I intentionally chose to own less. It was a decision I made years ago when I stood face-to-face with the emptiness and burden of unneeded physical possessions. And it is a decision that I continue to choose every single day

I once lived with a group of guys from the Church I attended. There were 7 of us and one bathroom, yet somehow there was never a conflict. One of the roommates, unbeknownst to us, was a crack addict and was stealing from some of us. When it came to light what was happening he was kicked out of the Church (he actually stopped attending before the Church struck him from the roster). His parents were very wealthy so they met with us one on one and compensated people for their supposed losses or " missing" items. Except for me. I later found out that he referred to my room as "The priest's room", I guess because it was tidy, and there was nothing of any real value to be found in it! I move a lot, like every two to four years. So owning little makes life easier and helps my mental clarity. What I do own, is more about sentimental value, it has memories attached to the different seasons of my life. Heading into my life's fourth quarter I am stripping even more stuff away and I focus more on my health and encouraging those around me. You can't take anything with you. Be well.

Hang in there! IMO it's more important to be mindful about my purchases than to declutter. If I don't let junk in there's eventually no need to declutter. As you can spend the rest of your life decluttering, if you keep letting excessive things in. Can you do something else, instead of shopping for fun or relieve? Call a friend? Go for a walk? Do some meditation? Or make a donation to charity for the money you were prepared to waste?

More appreciation how true I started my journey 2 years ago and also minimized my clothes. I paired down to four jeans I love and just today one of them started ripping at a seam .. it made me sad but also grateful that I had worn a garment as long as I could get good use and happiness from it .. before hand there were piles of pants unused sitting in my closet - unappreciated. Living a minimal life is a fuller life for me! Thanks for the inspiration

Thank you, Joshua. Living intentionally is our freedom from blind certainty. I am practicing minimalism for almost 5 years now. Less chores, that's true. Sooo true. More money? Yes, definitely. Also, comparing people/things is not in my book anymore. It's about my intentions now and what I truly value. Thank you, Joshua.. for reminding people that there are more to life than money and stuff.

Once the penny drops, it all seems so darn obvious--fulfillment comes from relationships and experiences, not things, and indeed things just get in the way. The fact that this insight is so counter-cultural indicates the depth of the material sickness in our society.

So....what is your take on hair mousse? (Joking, joking, joking! I was raised on the sayings, 'voluntary simplicity' -- good! 'Conspicuous consumption' --bad!) My dad's apartment was like a capsule...with art work from the museum's post cards on one wall, my art work on another wall, and a bunch of Louise Nevilleson bookshelves made of orange crates painted black in the corner. I had my own orange crate bookshelf for my books...painted pink on the inside with yellow trim and yellow drips for stars on the inside against the pink paint....and a magnificent foldup dolls house modeled on Holden Chapel with the arched windows, made out of cardboard and made from one of the mockup rooms that they used to plan out exhibits at the museum where my dad worked....only this one was dyecut into a dolls house instead of a museum room mockup. And it folded up to be tucked behind the harpsichord for storage. i could take it out and put the sticks into the corners to hold the walls up and put in furniture and dolls out on the livingroom oval rag rug if I wanted to play with it. Otherwise my toys were stored under the harpsichord. I had been taught to be careful of the pointy part of the harpsichord and not to bump my head on it. And because my dad spent time with me, instead of time climbing some corporate ladder, I was grades and grades ahead of my classmates in reading and math in school and had studied four different foreign languages by the time I turned ten years old...and yes, I went to Harvard on full scholarship for four years.

Our journey to minimalism has been going on for years. It goes in fits and spurts. Letting go of sentimental items is the hardest. Especially after the death of loved ones. One of the things that I try to tell folks is that it is a journey. Minimalism is different for everyone. And your minimalism is not mine. Just as your journey through life is not mine. But we travel similar paths. :)

I think minimalism is always intentional. Just to own few things due to circumstances beyond your control is not minimalism, that's poverty or misfortune. You are likely to still persuit the material lifestyle that most people and not having it will probably not make you happy. That said, I'm sure that for some it may be an eye opener to have had a sucessful materialistic lifestyle and then suddenly lose it. But it still has to be an intent to keep living with less to be minimalism. I guess what I'm trying to say is that living with little is not necessary minimalism, but rather to chose living with less and be happy about it.

After I had a car accident. I became a horder, and I charged up my credit card. When I had pain I would feel better when I bought something. The guy who hit me flip my car. And I have concussion and broken collar bone. 3 years of mental physical torment. Now I am slowly getting better, and looking at this has cost me. So now I am trying to get back my life. I am still going thru treatment, but I want to throw things out. But I can't, so now I am burdened to sell and pay my bills or I'll loose my high credit score. I am not able to work. I am depressed because I need to escape this. I feel helpless. But have not stopped praying. Maybe I should pray more and have stronger faith..but it's been a roller coaster .my auto insurance is currently trying to end all help for those who have treatment for more than 3 years. Any advice. I canceled my car insurance because can't afford. I have no recreation other than friends limited in mobility even though I am better than before. How do you get rid of items to sell for bill payment. I put things on market place and practically give things away. I have a 3500 couch leather and trying to sell for 200. Great condition. No one wants.so I feel like just starting to fill boxes and throw things out.90 percent..

Kindly make a video regarding hoarding more stuff and disastrous effects of accumulating more stuff. I mean make a video specific to hoarding disorder.

To appreciate all of your things you need time as well. Owning too much stuff makes it almost impossible to appreciate even some of your possession. What a pitty. You own things but you can't appreciate them. Or use them. Or love them. It really doesn't make ANY sense to own more than you can handle.

You should do a house tour!😁

I go back and forth. I get rid of almost everything I own. I stay like that for a few months and I find it to be so boring, so I go out and fill my house again. It has been a never ending battle for the last ten years. I have no problem getting rid of stuff. I just love decorating and I feel my house has zero personality when I am a minimalist. I just recently got rid of almost 50 huge totes. Just this past weekend I came home with a mini van full of more stuff. I have always been all in or all out. I can never just do midway. HELP!

You should check out The Minimalist post cast from last week, it's about what you're stating here. Good luck!

Do you want to do midway? I too was an all or nothing person until I just had enough of it. It's very Zen, and it's a practice. And it's a process - I keep finding the middle road in area after area.

@Asmaa Abuouf My problem is one day I want to be extremely minimal, so I get rid of almost everything. A few weeks later, I hate being a minimalist and I fill my house again. Its a never ending struggle.

@@ingerfalch-jacobsen1717 What I want depends on the day. One day I want to be a minimalist and I get rid of stuff. A few days or weeks later, I hate being a minimalist and I fill my house again with loads of stuff......then, I hate all the stuff and want to be a minimalist again.

I give a tour during the Uncluttered Course. I find the tour is most helpful in context, rather than staged for a video.

No kidding....the more floor space you have the more you have to mop and vacuum....and who likes that?

I do. Since I got rid of area rugs it takes less time and effort to clean my floors. And I love the clean and spacious freedom it gives me. I'm 60 years old and struggled to keep my house clean. Now it so easy.
