CLIP DESCRIPTION:
When one juror changes his vote during the secret ballot, Juror #3 (Lee J. Cobb) is hell-bent on finding out who it was.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
A Puerto Rican youth is on trial for murder, accused of knifing his father to death. The twelve jurors retire to the jury room, having been admonished that the defendant is innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. Eleven of the jurors vote for conviction, each for reasons of his own. The sole holdout is Juror #8, played by Henry Fonda. As Fonda persuades the weary jurors to re-examine the evidence, we learn the backstory of each man. Juror #3 (Lee J. Cobb), a bullying self-made man, has estranged himself from his own son. Juror #7 (Jack Warden) has an ingrained mistrust of foreigners; so, to a lesser extent, does Juror #6 (Edward Binns). Jurors #10 (Ed Begley) and #11 (George Voskovec), so certain of the infallibility of the Law, assume that if the boy was arrested, he must be guilty. Juror #4 (E.G. Marshall) is an advocate of dispassionate deductive reasoning. Juror #5 (Jack Klugman), like the defendant a product of "the streets," hopes that his guilty vote will distance himself from his past. Juror #12 (Robert Webber), an advertising man, doesn't understand anything that he can't package and market. And Jurors #1 (Martin Balsam), #2 (John Fiedler) and #9 (Joseph Sweeney), anxious not to make waves, "go with the flow." The excruciatingly hot day drags into an even hotter night; still, Fonda chips away at the guilty verdict, insisting that his fellow jurors bear in mind those words "reasonable doubt." A pet project of Henry Fonda's, Twelve Angry Men was his only foray into film production; the actor's partner in this venture was Reginald Rose, who wrote the 1954 television play on which the film was based. Carried over from the TV version was director Sidney Lumet, here making his feature-film debut. A flop when it first came out (surprisingly, since it cost almost nothing to make), Twelve Angry Men holds up beautifully when seen today. It was remade for television in 1997 by director William Friedkin with Jack Lemmon and George C. Scott.

If you watch the movie in detail, it is the old man, and not the Henry Fonda character that is the key to the entire trial. All along the way, he moves the plot along, and in the end, provides the proof the women couldnt have seen the killing. He represents wisdom and life experience. Also, its Juror Number six played by Edward Binns that sticks up for the old man and defends him, even threatening to beat up Juror number three, Lee J. Cobb, for disrespecting the old man.

I think he came from Italy, he has a speech about how democracy is so important, because he's seen life without it, and in doing so reminds the rest of the jury about the importance of their current position.

I have looked several times at this beautiful film and the commentaries. It is1957. No black men nor women in the jury. Did not see any remarks about it. Why?
@paulthompson8996

Because not everything has to be about race? And having a woman on the jury might have buggered up the title.

Good spot and probably a mistake, but if you listen @ 1:43 you'll hear a chair being moved, so it's possible Fonda could have stood up as things were getting heated or just decided to stand up in the middle of the row scene without the chair making a noise.

No, this isn't that Pauly Shore bomb Jury Duty. 8 is not the killer, he is just someone who doesn't think the case is cut and dried and that's why he wants ti discuss it.

If the vote was counted in today’s world no one would write out the words “guilty” or “not guilty” it’d be like “G” for guilty and “NG” not guilty haha

I doubt that, because those sort of abbreviations are used in colloquial settings, not formal ones like a trial.

Great film, but the jury actually took on more responsibility than they're suppose to. They're supposed to base their decision on what was presented in court, NOT make up evidence of their own; Evidence that they can't fact check against the evidence presented in court.
@MissCaraMint
@MissCaraMint 3 года назад
They are supposed to determine reasonable doubt actually. Is it reasonable to assume that the evidence presented could only add up to one answer, here it wasn’t.
@sha11235
@sha11235 3 года назад
There are a lot of things in the story that really don't make sense. For example, you do not just change your vote on one small fact, like that there is more than one knife. You have to look at all the evidence and if you still think the kid is guilty, like 4 did at one point, you vote that way.
