3 Penny Films remembers the Miami Hurricanes' 1987 National Championship team that went 12-0. Jimmy Johnson, Greg Mark, Art Kehoe, Michael Irvin and others look back at Miami's 1986 and 1987 teams.
What’s amazing about the Canes in that era is that majority of the players are from Florida, not the biggest players overall compared to Oklahoma or Notre Dame, and the players/staffs/coaches all changed a program from barely a football team to top contenders in the nation against top football programs traditionally. It was definitely special because the amount of status they have too.
80's 90's Hurricanes made me a college football fan. Pioneers , in coaching, plays, attitude, recruiting etc etc. If they had the BCS system back then Miami would have won 10 more National titles from '83 to '06 . US college football is better when Miami is relevant... too bad they haven't been for a long time. One last thing, schedule , Miami played everybody!! Not like today when Alabama and Ohio St and other top programs have 2 big games in the regular season.
Jimmy brought much of that staff and those same tough practices to Dallas, where they became 3 time world Champions. And don't forget the same swagger!
I commend you for coming to our side cause either you love the canes or you hate us especially coming from Ohio state do you agree they cheated us in the national championship against Ohio state
Nothing was going to stop us in 1987 after that devastating loss to Penn State in the Fiesta Bowl. Yes, Penn State beat us fair and square in 1986. We didn’t respect them and they punched us in the face. That’s exactly what our program needed to make the 87 team great. The 87 team knew not to underestimate anyone because they could be beat if they didn’t bring their “A” game. We had a couple of close games (FSU and South Carolina) but we dominated everyone else on our schedule. The University of Miami was a team that kids like me could relate to. Neither of my parents went to college so I wasn’t beholden to a particular University/College. Like most kids, I’d watch college football on Saturday. I saw a bunch of guys (most) on Miami who came from backgrounds similar to mine or worse playing football and having fun and I absolutely loved it!!! It was like a drug to me. I loved the swagger and the no fear attitude that we brought to the game. Who can forget Highsmith telling Bozworth “I ain’t afraid of you bit*h” during the coin toss against Oklahoma in the Orange Bowl? Love him or hate him, Bozworth was a BEAST!! He was the best LB/Defensive player in college football at the time. Highsmith looked the Devil in the face and basically said NOT TODAY Mother Fuc*er!!! That attitude effected me and still does to this day. We need to face tough challenges in life and not be afraid to say “I ain’t afraid of you bitch!!” Now I figured out pretty early on that I was never going to play football at “The U.” However, I brought that attitude to my HS team. I was a LB who wore #1 in honor of my all time favorite Cane Jesse Armstead. Wearing a single digit number as a LB back in those days was unheard of where I played. Starters were expected to wear numbers like 44, 55, and 56. When people would ask me why I chose #1 I’d quote Armstead “when you’re the #1 LB in the country you might as well wear the number.” Lol, I look back at that time in my life and think people must’ve thought I was a jerk and if I’m being honest I was. The thing is I didn’t care then and I really don’t care now. It helped me be the best player that I could be and it helped my team win football games. In the end, that’s really all that matters. I’ve been a Cane’s fan since 1984 and I’ll be one for life. I’m looking forward to beating the pants off of those puss*es from Gainesville this weekend. Let’s go CANES!!!!!
The University Miami was one of the most expensive colleges (if not the most expensive) in the nation. Most NCAA football fans still have no clue about this.
I'm ou fan.glad we were only shitty during 90's. The u got best of us. But wouldn't trade anything considering we are always still to this day end season top ten decades later. Sad to see the u hasn't done anything sense miss the rivalry.
I love my Miami Hurricanes more than anything and I know we will see our Canes dominate and compete for national titles again year after year starting in a few years it will be the late 1980s all over again Go Canes
@@observing8686 just got 2 5 star players in recruiting we are ranked number 3 in recruiting alot of the talent is from Miami that's where they grew up and they wanna play for their city Go Canes
It's a bit harder when your players have to actually be student athletes. The 80s Miami teams were excellent. But the number of probations surrounding the NCs tell a story.
Steve Walsh is my favorite Canes QB ever. I maintain if Walsh started the Fiesta Bowl as a sophomore, the Canes would’ve won 2 NTs in a row. He just didn’t make mistakes.
Testing, testing, is this thing on... I pray that you are watching this Coach Manny Diaz. We NEED to be 'the team to beat again'. Move us forward... The 🙌
So glad for them they were able to exorcise those Penn St8 ghosts. People dont realize how close this team was to winning 4 national titles in a row - the upset vs PSU in 86, the 1 point loss at ND in 88, if not for those, this team wins 4 national titles in a row!
@@suaveG216 Yep in 85 they actually would have won the national title had they beaten Tennessee in that sugar bowl but the canes played awful and UT took it to them. They would have deprived Oklahoma of yet another championship.
Jimmy Johnson blew that Penn St. game! 1st and goal at the 5, and not once did he give the ball to Alonzo Highsmith- who was just destroying the Penn St defense! He had like, 125 yards in 20 carries.
Man jimmy knew how to balance aggressiveness and being smart. Problem is today we don’t let players be themselfs, instead we try to please the good boy image
I hope th U can get back to this again soon!!!!! There will never ever be another school like the University of Miami. The legacy will not be repeated !!!!!!
I get tired of people complaining about Miami players being arrogant. You should be arrogant. You should go on that field with bad intentions for the other team. No f*cking mercy for the other side because we're soldiers on that field. It's all about the "U" baby!!!
Saint Michael Football is becoming conservative and I fucking hate it. It’s about being heartless and taking no shit. And that’s why miami was as good as they were..... All about that U baby 5-0
That 1987 Miami hurricanes were like the Los Angeles lakers that same year motivated by a heart breaking loss the year before both favored in 1986 with the Lakers repeating as NBA champions while Miami was favorite to win the national championship game arriving in Tempe Arizona with their swagger also wearing military fatigue fot intimidation it didn't work in the Fiesta Bowl Both used that season as a mission & it was accomplished
All of the Miami Hurricane players this year need to watch this video over and over again until they realize that just being average is unacceptable at tha []__[]
A dynasty I will put the 2001 team against any team that’s played Alabama LSU USC Florida Notre shame doesn’t matter. Colin cowherd said this and I don’t agree with a lot of what he says but I agree with this he said when Miami was great it was like watching a pro team when Alabama was great it was like watching a great college team. Schnellenberger and Johnson change the way teams play college football you can hate all you want this was a great program. The only team that could beat Miami was Miami and they did at a few times and it cost us national championships will be back
Miami should have like 10-11 titles. 86- If Vinny doesn't shit the bed. 88- If the refs don't fuck up vs ND. 94- if we don't blow the 4th vs Neb. 2000- if we don't get screwed again. 2002- again refs screwing Miami vs OSU. I would say 1992 but Alabama simply killed us. they deserved it.
Miami is just like N D cant admit when they get beat its alway beat our selves.Amazing all the fighting not a part of football conservitive talk 20 Years later helmets getting pulled off etc. You got beat by Wash. You got beat by Boston College You got out Coached by Penn St. You got out played by Alabama . You got broken by Nebraska. How many trophies you got ya a measly 5 Alabama USC N D. OKLA.have way more . You can say the same thing about Nebr they have 5 also change a couple little things here and there and they have 10 12 titles. You had a few good years strung out thats it. Ooh look at our wins how about your losses. IT takes a man of inner self esteem to look at his losses and stand back up. Why is it when I imagine your best teams against other teams Best teams you loose weather its Penn St Alab. NEBR.WASH. I think BC got lucky but how many times did you guys gey lucky????? Ya alot REALITY CHECK
@@randytwidwell6955 man shut that shit up. First off why the hell are you on a Miami video in the first place? Oh I can tell you why! Your a typical Miami hater. Miami has had some great teams period. That 2001 team forget about it nobody and I mean nobody could beat that team period. And ally of what this man is saying is true. There’s a lot of political shit in college football and there’s been a lot of teams robbed of games and not just Miami. GO CANES
@@randytwidwell6955 Miami Hurricanes is and always will carry that mantle as the team with swagger like no other, whether you love it or hate it. As far as discussions on games played in their glory years, most if those opinions were right on target, they in reality should have won 4 in a row and one of those losses was due to mediocre playing for sure, the other was due to an outrageous call by an Official. Period! For sure, Lady Luck plays a part, no matter how great you are, in an outcome, sometimes that ball just doesn't bounce your way. Most of the time the best team wins, but there are those exceptions. I'm sure other Fans have similar conversations when discussing good or bad memories. I didn't hear any excuses for Miami's dismal record for the past 20 years, just accepting mistakes made and taking responsibility for a long long stretch of being below average and accepting it. Coming into 2022- 2023.....Well let's just say Miami Fans are excited. It's going to be a great year of football, yes, there are some great teams out there ready to go so this coming season should be the most competitive games than we have seen in the last 3 or 4 years. Let's Go Canes!
Lol. OU had 12 players on the field and still got bombed. I was 4 in 1987 so I missed this season but I caught 1994 and on. This masterpiece just filled in a big gap. Thanks.
I HATE hearing a player call his COACH by their first name...maybe im old school...im 41 but EVERY football and baseball coach i had in High School that i see or even talk to on FB that was 25 26 years old when i was a 16,17,and 18 year old only a few years older than me i still call COACH!!!my college baseball coach was 62 when i played and afterwards i still called him not only about next level baseball decisions advice but LIFE advice..just DONT DO IT...its like calling your Dad by his first name...i know id have been killed if i woulda done that
IF THERE WAS EVER A VIDEO MADE THAT DESCRIBED THE GENUINE FABRIC OF THE SACRIFICES MADE AND WHAT IT TOOK TO PUT THE UNIVERSITY OF MIAMI ON THE MAP.....I JUST WATCHED IT THE ONLY DIFFERENCE FROM THEN WITH JJ & NOW, IS I FEEL COACH GOLDIE IS IN FOR THE LONG HALL THIS SHOULD BE A REGULAR & MANDATED FILM REVIEW, NOT ONLY FOR THE PLAYERS & COACHES....BUT NEW RECRUITS AS WELL IT'S LIKE THE 'PLAY MAKER' SAID...."THIS IS WHAT IT TAKES TO WEAR THE "U" ON THE SIDE OF YOUR HELMET".... NOTHING LESS! A++
