Thank you Brian for the great video! We haven't seen this type of content from you in a while...please do more of these, they help tremendously! Although I realize they take a ton of your time to do them. But that's why we love you 😀😀
@@AutomateYourLife hm... I've got excited too early. I used the edge drivers for Aqara motion sensor and contact sensor. They worked when first pairing. Then after overnight, they went offline. Not as reliable compared to pairing them with Aqara hub and then exposeing Aqara Hub as a Matter device to SmartThings. Was hoping I can skip Aqara Hub. Alas, that's not reliable.
Very well documented video as always - and well timed. 👌 Edge drivers from the community are getting better every day but the information needs getting out to people who still haven't appreciated the possibilities of the new architecture. Might even be interesting to do a second part later....
The obvious one would be what @SuneKuntz mentions here, Mariano's Child Temperature and Humidity, with its thermostat for heating and AC. Also it gives a barometer on the Aqara sensor, which Mariano added a pressure change rate to recently. By Mariano also the Virtual Calendar and the Random Mirror Switch. For those into Tasmota there's an great integration driver. While talking of cheap buttons there's IKEA 2 way press/hold (4 functions) button at $8 that runs with the Beta channel Zigbee Button driver.
Brian, thank you for all your work. I truly appreciate your videos that very so often, gives great info on ST and new ways to do things. It's like having a "SmartThings Watch Dog" It's appreciated!! I've recently found, that the virtual switches created in ST, both Yakov's Virtual Things Edge driver and the V'edge driver you are using in the video, created unrealiable results in Alexa using them as a trigger. Strangest thing that the virtual devices are actually being found and triggered on/off in Alexa when turned on/off in ST, but the Alexa routines, used with the virtual device in Alexa, are not always triggered. Sometimes they do, sometimes they do not. It's been working perfectly until recently. So I had to use IFTTT together with "Voice Monkey" that creates triggers for Alexa as an alternative solution. I know this is not ideal, since it's cloud based, but it is realiable and works every single time. I eventually found this to be an Alexa problem and it seems to be raleted to swithes with the ability to toggle. Virtual switches with no toggle function, are working fine. Maybe this is just me, But I used an entire day to troubleshoot, to no avail. You asked for edge drivers in your video, that makes a difference to ST: For me, just last weekend while troubleshooting the above problem, I found this: The "Web Requestor Multi v.1.2" which is also available from TAustin (clever guy): This makes any LAN device which is able to receive web requests via HTTP to get triggered. I've been using virtual buttons in ST/Alexa to control Yamaha Musccast speakers in my home for a few years now, until last week, when I found this. With this driver and the comprehensive Yamaha API documentation I've beeen able to create local triggers to all my speakers, using the Web requestor driver which in total can hold 50 request in a single shortcut. Turn on/off, volume up/down, change input, mute/unmute it all works instantly and It is truly effective with MusicCast. Just remember of course to reserve that IP-address of your speakers in your DHCP scope ;-) Maybe this will inspire to another video or give anyone reading this inspiration to do other things with the "Web Requestor". I'm still looking for a way to trigger my Xiaomi Standing fans, without using Alexa. Home Assistant seems to have a clue here: github.com/syssi/xiaomi_fan but I have not had the time to look into it yet. It would be really "cool" to make it work. -Sorry bad joke, i'll find my way out.
Very interesting there with the Web Requestor. I think that's one you need his Edgebridge for right? I was thinking of making a "advanced Edge Drivers" type of video where we'd go through this kinda stuff but that takes a lot of work on my part :)
For the Aqara temperature/humidity sensor I use an Edge driver called "Zigbee Temp Sensor and Child Thermostat Mc" from Mariano. It enables me to view the sensor as a large card on the home screen (same size as the home monitor card). I can view the temperature, humidity, and atmospheric pressure at once without having to go to the sensor page. On the sensor page it gives me battery, LQI and RSSI. It is one of my favorite Edge Drivers!
2 things it could be: Location: maybe edge drivers aren't allowed where you are yet. Samsung could be blocking. Forwarding links are blocked by something on your system. Those are bit ly links so they are shorter (I was out of characters in the description), and then they are forwarded to the right location/url. So maybe check and see if your browser or some other software is blocking that
Hi Brian. You really have a great page and you do great job. I have problems with my sensors connected to my Aeotec Smart Hub. It is mainly the open door sensor, sometimes they appears connected to the Hub but others they don't, even within a reasonable distance. I would like some advice on this. Thanks in advance
Thanks! It sounds like you have a little interference going on. Have you tried some other locations for the sensors to see if this clears it up? Maybe even try it not physically located on the door, because it might be the door itself that's causing this issue. I've sometimes located the door sensors at the bottom or the middle of doors too and seen different performance connectivity wise. So try a few spots. Also, if there's a repeater being used (which you can tell through the Browser API shown in this video), then maybe try a different repeater being used. Those can sometimes be problematic.
I have beet transitioning all my devices over to Edge drivers on SmartThings and have had - mostly - positive results. A copule of GLEDOPTO LED devices didn't play well but Mariano was exceptionally helpful on the SmartThings community and explained what was going wrong (mixture of outdated driver and misunderstanding of function on my part). I was rather annoyed (well, maybe that's too strong a word) that SmartThings ddin't have a default Virtual Device as an Edge driver. I have my TV plugged in through a ZEN25 outlet that monitors power draw. I can set a virtual device to turn on and off based on the power draw from the telly (it's an OLED so I can say it's turned off even if it's going through a panel refresh after using it). I have another virtual switch tripped by other sensors (light levels and time) to determine whether my living roon lights need to be on or not. Using that virtual switch, I can combine the telly virtual switch to determine which lights to turn on and off to illuminate the room but not cause screen glare. I am grateful that private developers created such high quality virtual alternates, but the whole enrolling in and selecting of drivers is not something average users will do and is a significant reason not to use SmartThings just now. This is a huge opportunity for Google, Amazon and Apple (if they could ever get their stuff working even half as well). My main annoyance is that my old OSRAM 73743 Zigbee button is not properly supported like it was with an old DTH. I don't really want to buy a new device but it seems there will not be a compatible driver written for that device. I'd quite like to see you review the Tuya Presence Sensor combined with SmartThings (and other platforms), as it is actually available to buy in Canada whereas the Aqara has to be imported and the EP1 is not linked in your notes about this video.
Mariano is so good Alex! Good to hear he took care of you. As for the other stuff, I happen to agree with you on a lot of points. Old products we'll want to see come forward, and in general we should be able to say "Add Device" and then have the interface tell us "We found these Drivers that teach your device how to work. They have X Features". But that's UI/Experience vs programming ;) The Tuya Presence sensor has been so good. It's stayed connected and it's been bulletproof during automations. I doubt I'll do a full review on it, but I am building to a comparison review on Presence Sensors!
30:05 I can see here you tested it in some day between March 8th and April 4th. Starting at 47.x, SmartThings requires unit scale for temperature measurement, then I added it on April 14th. So, the temperature measurement from your soil sensor should be working since then. Thanks for mentioning the driver I developed to help community.
Thanks for the video. Very instructional and simple to follow for a non-tech person like me. Thanks to your video, I was able to add the Aqara Vibration Sensor which I couldnt find the right driver for. I bought 2 Aqara remote buttons model No. WXKG20LM and the driver from Andrew doesnt work. What can i do to get them to work? Pls advise.
Hello! Can you please give me a little bit of help? I'm using a v2 smartthings hub and a MCCGQ01LM window/door contact sensor, but i can't add it to smartthings. I've installed the drivers exactly as you did, I've put the sensor in pairing mode (light blinking several times) but the app doesn't discover anything. Same thing with the SJCGQ11LM water leak sensor. Please help!
Ok, so something is happening this week with all of that. I'm not sure why but a bunch of people are having this issue. Maybe try in another couple of weeks...I bet a fix has to come through
Hey great video. It allowed me to add the new aqara motion sensor.. Question.. I tried add several gosund devices and they added everything except the switches and dimmer switches.. Any suggestions for getting those recognized.
I'd rather use a presence sensor which doesn't require spending a significant portion of my lifespan adding the device via an edge driver. Can't I just buy a battery-powered presence sensor that can be added within the Samsung ST app and then adjust a few settings and spend the rest of the day at the beach?
Presence sensors are different than motion, and you will not find one on battery. And honestly, an edge driver install is 3 - 5 taps.... Then you add the device like any other Smartthings add
I used to use the aqare door sensor, but run into problems since they do not support Zigbee repeaters that I need due to house size. Hopefully this will be fixed with the matter integration
Hey Brian - great video as always and really helpful to get some amazing features with Hue and Smart Things. One thing I noticed is that my older Hue lights had a few additional options added such as circadian rhythm and gradual brightening of the lights within Smart Things. With the new driver these seems to be missing. Is it still worth moving everything over to the new drivers?
@@AutomateYourLife thanks for getting back to me - it was weird I didn't notice it before so was wondering if it came across when I installed the driver. Cheers!
Hey sorry me again .. I've noticed that my switches aren't working correctly. I have several hue switches and they work through the hue app but google or Smart things don't recognise the change in status but the hue app does. I've tried adding light changes in the smart things app under the imported switch's but the lights don't respond. Any ideas?
Hey Brian, do you know if there's a more advanced way to integrate Switchbot into Smartthings via an edge driver or equivalent? For example I love that the contact sensors have a brightness sensor, and you can use this within switchbot to start automations, but in smartthings, alexa etc you only have the ability to run automations based on the contact sensors open or closed status. I'm not seeing how I can use the extra switchbot features outside of the switchbot app, which is super limiting. As always, your insight is greatly appreciated!
Hey Brian love the information that you provided on your channel I’m hooked. Have a question, I’m heavily invested in Amazon and Wyze products at my home and I also own a Samsung SmartThings V3 got that when it first came out and never really used it so it just sat in a box unplugged. I wish I came across your channel back then but oh well so recently I purchased a few Sonoff wireless buttons thinking I could use them in my home but no luck. So I got online and picked up the Sonoff bridge pro lol I know your saying to your self stop buying new things and use what you have. So now the buttons work thru IFTTT and Alexa 🤦🏻♂️ I’m lost I love my Wyze ecosystem and Alexa so I don’t know how to get everything on one page. Do you have any suggestions or guidance? Should I just hold out and wait for Matter or something, any help would be greatly appreciated keep up the great work. Thanks
All that stuff is pretty hard to bring together. The one thing that might help you is Alexa and Smartthings with the virtual switches/devices that I show you in this video. That would give you a SmartThings interface and Alexa voice control for everything
I used the vEdge-Amazon integration to get repeating voice notifications when my garage door is open, on all Alexa devices, as I can’t see my garage door easily from inside the house. Also did the guard mode synchronization.
@@AutomateYourLife I'll try to explain it here. Maybe this one is worth a video on its own? To get Alexa to repeatedly remind you of an open garage door, you’ll need SmartThings, at least one Echo device, a sensor on the garage door that has been properly set up, and Alexa and SmartThings must already be linked. You’ll also need the vEdge virtual device creator, as explained in this video. You'll need to create two vEdge virtual devices: 1) A virtual switch, named Garage Door Reminder. I'll refer to this switch as switch 1). 2) A momentary combo button, named Say Garage Door Open. Set it up not to return to its previous state when it's used as a switch. It should only do that when pressed momentarily. I'll refer to this button as button 2). Set up Alexa to send an announcement to your Echo devices whenever button 2) is pressed using an Alexa routine. And test this, whenever you momentarily press button 2), you should get an announcement. I think Amazon has a cool down period for announcements, so don't expect multiple notifications within a minute or two. Test whether Alexa can turn off switch 1). Manually turn it on, then say: Alexa, turn off the garage door reminder. Switch 1) should turn off. You'll appreciate this when the garage needs to stay open for a while and the reminders become annoying. Next, you'll need to create three routines: 1) Start garage door reminder 2) Repeat garage door reminder 3) Stop garage door reminder Routine 1) should trigger when the garage door opens. Add preconditions to your liking, mine only works when the location mode is Home. The actions are: turn on switch 1) and momentarily press button 2) you created earlier. Routine 2) should trigger when button 2) has been off for X minutes and should have as a precondition that switch 1) is on. X will determine the waiting time between notifications. The action should be to momentarily press button 2). This routine causes the notifications to repeat every X minutes, until switch 1) is turned off. Switch 1) can be turned off manually in the SmartThings app, or by shouting at Alexa, or by closing the garage door, which will trigger routine 3) and stop the reminders. Routine 3) must trigger when the garage door is closed. The action is to switch off switch 1). That's it!
@@AutomateYourLife Let me know how that worked for you. I have a few other unusual automations too. For instance, an instant reminder that a door or window is still open when I close the front door. I subscribed to your channel today. I'm probably the only subscriber in my country 😄
I brought one of the Tuya Presense Sensor and paired to smartthings with the edge driver you show in this video, but I having some issues the sensor sometimes it worked and sometimes it doesn't work, any advise. Thank you
@@kietle575 maybe just try unplugging and plugging it in. Then look at history over the next few days and see if it's disconnected or just not seeing you. If it's disconnecting, then you'll need to work on the ZigBee signal strength getting to it
How do I update all these Edge drivers? Is there a way to do it automatically, or do I have to check the website to see if a higher version number is released?
Hi. I have a tuya / moes zigbee siren, and try to change from "zigbee-thing" to a zigbee siren driver, and everithing failed. I saw there are a lot of zigbee drivers in your IDE smartthings profile. How can i get it?
Great video. Newbie with Smart things. When I do the add for an Aqara motion sensor it adds a Vdev with no driver options in the eclipses. What do I need to remove (I no doubt installed something daft at some point) to get it to add. When I check the hub I only have the driver listed that you have in the video so getting frustrated with it. Haha.
Hey Philip, VDev is actually I think a Virtual Device Creator tool that's also available. I think maybe you installed that another time and so your hub is scanning and bringing that in. I think maybe you're not getting it to actually add or show up. Sometimes Aqara can be a pain to get paired with the hub, so get closer to the hub (anything within 10-15 feet is definitely good) and try a few times. For every aqara device, check how to fully reset that model and make sure it's on the list of devices in that Aqara link! Aqara's always tough to get to pair. Stay with it!
@@AutomateYourLifeit continues to want to be the virtual device. I can just not find any of stopping it. Little bugger. Would I need to do a hub reset do you think? (Still running my stuff mostly out of Alexa currently so no big problem to start again)
The EP1 website says it is sold out :( Brian, do you know if they will be coming out with a battery-powered version? So it doesn't need to be plugged into an outlet.
Hey so I'd doubt that the EP1 will ever have a battery version. Those sensor types are a little more power hungry than your standard motion sensor. I think we need solar to take over and provide power before we can battery power them.
@@AutomateYourLife Thanks Brian. Do you know if this can be connected to an ecobee thermostat? So that it can provide temperature and occupancy information.
@@AutomateYourLife Thanks. I have a Philips Hue motion sensor but don't see how to add it to the ecobee app as a sensor. Both are in SmartThings. That's unfortunate about the occupancy sensor not working - that would have been a big advantage.
Thanks! Very usefull, still tinkering with one of my zigbee sockets, trying to find out why energy usage is not updating real time and need to be done manually. Hope i find it, your video will sure help to play with it
All of this is way beyond my level of knowledge. I thought this would be a simple task of following instructions. Looks like V3 hub and devices were a waist of money on my behalf
Love your presentations. Could you make one small alteration to your vocabulary please though? If you're calling something "cheap", could you follow that up or replace it with "affordable, low cost or poorly made, low quality". We all know there's a big difference and your term is ambiguous. This isn't meant as an insult. I would like true clarification is all. I'm certain that you don't intend to leave it open to interpretation but it definitely is.
I actually had to remove these Hue drivers from my hub, after a few weeks working approximately, it started to go worse and worse but everything came back properly after removing them. I am sure it was with good intend and knowledge, but most probably one of ST updates screwed it all.
@@AutomateYourLife yes well could be something else, but I did not add anything lately nor changed any settings. It just started to act weird (Delays to operate, deconnection from ST even if working perfectly by voice, etc...) Really weird. It started mainly after the big power outage so it could be it, but I already reset almost everything, so its weird.
