Can you please address what to do when your washing machine manufacture's guarantee says 'NO VINEGAR' because it damages the rubber seals (or something like that) and voids your warrantee? @@christinamoxon Hi how would they know you use vinegar, unless you tell them... 😉 Also, unless its sitting in vinegar over long periods of time, vinear wont harm the seals. You could do a quick cold wash after using vinegar add soda powder (not bicarb) for water softening and cleaning your machine. £1 at Tescos for 1kg if your worried about warranties and breaking seals. To be honest though the rinse cycle within the vinegar wash your doing will get rid of excess residue. Wiping and rinsing out the drum and seal, especially the grooves in the seal, with clean water on a cloth then wiping out with a dry microfibre cloth (or leaving the door open) until bone dry, will stop errosion on the rubber.

We have 9 children. Starting at around 8 years old, they start learning to do their own laundry. If they can figure out video game controllers, they can figure out a washer and dryer.😉

Tip from German winter laundry routine. Hanging laundry especially towels outside when it is freezing the towels get super soft and one would think it will take ages to dry but it’s actually not true. I highly recommend hanging laundry outside also in the winter.

So glad you are encouraging line drying! I'm in my 60s and have never owned a dryer. (I live in sunny south Texas so no issues.). People used to make fun of me for line drying but they are realizing how good it is. Saves money and your clothes will last longer since they aren't rubbing against themselves in the heat of a dryer. My towels literally last for years.

I moved into my childhood home last year and didn't have a dryer for a few months, but the clothesline was in great shape still. While inconvenient to work around rainy days and my erratic work schedule (ie, wasn't always home when weather was conducive for line drying or didn't have enough daylight left), it took me back to a time when life was simpler and slower. Line dried sheets are still my favorite. My friends didn't understand why I didn't just go to the laundromat, which is its own topic, but I didn't understand why I'd bother going when I had a perfectly good clothesline and mostly sunny weather.

Tips for hanging laundry outside or inside: 1. Hang jeans and pants by the ankles. The bulky pocket/waistband area hangs free and dries better. Also, for long-legged people, they won’t shrink as much. 2. Hang shirts upside down. Same principle as jeans- shoulders & sleeve areas are bulkier & hang more naturally. For t-shirts & stretchy materials, fold a couple of inches of the hem over the line & pin - your hems won’t get stretched out. For traditional shirts, pin by the side hem & fold the shirt so the front hangs together - I use a 3rd pin in the center to hold the placket in place. Tug the collar & placket straight & you will have very few wrinkles. 3. To prevent fading, hang clothes inside out. 4. Sheets can span 2 lines to dry faster. 5. Hang Uncle Joe’s flowered underwear behind the towels. 🤣 6. Learn to love sun warmed, stiff towels that smell wonderful- they take a huge amount of electricity to dry in a dryer. 7. Wipe down your clothesline occasionally. Fresh air & UV rays are wonderful for deodorizing everything! You will save many $$ over time in electric bills, as well as clothing wear & tear (handfuls of dryer lint).

You didn't ask for hacks, but I'd like to share mine: After the laundry's done, I put it on an additional spin cycle. Especially with towels this works wonderfully to get the excess moisture out. Saves me on dryer time, or when I line-dry it dries quicker, too.

I tend to do most of the laundry on the same day. Since I'm doing several loads, I begin with the lightest weight items and end with the heaviest. Since lighter laundry takes less time to dry, I don't have a backup caused by waiting for the dryer. Hope that makes sense.

I love your channel. One of the reasons is that you are teaching younger generations the information (not including updated equipment and products) that used to be shared by our mothers and grandmothers! I am 70 years young. My Mother and Mother-in-Law taught me so many tricks that you have shared here. Funny thing-I LOVE ironing, always have, always will, but I don’t do it as often as I once did!

That was my favourite question, and one of the most important reasons why I love watching your channel regularly. I do the entire familys laundry and all the cleaning in my house !!! I have a top load machine, and after my laundry , I prefer to keep the door open. My machine has access to direct sunlight , so within 15 minutes the tub of my machine dries well. On days when it's not sunny, like winters, I use a napkin to dry the excess moisture inside the tub, and them leave the door open to air dry for around half an hour. For those who still may have a smelling machine, you can run a cycle of white vinegar and water, and that too will do wonders !!! Thanks Melissa for your tips

Back in the old days in middle school (6,7,8) everybody rotated through home ec, shop, art, music, health/PE as part of class schedule. Not electives, required. They should bring that concept back.

Another tip is to choose a lower level on the spin cycle. The higher the drum spins, the more water is removed from the garments which seems like the goal but it actually causes more wrinkles. Choosing medium to low spin will leave more water but cause less wrinkles and then you continue to follow that up by immediately snapping & hanging garments or by putting it in the dryer! Yes, and if you have a Permanent Press cycle, that will typically give you a lower spin as well, since that’s supposed to minimize wrinkles. Another tip to avoiding wrinkles, for clothes that can go through the dryer: remove them from the dryer about 5-10 mins before they’re fully dry, just slightly damp. Then hang or lay flat to dry the rest of the way. It also helps me avoid static in the winter months.

I have also sprayed dry clothes with water well and thrown them in the dryer for 10 minutes. Works for wrinkles really well! Even for those things that are hang dry.

We've had trouble with smelly laundry for some years. But then I figured it out! Our clothes dried too slow which made it sour (we only line dry). We got a small dehumidifier and it's the best investment I've done for our laundry! :)

I descale and do maintenance on my washing machine every month without fail I have a remainder on my phone and I live alone and I do a wash or two every single day doing the wash is one of the easy part of the housework just sort the load empty pockets put the wash on then come the end of wash I hang all of it on hangers and peg hangers

Oh THANK you SO much!!! I’m 46 yrs old and have never really learned how to do laundry the right way!! I have six children. From when my oldest was 14 and my youngest was 7 they started to do their laundry by them self. I got fed up with my two older boys always complaining about their clothes that was not clean etc SO over night they all had to do it by them self. Had 4 children at that time. Now two of them has moved out and my teenage girls do their laundry still. I do the laundry for me, my DD and my to youngest daughters (7 and 5 yrs). I will teach my older children about the skills in this video!!! 🙌😊❤️

Learned the towel roll thing when I was in school during the textile portion of our home ec. class. My wool skirts and sweaters were always dried by blocking on a towel, then rolling them overnight. Next morning they were all nearly dry. Yep, the snapping trick works. Ma always did that for towels and linens especially. (She ironed the sheets and pillowcases too....I'm not about that life at all) You know, the one thing I wish they could bottle and sell is the way my mothers linens smelled after they were washed and line dried.

I'd hazard a guess that you use liquid detergent and conditioners.and I guess.maybe your mother used powders? I only use powdet and line dry when possible.the sheets smell so fresh and clean.

Love your videos! I banned my hubby from the laundry when he shrunk my favorite sweater, & bleached a peach work shirt with white spots. I like doing the laundry. I like seeing a messy pile become clean and orgainzed. I recently started useing vinegar instead of Downey because I ran out. I relized my clothes felt great and still smelled good. I don't think I will go back. Save that $$$

I also took your earlier advice and got a metallic clip to put on the side of my washer. I hang a microfiber cloth on it and when laundry day is done, I dry out the drum, the gasket, and the door. I've only had my washer for 6 months but I want to make sure it never stinks!

Love using Vinegar as a fabric softener. Doing it for years with Lavender oil and Eucalyptus Oil. In Australia we mainly hang out our clothes on the clothesline. Thank you fir the tips.

If the Lavender and Eucalyptus are genuine essential oils, you'll also be preventing cross contamination if someone in the house is unwell and their clothes/towels/face washers/ are in with anyone else's.

Yes, I live in Melbourne and I've never owned a dryer. Occasionally in winter if I've let my washing build up I'll wash everything, put it in a blue ikea bag and take it to the laundromat where I can dry about 4 or 5 loads in one of their big dryers.

@@Kayenne54 laundromats were considered essential services during lockdown so they were still open. I have a smallish washer and take my doona to laundromat when it needs washing too. I'm lucky that I have a couple of options near me that are well managed and clean with fairly new machines. I feel the chance of picking up covid on the washing is tiny (detergent in the washing / heat in the dryer) but if you were concerned about that you could take some disinfectant wipes and give the machines a once over before using them. Or even run an empty cycle with a good slug of pine o cleen or similar before doing your own loads.

Great video! I do the laundry in my family 🧺. I do the snap thing too before putting the clothes in the dryer. Also, as soon as they’re done I fold them as I take them out of the dryer. This really does avoid wrinkles 😊.

I think an important concept to remember with washing clothes is that the detergent "grabs" the dirt, but it's the detergent getting rinsed OUT of your clothes and taking what it's "grabbed" that gets them clean. If there's too much soap and suds some of both the detergent and the gunk remains in the washing. It's counter intuitive but using less detergent so everything can get washed away, rather than more often gives a better result.

I always do my and my husband's laundry together (as well as our children's when they are staying at home) and it's my choice.I don't understand the benefit of each family member doing their own laundry separately . My husband loves cooking and cooks for both of us, he doesn't cook for himself only. When he washes the car he doesn't wash only half of it! When he pays the bill he doesn't pay only one half, when he buys food he doesn't only buy his own food! The same goes for me. I am away from home to visit my family abroad, he does do his laundry! But I find it easier to just deal with the laundry as a whole. Maybe it's because I'm from Europe where we wash clothes etc only when they NEED washing - in comparison to the US where it seems a compulsive habit to use the washing machine and the dryer all the time! But everyone needs to do what they feel is best :)

We finally ditched the front loader washer and bought a top loader with an impeller. We couldn't really afford a new washer but the front loader was disgusting. I don't see how these ever even got past quality control. As always, thanks for the video. A lot of great information. Going to switch to vinegar instead of fabric softener.

My inlaws got rid of the 30+ years old Maytag’s (in perfect working condition) and got the new front-load and absolutely hated them. She regretted ever doing that. It smelled even with the door open, it never got better. The repair man also said these new models are always breaking down and will need replacement usually around 6-7 years of use. He actually recommend to get older washers and dryers as they can be repaired and need less repair than new ones. He couldn't believe they got rid of their Maytag’s he said they probably had another 20 years in them.

I have a Miele front loader and never had a problem now 15 years old now. I have had a problem with mould or smell although I read about people having this problem but mine has always been perfectly fine with no particular effort on my behalf - strange

@@peetabrown5813 ahhh my Miele lasted 27 years , no repair needed , never smelled ( front loader ) . We bought a new one when we moved . Miele again , front loader , spin at 1400 instead of 1200 . I’m French and live in France .

When I was married , everyone did their own laundry and I did the sheets and towels and my own laundry. When my kids hit high school . They did their own too. I was visiting my daughter and boy she was backed up with laundry due to hectic work schedule and I did it all for her . She was so grateful. I also wash athletic attire separately and hang to dry . I never get those deodorant stains. I use native deodorant . I love the vinegar hack as a softener

Yeah an 🍎 for the 👩‍🏫!!! I love hanging my laundry outside in the summer, especially my bedding. Wishing I lived in a summer climate area all year round. Since I now live alone, I do all the laundry. My husband would occasionally help with the laundry when he was alive. I started teaching our son how to do laundry when he was around 8. Just simple towels at first then moved on to light and dark colors, etc after that. He had no problem doing laundry when he went away to college. In fact, his girlfriend went to the same college as him. So not only did he do her laundry, he combined their laundry loads to save money.

I just learned this tip and it’s the best thing I’ve learned. For stinky towels you can use regular pine sol in the detergent part of your washer. Pine sol is a disinfectant so it cleans really well and it also makes the fabric softener pop more so your clothes smell amazing.

@@dariakaraulova2812 I find best usage of distilled white vinegar beyond laundry. i.e. fruit🍓wash. I've also combined oxy powder by half a scoop before... I find the vinegar to provide optimal results on its own, 💯.

When I lived in Taiwan school dorm we had to wash clothes on a wash board. I am so grateful to have a washing machine now. It's life changing. I save hours every week so I can do other things like read books or learn things on RU-vid.

Hi - Great video and advice. In our house my hubby does his own, and I do the rest, but he helps me take stuff out of the dryer, so that's a bonus. I love the vinegar/essential oils idea. We use Nelly's soda powder (love it), and dryer balls, but sometimes I'd like a little more softness. Great idea. Thanks for sharing and continued success. Love PegEgg

I use delicates bags for just about everything, socks, sweaters, flouncy blouses, tights, and dresses! I've started to simply handwash my ACTUAL delicates. They seem to be much cleaner and the gentler handling makes them last longer. I also handwash my whites. I own too few of them to make up a whole load regularly, and I hate waiting to wear my one white blouse until the white's basket is full. Absolutely LOVE the laundry sheets like truearth and earth breeze. Neater than liquid detergent and lighter than pods. Great for traveling too.

I do most the laundry for hubby & me. I did most the laundry when 6 kids were home. I’ve always folded or hung clothes right after drying and really enjoy it! I pray for each family member as I fold. I also notice if things need repair or replacement soon during folding. All the kids knew how to do laundry because all got a chance to pinch hit for me during time at home. They definitely had to take their laundry from the laundry room to put away if they wanted clothes in their drawers.

I have been doing the laundry for my entire family and all the house since I was 15 years old till now. when I lived at my parents house and after marriage. In the past 25 years I used the top load machine (different brands) and I loved it because it cleaned the clothes really well but this past 2 years I moved to a new house with front load and the laundry is so frustrating because this machine doesn’t clean as well as the other ones and it doesn’t use lots of water 💦. So the laundry task that used to be therapeutic and enjoyable for me is now struggle and stressful 😫😭.

I do all the laundry for my family. I do one load every day, no matter how small. I line dry my laundry, outside when it's warm, inside when it's too cold, a days worth of laundry for my family usually fits nicely on a drying rack.

My husband and I do our own laundry and have for over 20 years. I’m tall so I learned years ago to air/hang dry all of my clothes. I do like to tumble them in an air cycle before I hang them up since it seems to help with wrinkles. But I try to do the towels since I always make sure to avoid fabric softener and I try to avoid high heat. I recently switched to the vinegar / baking soda double wash process and love it! Thanks for the video!

I definitely do all of the laundry. My husband and I have been married for 21 years and I recently had a week stay in the hospital. When I got home I had to teach my husband how to use the washing machine. I still prefer to be the one doing the laundry.

I hang dry almost all of my clothes. The dryer really does a number on clothes. Wash inside out and hang dry, and shirts stay looking new for a really long time.

Air drying is definitely better for longevity. I don't have any outdoor space, but I like to hang lightweight clothes on hangers and then put them on my shower curtain rack. They also have mini drying racks that fit in the back of the door for little things like socks and underwear.

Air drying also extends the life of jeans, plus if you live in a long cold winter region as I do air drying adds needed moisture to the air.

I intuitively figured some of these things out over many years. The garment weight was one of those that my husband always laughed at. I would call my light colored permanent press clothing, light colored lightweight. Same with darks. It has to do with drying evenly. I never knew that about the pilling though.

1) i have the same LG washer dryer set, also got the LG pedestal washer, they do a good job. 2) i do mix heavier clothes(jeans) with lighter clothing which i put in delicate wash bags 3) socks! i accumulated as assortment of black dress sock that are slightly different. rather than spending time to match them up, after use i put one inside the other. the inner one still manages to get clean and then dry. 4) i use wool dryer balls. will put a few drops of eucalyptus essential oil on one, smells nice and is supposed to be antibacterial.

I always use vinegar in every load of laundry. Cost less than fabric softener. My washer and dryer is in the basement. And I also use a timer. My husband does his laundry, my son does his, I do my laundry and I do towels. Sure has helped with my 'to do' things:)

My husband does his and my laundry, along with our towels. I do all our kids laundry, and the kitchen towels, the sheets and the junk towels/rags we use to clean around the house or dry the dog.

Hubby and I do it together. I tend to sort the load and put it in the machine before I go to work. He often does the Saturday load as he gets up to run. Either or us will empty and hang the washing either outside in the summer or on our ceiling airer in the winter - no dryer. 3 kids pretty handy at it also.

I live in Australia and it’s normal to hang clothes outside on the line, and it’s rare to use a dryer, I tend to put towels and linen in my dryer, or if I need an emergency baby item dry I’ll do that too. But I see people in America/Canada with these giant washing machines and dryers and I wish i had big machines they look so awesome!

I hang a lot to dry. My favourite technique for avoiding wrinkles? Take a few minutes to fold the wet items right out of washer. Make sure collars and sleeves are tidy and let them sit in the laundry basket for 10 minutes or so (ones that don't leak, obviously). They hang better and mostly without wrinkles after that, plus you catch any stains that didn't come out _before_ they dry.

I like the quality of your speaking voice, it seems like you have a great voice modulator :) Anyways for your question. In our household, my husband and I are doing the 50％ - 50％ thingy. He's doing the loading and I am in charge of the folding :) but if there's too much laundry then he will help me fold and so as our daughter :) By the way thank you for all the tips :)

Just as you said at the end of the video “laundry is not taught in schools” I think it would be amazing if you schools came to you to do a course for them. It could be done in conjunction with someone to teach about healthy eating and how to cook simple meals etc.

Love your videos! Re: overfilling and how a washing machine works - what if I have a top loader without an agitator? 3/4 full as well? That’s what I’ve been doing so far. It blew me away that it doesn’t have an agitator, but it’s a high end huge Samsung washer that came with my house. I think it’s less than 10 years old. It shakes but maybe it shakes less than the front loader I used to have.

You still have to make sure that it’s not overloaded. My oldest daughter overloaded mine and the balance bar under the tub broke in half. It didn’t take but a second to break either. I heard it bumping around really loud and I ran to the laundry and stopped the machine and it was already broken.

For lightweight shirts, you probably can fill a HE top loader about 40% with dry clothes. Heavy items like jeans, probably try about 20% to 30% in the tub and test to see if that amount gets good agitation. If you want to do about 50/60% lightweight items, soak first for 30 minutes to an hour and do your heavy duty, bulky cycle, or deep wash/deep clean cycle -- those cycles usually have a little more water.

Since my sons are grown and moved out I do the laundry for all my clothes and for my husband. My boys used to do their own once they were old enough to reach the controls on the washing machine. I told them if they could use 3 differenct remote controls to play their video games they could use two knobs on the washing machine.

Great tips, thank you!! I'm sad to hear though that a lot of places strongly discourage using vinegar in appliances, like dishwashers and washing machines. Have you found this to be true? They (consumer reports/Amiercan Cleaning Institute) say it breaks down rubber or metal parts and can damage the machine, causing water leaks or making it less efficient. But either way, keep up the amazing videos! You're the best!

I have an awesome tip for those folks with Ets units. I never dry my pants in the dryer so to speed things along, I lay my pants on the ets unit and smooth with my hands. They dry in record time and it completely eliminates the need for ironing.
