. When I watch Martijn’s videos, his birdsong noises often drive unexpected birds to my sill in curiosity; it’s a cool and strange phenomenon, thanks for this!
Martijn. Thank you for faithfully, every Sunday morning, taking us with you on your journey of vision and discovery in the Italian/French Alps. Truly appreciate your mentoring, planned or unplanned, example. Learning from you! Inspiring. You keep it real. A gift of honor.
A random reminder of how much effort truly goes into making these magnificent videos. Take as an example the very last shot with Martijn riding his bike up the path: It's not just "Martijn filmed this nicely". It's "Martijn rides his bike up the path, always with a mind for an interesting shot. Martijn identifies a potentially interesting scene. Martijn gets off of his bike and sets up his drone. Martijn flies the drone up and finds a good framing for the shot. Martijn sets the drone to film, then rides his bike through the scene. Martijn stops the bike and flies the drone back down. Martijn packs up the drone and continues on his way. Always with a mind for the next interesting shot". Repeat this process several times per day. Sometimes with a drone, sometimes with a camera stand. Not to talk about him not being happy with the first take and retaking it potentially multiple times, e.g. riding the bike back down out of frame and up the path again. Then put on top of this all the effort of sifting through the large amounts of usable shots, identifying just the best sequences that make for great storytelling and look great. Possibly leaving out some shots he put a lot of effort into filming, because they don't fit the overarching tone and narrative of the current video. Now add the whole topic of audio. Drones are loud and their audio recording can't be used as is. So at least every drone sequence needs to get a new meditative audio track picked and laid under it. This is all just a very rough overview of what it take to produce these videos. Even when you have a team of people dedicated to one single aspect of videomaking, that's a big effort. Reducing every role into one person is just so much more impressive.
Watching great old movies at dinner time every night is a good practice for developing knowledge about framing shots, editing, and cinema in general. And, of course, going out on a hot new bike to explore more terrain helps prick the imagination for further storytelling. And it all obviously pays off, thanks to RU-vid.
TUTTO FANTASTICO
A bit surprised you didn't consider putting the apple trees near the chicken coup as when the trees mature they could affect the amount of light for the greenhouse; not to mention that chicken love rotting apples - friends of mine used to let their chicken flock free range under their orchard. Just a thought from another gardener who is always concerned about the amount of light in a limited environment. As always an enlightening, relaxing, and welcomed episode.
From watching the property during different hours of the day, it seems like the best place to put a greenhouse would be the bottom part of the meadow. Around where the solar panels are or lower. With the long winters it would probably produce sooner than up next to the shadow of the high trees. But maybe it will still be alright. Its looking great though!
I was afraid to comment on the suggestion of getting an electric bike when you had your car repaired and used your bike to get back up the mountain. Thought it might be insulting to a degree considering your general approach to life. So was pleasantly surprised that you bought the new bike. Cheers.
119 episodes - everyone a joy. Some breathtaking overhead photography. The greenhouse is beautiful. Hello to Ollie. Thank you, Marijn. You brighten our days.
Also how about ventilation, those windows are fixed in place( I see no handles), and no thermal mass storage. So the heat of the day will quickly be gone in the night. Some Bricks or Barrels with water will do the trick cost effective. Passive Heating would have been nice, but I guess that is just much digging or splitting rocks in that location.
I've also been wondering about this. The greenhouse seems positioned for shade in the morning, and adding trees that might block even more sunlight in the afternoon. I thought at first he was going to plant shade lovers, but tomatoes are sunlovers. I wonder if there's an optical illusion and the trees are farther from the greenhouse than they look on camera? That's the only explanation I can think of.
As you tend to the care of your shoes, you are fortunate to always have nature's music to listen to. No interruptions, no commercials, just pure birdsong. How lovely...
If you plant the trees next to the greenhouse, won’t they shade it as they grow? Why not make an orchard of your fruit trees of apple, plum, pear, cherry, plus walnut? Plus it is growing warmer and you might grow fruits and nuts that grow in a warmer zone. My zone has been elevated from a zone 5 to zone 6. Peach trees produce fairly quickly. It is exciting to watch your progress. I love planting trees and I have great affection for chickens. All animals really. Some trees I planted for turkeys. Once I chased a fox out of my peach tree. I wanted to wait one more day before harvesting and went to bed that night full of expectation. The next morning all but one peach had been eaten. The foxes, the deer, the raccoons and whatever else had eaten all. They must have had a big party with the fox in the tree throwing peaches down for the others as there were peach pits scattered over a large area.
Rabbits and deer will eat young fruit trees if not protected. Nothing like finding your trees ringed by rabbits. They love the young tender bark at the base.A wire case 2 feet up will do for the first 5 years. After that the trees have a crusty bark protecting them from rabbits. The deer will still eat your leaves if not fenced. Sorry, pain in the butt, I know. I fenced the ares with 8 foot field fence.
Fruit Trees are too close to the green house- there will be too much shadow fot plants when they will grow up- Im so sorry but lets imagine them after few years- There is so mach space anywhere else on Yours wanderfull property. I admire any thing are You doing there- but green house just needs the sun :)) Thanks for sharing this journey with us.
Martijn, after the 2 EPIC bike trips you completed and everything you are building, you've earned the right to cruise in comfort as you explore and share video of your beautiful region. Can't wait to see more of everything you do! Enjoy interacting with your guests, too. It would be interesting to hear their perspectives, too.
It is 34degC here on Sunday afternoon in sunny Austria. I heard the rain on your greenhouse roof and called my husband to bring in my laundry drying outside on the rack!! I had a good laugh, thank you!!
Seeing you posted today removed a weight from my brain. Today italian news are dedicated to the disasters that hit the valleys from just north of you up to Switzerland; towns around mine were heavily hit. I hope you are well.
Absolutely Wonderful to see another Episode Martijn, Fantastic Aerial views of your astonishing property 💜👏🏽👏🏽 Great accomplishment on the green house, and allowing the chickens more free range for protection. The Electric Bike is truly Amazing, will be Wonderful to cycle higher in the Mountains. Thank You again Martijn, Always plan my Sundays to be able to watch the latest on You, looking forward to #120, Wow - Time flies, I have watched Your series since #2... Danke 👏🏽👏🏽
Our weekly Martijn fix satisfies so beautifully! There are moments in every episode where the light plays a visual symphony with the mists and the mountains that are truly breath-taking! The workshop and its terrace are going to transform how the homestead functions. I am so looking forward to the plans and their implementation! Greetings from Cajun country, south Louisiana!
Always a relaxing Sunday morning…on vacation in the northern Wisconsin woods, coffee in hand, curled up with a blanket. Thank you, Martijn, for letting us all live vicariously through you. It’s such a gift. 🌲🛶🌳🌲🌲
I also started vacation, but today and I saved this episode for my first summer holiday day. Italian Alps is such a pleasant way to start the vacation. Have a nice vacation there. This is very rainy week here in Finland but next week seems to be perfect for gardening. 😊 Few projects are waiting.
I dont know what roof you intend to put on your greenhouse but i assume glass or plexiglass. Once your apples start to drop & they will you need to consider breakages or cracking. Place your fruit trees near where your chickens can have access to fallen fruit as suggested by another subscriber & get plenty of sunlight. Protect the tender trunks.
You're a Tough guy, working out there in the Rain, Heat, snow, You've got an EXCELLENT work ethic, it reminds me of my Dad growing up, he was a hard working farmer, He worked in the City, to support his farming Habit, most farmers have to do that, I Absolutely loved the drone shots, of those old stone building, Your Country is so Beautiful, and the shots of the orange Lillies, such a Lovely addition, your cinamatic eye, is excellent, you show such pleasure to eyes, and mind, I love how dominant the sound of the Birds are, and the distant wind and water,
Why the irrigation unit outside? Wouldnt it be better inside? Because of frost. You have always to think about frost and demontage. Inside with one or two (Friedhofkerze) candles would stay frostless. Just thinking… Love your Videos since years. Cheers from Germany.
Factor that your apple trees may grow 15 to 25 ft in dia. if they survive the winter and snow. May want to create a new orchard buffer zone within the overgrown forested area. Alternatively, plant near your border lines as markers.
Good morning Martijn. What caught my attention was your sophisticated lifestyle covered in simplicity where your systematic determinism defines an impeccable finish in the things you do. The isolation of a monastery "crosses" a life dedicated to the insistence determined to be useful to those around you. Success teacher, the Italian Alps, many would like to live in this geography. Stay in peace
Hello Martin, moment of peace and tranquility 🙏. The sound of the water, the birdsong, the surrounding fauna, everything is good . Each video is an inspiration to me . See you next week
Hello everyone! Welcome to another blog from Martijn Doolaard, and sit back with a hot tea/coffee or beverage of choice and enjoy! Cheers from Stanley, in Woodstock, Ontario Canada 🇨🇦
It is always such a delight to see your weekly progress. I have been watching for more than a year from Australia and remember my time in the Ticino, when I see the landscape you are in. Sending you warmest well wishes.
The Italian Job ,, 1969 starring Michael Caine , Noel Coward and many other famous actors. Interesting that although most of the movie was filmed in Turin , Italy . The mini scenes were filmed in the Sowe Valley sewer system ( new duplication construction , I hastened to say!) in Coventry , Uk .
I'm also concerned with how much shade you're creating around the greenhouse. Will you clear away some of the trees from the area to the Left of the entrance?
Martijn after all those months of hard work to bring the house to completion, it is lovely to see you out there, freedom cycling again. Beautiful restful videos, music to match. Look foward to next week.
Hello Martijn, what a beautiful life. I congratulate you on that home and what you have created. Peace and harmony of place is something like being in paradise. Thank you for sharing and teach us that there is a better life down there. QBY = GOD BLESS YOU. TAKE CARE.
Love your greenhouse. But heres a tip: put stones arround it. this will prevent the dirt to splash against the glass when rain starts, so you dont have to clean them often :)
Love your greenhouse...am concerned, however about the placement of the apple trees...when fully grown, they'll end up shading your green house? I don't think you'll want that.....
My hubby has a farm and green houses, grapes vines grow everywhere and will cover other plants, we grew ours over a trellis area alone ( away) from other veggies., but later stopped as just too much work to tidy the trails of vine. We grow tomatoes, cucumbers, cabbages ( onions and potatoes - similar to what you did on raised bed separately), herbs, spinach, green onions, lemons, peppers and the like. We have opposite weather though, scorching hot ! It all depends on the environment in which you live. As I always like to say : “Do your best and God will do the rest” . Thank you for your wonderful posts.
I have watched your channel from Day one. Your detailed & steady work is an inspiration. Your pause to reflect and consider what is a priority is a great example for all of us humans to live by. Thank you 😊
Just from hearing the Birds, and hearing the sound of your little espresso pot I got that carmel coffee taste of memory in my mouth, I had to go make some, I haven't drannk a coffee in months, so thank you, your videos are ALWAYS So pleasurable
Das stimmt. Ich wohne mitten in einer Kleinstadt und liebe die natürlichen Geräusche aller Art. Kein Radio, kein TV seit vielen Jahren. Heute tropft der REGEN auf die Fensterbank und ich sehe dieses Video.
I learned from a contractor on RU-vid - Mike Holmes, wood shouldn't touch earth it will rot. I hope your green house is on cement, stone or metal. It's a pretty green house and I enjoy your videos. Thank you
i think he burned the wooden beams that he dug down in the earth that will prevent rot. not sure about the planterbeds. but the one he has outside is still fine and tht is over 2 years by now. the woodposts that holds the outdoor kitchen has cement in the ground only the pillars
My husband and I look forward to your video every week. So wonderful. I'm hoping the bottom of your greenhouse will not suffer from rot as it looks to be right on the soil. Did you happen to check as to how tall and wide your new fruit trees will become? They seem a little close to your beautiful greenhouse which will want all the sun it can get. Heads that have a bicycle helmet on them are very attractive ... I hope that in future videos we see you protecting that brain.
Thank you Martijn . Your videos always leave me with a peaceful feeling that all is right with the World. Your new e-bike is just the right tool for the job where you live. You will get a lot of enjoyment from that, I am sure.
Every time I watch your videos, I feel nostalgic, I envy you, you're lucky... but hey, you worked hard for that. Now you can finally enjoy and relax. You look more serene. You live in a dream place
Martijn , secondo me hai piantato gli alberi troppo vicino alla serra.Crascendo faranno molta ombra e a quel l'altitudine le piantine hanno bisogno di tanto sole, specie i pomodori e i peperoni. Scusa se mi intrometto
I also live in the mountains in Piemonte and the e-mtb is a delightful way to explore off road. Anyone who thinks it is not still a good workout should try one of these for a few hours off road. Still have to work but can ride a lot further, up steeps which would otherwise have to walk.
I'm guessing he didn't "buy" the bike. Three of my regular RU-vid channels have shown me a new e-bike like this in the last 24 hours, so I'm thinking it is just the latest advertising wave.
I believe you’ve planned you fruit trees to close to the greenhouse. Don’t know much about fig trees, but the apple trees are going to get big and bock the sun from the greenhouse. Going to have to trim extensively every year to keep them in check. Yard is looking great and I love the greenhouse. Hope you get enough assist with the bike going up those mountains. I’d need a motorcycle to bike there. Haha. 😂enjoy the beautiful weather while it’s around. Been raining way too much much in Wisconsin, USA.
There is nothing better than living in a very beautiful place and appreciating it, and that's what you're doing. I liked your greenhouse very much. The place you live in looks like our Black Sea. I have an exam, I'm studying for it and I watch videos like this from time to time, I came across you for the first time. You have inspired me and I want to build a greenhouse like this when I go home, I hope it comes true. ☺
Love your content, enjoying your craftsmanship, ingenuity, and skill! Just curious…those 2 apple trees you planted by your greenhouse, when they grow up, are they going to block all the sun from your greenhouse, thus defeating the purpose of the greenhouse?
Your greenhouse is so pretty, Martjin. How lucky you were to receive those windows. Of course you said they’re easy to find as windows are custom to each house, but still, they make for a charming greenhouse.
The trees should be planted in next to the chicken coop. I planted a fig in my walled garden. It was tiny. 5 years later it was an enormous tree. It took that long for it to bear fruit though. I dont think the fig can be contained inside the greenhouse maybe behind the chicken coop and wrap it in winter
Thanks Martijn for you weekly updates video, my mum lives alone in the countryside between Lyon and Grenoble she is 93 years old and every Sunday she is awaiting your news like Sunday mass thanks for your consistency and beautiful videos
Finally an ebike! I never thought you would get one but I'm so happy you have discovered how good they are, especially in the mountains. I am looking forward to your videos even more than before. Happy trails.
I LOVE your new E-Bike, Martijn ❤! The drone shots when you hike, cycle, or go to town is SPECTACULAR. Your cozy homestead is now beginning to look vey homely and comfortable. Keep up the GOOD work. Until next week. Much love xxx
I am amazed how the people of this area build these cabin from rock and so close to the cliffs . Most of the wild flowers in the field are familiar and some are not. Love more apple trees. So glad the ladies and their gent will have a safe place to roam. My favorite part of this video Martijn, was the evening sky after dinner with your friends. So beautiful. The mountains on your bike ride was also breathtaking. Have a great and safe week. Ann from Va USA 🇺🇸
Fietsen is heerlijk! Ik moest erg lachen om het wegjagen van de bruine kip. Behalve gedegen en serieus kan je ook grapjes maken.😂. En de luchten waren ook weer fantastisch. Bedankt voor de prachtige opnames.
Hello Martijn, my daughter lives in Portland Oregon & she planted a cherry tree in her back garden. It loves the snow & has thrived, so much fruit you need to put it somewhere where the fallen fruit won’t be a problem when it’s full grown. The tree has grown 30ft over 15 years. She also put in a hedge of blueberry’s ( you need two different varieties) & they have survived the winter snow. I must tell you about these bee hives that an Australian father & son invented. Google “ flow hive “ you will be amazed. Very very little work attached to looking after them & robing the hive of its honey is no work attached at all. Of course the bees will pollinate all your fruit & vegies. Best thing ever…. Better then sliced bread….lol! As always love your videos/ blogs. So looking forward to next Sunday. Stay well & happy. Cheers Noeline. 🙏👏👍🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺
I remember when the father & son first started the Flow Hive business! I yearned for one and tried to order but they were having shipping issues. I lost track of them and now they're so expensive I can't afford one. It's a shame but I imagine those that do have them really enjoy beekeeping and the flowing honey! Great suggestion for Martijn.
@@juliaconway5866 hi Julia, the father & Son have moved to Brisbane, Qld. & have a huge warehouse/ factory making the Flow Hives & sending them all over the world. I did not think they were expensive at around $1,300. Because you don’t have to buy all the equipment ( like the Stainless Steel spinning container ect ect …) you don’t have to sterilise all the equipment so makes it so much more simple & a lot less work load. You don’t have to replace the wax honeycomb frames either….. honey flow hives you just pull the handle & the internal wire slices the wax off the frame & the honey flowers out to the bottles you have arranged under the drain hose. So very easy. Not like the original beehives. With the old hives you had to smoke the Bees into a stupor before taking all the honey frames out & then start the long process of spinning the sterilised barrel that you put the frames into to get the honey out. Long drawn out ,messy process & then you have to clean & sterilised everything again & make new wax frames….. on & on it goes… The Honey Flow hives are so very little work with a huge benefit…. At least 20 Kilo of honey per 1 unit. I am really impressed with them. Also great for the environment. If all the bees die, humanity will not survive. I though Tara & John might be able to get sponsored by the owners to Promote this product & make a huge amount of money producing & selling the honey. Win win I say. Thanks for replying Julia. 🙏🇦🇺👏👍
@@juliaconway5866 opps, I write to another couple in Portugal “ the Newbys” I have told them also about the Honey Flow hives……… I meant to write “ Martijn Doolaard in the above script. Lol! I’ve got an excuse, I am old…. Ahaaaa. Julia you should check out “ The Newbys “ their in Portugal & are renovating an old homestead on acreage. It’s a fabulous vlog.
This is my Sunday morning jewel. My highlights were: My amazement of the crumbled down stone buildings built in such obscurity where you did a drone footage at the beginning of the video. Loving the sound of the rain on the roof of the greenhouse while you were inside working. Got a kick out of the little water toss at the chicken. I was imagining the fresh smell of the grass you were weed whacking around your house. The work seems never ending, and then comes the maintenance. Not forgetting the extra work you have to do just to video and edit for our enjoyment. Eating outside in nature, a big plus. So glad you got an electric bike, on your rough terrain. We have electric bikes and use them a lot, not being afraid of the big hills anymore. Thanks Martijn. Mary from Tucson Arizona.
Hello Martin! Please put on a helmet when riding a bike, falls in the mountains can be messy if you hit a rock on your head. You will really enjoy those roads, what envy! Another thing. The fig tree is a bad tree to put near any construction, its roots break everything and will shade you in the greenhouse!! You don't want that in winter. Greetings!!
@@poodlegirl55as a mountain biking instructor (and many other outdoor sports) i will definitaly recommend wearing a helmet on steep mountain trails like Martijn mentioned
@@poodlegirl55 That's all very well, but falling on a mountain is not the same as falling somewhere else. Besides, there is no one there to help you. Better safe than sorry, don't you think?
