12 ft V hull aluminum boat - taking a tiny old boat out for the first time

I take this little old 12 ft. V-hull aluminum boat out for a sea trial and a look at all of this old boat's features. Is a little V-hull aluminum boat better than a small flat bottom Jon Boat? We see how this small boat performs compared to the 12 ft. aluminum jon boat that I recently reviewed. This 12 ft. v hull row boat is an EldoCraft made in Smackover Arkansas back in the 1970s.
I also do a small homage to Doug DeMuro who has been reviewing cars on RU-vid for years.

I am 80 years old and no longer have much strength. I say that to say this. I bought me a 12 foot Aluminum "V' Hull boat. I have never taken it out yet, do to health reasons. I bought it, and then modified the trailer so I could handle easly (I added a third "dropdown" trailer wheel on the front). Size of the boat and trailer Vs. my ability to manuver the boat and trailer, were the determining factor about which boat to buy. So by watching you has given me the confidence to give it a try! I passed the state test for boating, and I am glad that I took it because I did not know some of the finer details about boating that may save my life.

Thank you for watching and commenting!!! That's nice to hear. Will you be paddling, or using an electric or gas motor? They each have their pros and cons. I think you'll have a fine time out on your boat!

@@WayneTheBoatGuy Where I live, storms appear quickly. Although it is a small craft (12 foot), history on the lakes here shows that way to many people get caught out on the lake and are under powered enough to make it to safety. I have seen some of the bodies and it left quite an impression on me. So, the state requires two modes of power for each craft. It could be a combination of rowing ores, electric trolling motors, or gas powered engines. There is another serious issue that many boaters are not aware of, and "espishilly in small boats," is the lack of knowledge of how to anchor safely and properly. I will not take up any more of your space talking about it, but let it be a heads up! Many people drown because of improper anchoring.

This is my second go-around with that nasty stuff. So I sold my boat, guns and any other thing that I could so as to assis my wife financially. Well, I am still here, and with no boat! Been living in the desert for ten years and just inherited a 12 foot aluminum V-bottom and I'm really, really looking forward to getting it on the water. Cool video. I recently obtained a 1973 12 ft fiberglass v hull boat from my father-in-law. It sat upside down on a 1953 homemade trailer since 1982. I spent the last couple of months re-glassing, gel coating and painting it. I also received a 1953 Evinrude 5.5 hp outboard for it.

Thanks Wayne. The PFDs are bulky but save lives. That was a great short straight to the point explanation of why you wore yours. good on you buddy Bravo!! The more we can encourage and teach people as to why we wear PFDs the better. Hopefully people will listen and take the advice. Now on to the boat. Keep the v bottom, the leaks can be fixed as Daryl said below you will most probably need a short shaft motor for that boat but you can raise the transom to accept the motor. The boat would make a great wee tender to your big four winns. Stay safe on the water bud.

Good to have some affirmation on the v bottom aluminium boat that I bought second hand at a local auction, I guess I chose this mainly because it was the same as my grandfather used to take us out in. I never thought about, as you said, the v bottom hull has you sitting up a little higher, as well as your other video saying it is more sturdy on the water. Have thought about also having a larger probably 14 foot boat, but then as you pointed out also in another viewing, I wouldn’t be able to manoeuvre it around as easily & it wouldn’t fit on my dual axel trailer. Nice work, thanks!

I have a 12' modified V of unknown origin I inherited from my Dad in '94 when he passed. The 7.5 Evinrude pushes it around quite well and it gets readily up on step with my fishing gear, cooler, oars, battery, and trolling motor. It probably is a '74 Starcraft that can take up to a 20 hp outboard (the tag on the transom says that). I know that boat has helped catch 4-6' Northern Pike in NNY, to 35 pound catfish in AL, all on artificials! With some small repairs, it has lasted over 35 years serving me and my Dad very well. Your oars will serve you much better if the oarpins were sized correctly for the oarlocks so they do not flop around when you stroke. Balance the weight better, and your speed may get better. Check out balancing your boat to plane better here on RU-vid. It is worth your time.

Reminds me of my 1962 Mirrocraft 12ft aluminum v-hull I obtained from my grandfather this year. It leaked in similar places. I used g-flex 650 on every rivet inside and out, then coated every seem with Gluvit also inside and out. Covered entire interior with 3 coats of marine grade tread paint, and exterior with several coats of marine grade exterior paint, then a clear coat. Been running it every Sunday, no leaks. On it I run primarily a 1970 6hp Johnson and also a 1964 9.5hp Johnson along with a trolling motor. Handles it all. Enjoy the boat, with a little TLC that looks like a keeper!

With the lakes that I have near me, the larger 14 foot deep V Row Boat I have is all I need. Mine is a 1950s deep V row boat. I find it more stable than the Jon Boat I have sent packing. Sometimes it's really hard to identify the manufacturer of these old boats. There wasn't a great deal of 'standardization' and requirements years ago. Often there's a small tag on the outside at the stern - sometimes it's just under the top rail but I had a jon boat that had it at the bow. It also could be on the sticker or plate that may be inside at the rear of the boat. Many boats that are over 50 years old apparently didn't even have an ID number. After you look it over really good, take lots of pictures, get a 'Bill of Sale' from the neighbor and take anything else you can with you to see if it can be registered.

@WayneTheBoatGuy
@WayneTheBoatGuy 3 года назад
From what I’ve been learning it varies. Small trolling motors (similar to mine) are very light but the battery is very heavy. A newer 4 stroke 5 hp gas engine isn’t too heavy, but if you add a battery for electric start and a fuel tank it’s a very different story. The self-contained electric systems from Torqeedo and ePropulsion are pretty light but more $$ and limited in range.

I have a 1970 gregor 12ft v hull, however I will be making a semi flat slatted mahogany floor out of some scrap wood.

Very cool! A flat floor is a nice improvement.

Just bought a 12 ft aluminium v hull sea nymph. My wife and I both weigh 300 pounds. Will it hold our fat asses?

Usually there's an info sticker on the inside near the back. It should indicate how many people, total weight, and passenger weight. Many 12 foot boats are only rated for 400-600 lbs. My 2.5 hp 2 stroke outboard weighs about 30 lbs and my supply box and anchor add another 10 lbs.
