When it was first announced that Hinky Dinky would be opening in my hometown (Sioux City, Ia), people were confused about whether it was Hinky Dinky or Piggly Wiggly. I had one of their prototype ATM card$-it was called “Bank in a Billfold”

When I was a kid, my grandma would write checks at the grocery store and I had no idea how it worked. I assumed that if you had that amount of money in the bank, you could buy your groceries but the money stayed in your account. I think I got the idea from the government.

A&P Atlantic and Pacific tea stores

I knew about grocery stores in New England that had gone out of business in my childhood: Finast, Edwards, Grand Union, Waldbaums, Fairway. I never knew there were so many others around the country! This is a great video I feel like this could have gone in for another hour 😊!

About ABCO markets in AZ...they were a mid 80s sell off of Alpha Beta stores in AZ (AB had a large number of stores in Phoenix and Tucson). When AB's parent company American Stores bought Lucky, Lucky's AZ stores were sold off to ABCO. By the end of the 90s ABCO was having financial problems and was bought by its main supplier, Fleming Foods-which went under due to the KMart bankruptcy (Fleming was the main supplier of Super Kmart). When Fleming went under, the ABCO stores were sold off to other chains, Primarily Safeway and Bashas'.

Not well known outside of Indiana, but Marsh Supermarkets were almost as popular as Krogers for decades., The commercials theme song, from when i was a kid runs in my head to this day. Haha I think it closed its last store in 2018 after a bankruptcy and being absorbed by competitors.

No mention of Dominicks, Scotts, Eagle, Big Bear, etc...?

I still miss Super Fresh, it was a spinoff of a&p. Closed in my hometown of Hampton, VA in 1998, after a disastrous Farmer Jack rebranding.

I was a butcher for A&P for 12 years,saw the very poor upper management decisions happening in 2006,I decided it was time to move on ! Moved to AZ now been with a Kroger company for 18 years.

I miss Big Bear

In my town 35 years ago we had like 3 dozen grocery stores by like 12 different brands. Kroger/Harvey's/Piggly Wiggly/ A&P/ Bruno's/Publix/Winn Dixie/Food Lion/Big star and more. But now only Walmart/Publix/Food Lion with a total of 6 stores. 😞

I was surprised to find an Acme store while driving on the Maryland Eastern Shore. I didn't realize they were still around.

I never got to experience Hinky Dinky and during the recording I kept screwing up the name. Hinky Pinky. Hanky Panky. It was tough to remember.
