Mosalingua is very good, it’s an app I’m not sure if there’s a website, and it’s free, but there are not many languages. It’s definitely worth to check it out though.

it is... I have learned with duolingo french(I had a streak of 80 days) and in my first encounter with a french person she asked me, "comment tu t'appelle" and I had no IDEA what she was saying.

@@doshi050050 I mean to be fair to Duo (I love to rag on it haha), most apps/programs would have the same problem. Even though I did a lot wrong in my Swedish learning journey, I can definitely say that I was never completely lost in real conversations, because I just had so many of them.

Yeah for sure, I don't disagree with you man, and that's what this video is for. But like, I look at my RU-vid analytics and literally 90% of my audience is from rich first world countries, and people over here (in "the West") tend to make dumb decisions about how to spend their money, e.g. $1000 on a new phone? Sure. $4 a month on a program that will actually help you learn a language? No way! Better put Duolingo on the phone instead! It's those people I'm talking to, not people in the Middle East.

@@daysandwords I know it's crazy how irrational we are with money. Spending $7 a day on shitty school lunch (when we still had school) was nothing but when thinking about buying useful upgrades for apps then it's the most expensive thing ever.

I've been learning this language for 2 years like you and I'm proud of myself that I can understand almost everything that the author said. Moreover I don't translate his speech into my tongue language and it makes me happy and confident. I agree. DuoLingo’s purpose isn’t to make someone fluent, it’s to get someone started in learning a language.

Exactly, I don't think anybody expects to be holding university lectures in a language they learned strictly through Duolingo. Currently I'm focusing all my language efforts on German, but every morning I do couple Spanish, French and Russian lessons on Duolingo. I've never did any other language content in Spanish besides Duolingo and after an year, I can understand Spanish memes from my friends, I can talk about basic stuff, I can get around in Spanish countries as a tourist and not feel as a total moron when I go out with Spanish only groups. I could never have a fluent conversation, but it's effective to gain the basics, so you can build on it through more fun content such as series, movies and simpler books... And most of all, it's fun, which is subjective, but I had much better time with it than with Busuu, Rosetta or Speakly, since I was actually looking forward to it, not as a chore... And consistency is always king.

duo looks like a game and feels like a game, my old mother plays learning english like she would play in mobile games. I use it to get used to the new language and later to spend some down time when i need to relax, but not waste my time entirely.

it’s great, but unfortunately not always accurate…. i’m glad you find it fun though, although if you’re serious about the language, you can learn using it along side other apps

Someone told me Lingodeer wasn't free anymore...? Beelingual... hmm, I had mixed feelings about it.

It's also just useful in general. Because you can give shortcuts to speed up/slow down/resume normal speed, it's super useful for finding the best bits of videos or just picking a speed you like. I use it literally dozens of times a day.

@@daysandwords Maybe it depends on your target language. When I was studying Spanish I couldn't get the stop shut up haha, I received messages from maybe 10 new people each day, I can imagine less common languages might not be the same though.

Yes I also find it useful for that. For example, Hugo from InnerFrench... no need to watch him at 1.0x because he speaks slowly anyway. I watch him at 1.35x or something.

Merci. OK, first, the Vas y thing - "Vas y" is actually something we say in English for this context sometimes, though not very often. Basically, I'm not necessarily even speaking "French" at that moment. A lot of Australians also say "Trezz bien" (pronouncing the S, and we know that it's wrong, it's kind of joke to deliberately mispronounce French). "Allons y" and "c'est parti" are not part of the English vernacular so we would regard that as a bit pretentious (at least when not on a language learning channel). But either way it's a deliberate "misuse" on my part, I've said it in a few videos, it's basically an in-joke with a few people, who said that if I say it then French people will correct me and I replied that when you make legitimate mistakes in videos, almost no one corrects them, but when you say that Duolingo isn't good (basically a fact) then you get corrected by every man and his dog. So the joke was to see how much I would have to say "vas y" before someone "corrected it" and the answer is about 60,000 views and at least 200 comments haha. Also it's a reference to the stock music that I use; I often use a track which the artist named "Vas y". Yeah sorry I don't really check Facebook much. En tous cas, je peux tout comprendre, et si tu veux, tu peux toujours écrire en français.

Haha, thanks. I'm not actually a polyglot, I only speak Swedish well, and French a bit (and if I were trying to "rack up points" then I could say I can understand Norwegian and Danish if the latter is written down... but that's obviously only from Swedish).

Not really. If you're a native or very high level English speaker, you don't need subtitles for French. Listen, listen again, listen a lot, and then listen some more.

i really recommend to watch videos with the subtitles (in your target language), if you only listen to the videos, then you will be missing a lot as Steve Kaufmann says in this video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-HS7k41esv_A.html (it's in spanish, but it has autogenerated subtitles in english); learning a language is mainly about listening and reading, then, if you did it the right way, you will speak and write because you have already learned how and when to use the words. Find strategies that you enjoy, it's the key for learning anything, its not this or that app, its about the way you learn, we all learn in different ways, so if you feel that something is working for you then use it!

It's just a music playing and recording app, like the one that comes default on your phone only I find it easier to use and definitely better for language stuff. So it's for downloaded or recorded music.

It's pretty much just because they can't ever get enough bad press in my mind: they've asserted themselves as the number 1 name in language learning and it's crap because it's rubbish. How long ago did you do your French? They also helped me with Swedish but that was before the series of cash grab updates that made the thing stupidly slow. My French is OK and I tried it in French again like 2 months ago and it pissed me off so much, it just sucks and yet they have crowned themselves "THE BEST WAY TO LEARN *insert name of language*". It's a farse IMO.

I suppose if you are saying that it’s a slower way to learn and there are faster methods - I suppose that could be a fair point

I would give TurkishPod101 a go. Try to listen to the Turkish parts a LOT more than the explanations in English.

OK, so, firstly, sorry to hear that! I am not really sure about you personally (as in, how you motivate yourself etc.) but I think it's best to realise that this person is clearly a dickhead in all aspects of life. I've come across these people before. "I do everything better than you. You play the trumpet? Ha! My brother is way better than you!" In reality these people feel small and insignificant inside. They don't realise that this is why they're doing it, but there is possibly something in their language learning history that means they are bitter about the process. By telling you to stop learning it, they are really talking to their past selves (who haven't changed and won't change). I would try to find a really nice and kind teacher on iTalki or something (people are gonna call me sexist, but you've got a way better chance with a female) and just tell her the history of your learning and whatever, and they'll build you back up. This is simplified but I don't have time for a full essay on it right now. 2nd question: Matt vs Japan recommends a silent period for this. But I think you can also just try to pay more attention to what natives say. e.g. I don't have this problem much because when I hear natives say something I am always like "Oh, I've been saying that wrong..." So for you, the prescription is: lots of input, lots of encouragement. BTW, what language?

@@daysandwords The language is French, but it is the first language that I ever seriously attempted. I know you obviously study French as well, but for me, this language would be more akin to your experiences with Swedish, as that was the language you had said you made tons of mistakes in because you didn't know how to learn a language yet. That's my position with French, I've spent almost a year learning it, but a lot of that time was not used efficiently and I could've been much more proficient had I used MvJ's method from the beginning. Unfortunately, I only really started watching his (and as of a few days ago, your) videos more recently where they, along with that negative experience, told me that what I was doing before was not working (or, at least, not working as well as it could). As for that guy, what really got to me was why he said he was dissuading me (to put it in nice terms) from continuing: "I don't want low-IQ retards like yourself soiling my language." Now, I know I shouldn't put much stock into the opinions of random people on the internet, but that really got to me. I guess it felt like betrayal, even though I never met this person before. I understand, to an extent, being protective of your language, even I get annoyed at common grammar and spelling mistakes people make in English, but this felt exceptionally harsh and personal. I think I prefer speaking with Belgians, when it comes to French anyway; every Belgian I've spoken with has been really encouraging. I had started learning another language because of that experience and I plan to pursue it along with French. At first I thought I would never interact with French again, but I would later watch a video in French and come to realize that I understood just about everything and came to the conclusion that it wouldn't make sense to stop now, even if there's a risk that I'll have a repeat of that event again, I simply know too much at this point to make quitting seem feasible, even if part of me resents the language a little bit now that I feel "stuck" with it, as unfair to francophones everywhere as that is.

I think it has a few options for Spanish, doesn't it? Like 3 or 4... More things are starting to acknowledge at least European Spanish vs Latin American Spanish, but I'd like to see like Mexican, Argentinian etc.

Ha, I only just found that - but I still prefer mine because of the shortcuts. Like going back by 1, 2, 3, 4 or any numbers of seconds has a shortcut. The problem with going too slowly is that it does that stretch thing that messes up the quality. I sometimes do it just for a single syllable or something but not so much for pronunciation. I use it most when transcribing.

@@daysandwords FYI, on RU-vid desktop, the J and L keys jump back/forward 10 seconds. The left and right arrow keys jump 5 seconds. But I agree, the addon is very handy. It's more customizable and works on other sites that don't give you those controls normally. Thanks for the recommendation!
