I thought I had condensed and minimized our last apartment. Until we moved to a smaller space. I put my minimalism mindset to work. What a surprise to me that I learned how keeping items in a very organized but out of sight, is out of mind thinking, hurt me in the long run. Evidently, I was not ready to part with these things. So I stored them knowing I had them but did not see them. Ugh! I did not need them or ever used them for years. I was holding on to maybe or what if or the memories. The move was made harder because it was all heavy glassware. A lot of it. After the move, I had to contend with it. I realized that my memories are in my heart, yes, they are good reminders, but I don't live like that anymore, I had to remind myself, use things, love ppl. Time and life has moved on. I let them all go. I got all the use I was going to get out of them. Its cumbersome now and too hard and heavy to lug around with me. I want someone else to have it and enjoy it. Being able to accept, and to recognize and to let go is an exercise in generosity. Aquisition and keeping way too much than is a need is greed. When I thought I was a minimalist before, I now realize I still have ways to go. However, I have a map and the understanding. There is nothing like a move into a new space that will expose the excess you have. I like how you get a new perspective, a fresh set of eyes. And you can see where you were blind to other aspects. Its growth. The journey continues.

Exactly. I've moved a number of times in the last decade and have been through the process you describe every time! This time I've started the process of evaluating and purging 3 months ahead of time and not even sure im moving. Letting go of some loved items I haven't used in years. I'm here for motivation to stay on it. Thank you for your post.

The baskets for storage idea is a fantastic way to corral stuff! I use baskets for most of my stuff to limit how much I own. However I do something different for my shoes. I live in a very rainy climate. My shoes get wet, muddy etc. so throwing all my shoes in one basket ruins the other pairs. What I’ve found that works well for me is an open back 5-shelf bookshelf with shoe/boot mud trays to catch the water & debris. When the trays get dirty just rinse them off, dry with an old rag, place them back on the shelf. Viola! No dirt on the floor and no dirt or mud inside my shoes! Hope this idea helps.

I just had a random thought pop in my head, but for anyone decluttering trial sized (or full sized) toiletries and makeup samples that are new but you’re not going to use yourself, please donate them to women’s shelters or homeless shelters. Those makeup samples especially, that you might otherwise throw away can go a long way to help women in shelters to have a little bit of confidence and maybe pamper themselves a bit or to get ready for a job interview etc. Someone mentioned this to me a few years ago when I had tons of hotel shampoos and soaps, free toothbrushes from my dentist, makeup samples from the mall, etc. so I thought I’d share it with all of you.❤️

Please do not donate hotel size toiletries to any woman’s shelters. I learned the hard way that it’s triggering to young ladies that may have be victims of s*x trafficking , or forced into other hurtful activities. I learned that having their own full size products were very liberating:)

My "label maker" is a roll of masking tape from the dollar store and a sharpie. I'm perfectly happy with it. 😊 I label drawers, containers, to do items (such as "mend" "clean" "return".) Also leftovers and freezer items. Storage gets labeled with just numbers. The numbers are written down in my index file with content lists. (Yes, a REAL index file, not digital).

You are right about those sentimental items. I saved way too much kid stuff, because I had it in my head that they would want all of it when they got older. They don't. LOL! Just keeping things for ourselves is a great solution. I was keeping everything for everyone else. Just an FYI, frustrational isn't actually a word. Frustrating, is the word to use. And, yes, living with clutter is very frustrating. I have to remember to use hooks and get things up off the floor. Two simple solutions that make a big impact. "Make it easier to put things away, than to drop them on the floor." Brilliant! And the shoe baskets are, too!

Frustrational is a word used in teaching reading to refer to a “frustrational reading level” in which the reader has less than 90% accuracy when reading aloud and less than 60% accuracy when answering multiple choice comprehension questions. Becky used to be an ESL teacher. I imagine that a “frustrational clutter level” is where only 90% of things can fit in the designated space and it looks like a mess 60% of the time. I like this word! 😄

With keeping children’s art, creations, etc I have a box for each child, not too big. Every year we go through it and they choose their favorites. I have kept 1-2 things that I love like about me papers they filled out. So far my kids keep downsizing until it’s just a few from each year of school. My mom had kept totes for me and put it in binders and I felt so bad when I got them at 25 years old and threw almost everything away. I could tell she felt a little bad too because of all the time and money she had spent to do it.

I used to have a lot of boxes to contain things but now I don’t even need basket or box anymore cause I don’t have anything to put in them. I thought I was being very organized with these boxes but then I learned that when I minimalized/simplified my lifestyle (meaning I don’t need a bunch of different products to make my life functional) I stopped having things to be put in boxes or baskets. I would recommend using baskets made from natural material like bamboo or grass instead of plastic though, cause having plastic stuff lying around always somehow make me feel that the house is cluttered.

Instead of trying to force the tortured term 'multi-purpose' as the adjective for furniture, try 'versatile'. Labeling requires a discussion. Labels can actually CONTRIBUTE to visual clutter/noise. That said, there are two ways where labeling is most helpful: -If you share your home with others, it can help establish 'homes' for items by designating where things go. -If an item is difficult to identify (sauces, dressings, salt/sugar, AP flour/cornstarch/etc) or if instructions/ingredients/expiration/nutrition data is needed, labeling (and maybe an adhesive side pocket) is very useful. In such cases, labeling can be discreetly done (artful cursive at the front, other info along the container side/rear/top). Here's another tip: The key to cleanliness and less food waste in the fridge is LINE OF SIGHT. The further down you store things in the fridge, the less depth you can see into it. You see pretty much everything on the top shelf, but it's harder to find things further down and harder to dig things out to find out what's in there. The answer is to use deep containers to organize what's in there. There are clear plastic bins that run 14"-15" to the back of the fridge, and when you pull them out you will catch a glimpse of what's in there. The action frequently reminds you of what you have and it's easy to take a moment to check the exp date (or label the top with the exp date). There's a clear plastic drink can loader that reaches to the back of the fridge and sits nicely at the bottom shelf where it dispenses canned drinks while storing them in the coldest part of the fridge. You can store gallons and half gallons next to leftovers on that to shelf, where you can SEE everything. Basically, anything below the top shelf that's doesn't reach from front to rear depth of the fridge should be kept either on the top shelf or in a bin that reaches back to the rear of the fridge. One other suggestion: There should be a Transition Zone set up by the door most used to enter and leave the house. I see a partial one set up in the video, where there's hooks to hang bags, outerwear, keys, and mail, but it should be expanded to include space to consolidate things going out and a drop zone (temporary or not) for things coming in. My final suggestion: Do NOT have a 'Junk Drawer'! Have a 'Utility Drawer' instead. A Utility Drawer is intentional, purposeful; just like a Utility Belt, it's filled only with necessities. Filll it with a basic small tool kit (you don't need a box, just the tools). Include things like masking tape, a permanent marker, Command hooks and strips. Junk Drawers tend to collect things we can't decide what to do with; it's basically full of deferred decisions, aka CLUTTER. If necessary, set aside a small 'Just In Case' basket or dish to collect twist ties, bread tags, rubber bands, and the like (If it gets too full, just dump the contents in the trash). Leave the Utility Drawer for things that have a real ongoing use

What did you think about the actual concept? Did you find the idea helpful? ❤️❤️
@chris...9497
@chris...9497 3 месяца назад
@@minimalease Did you mean the concept of versatile furniture? That's a necessity for living in a small space. I live alone in a 320sf studio apartment. My galley kitchen runs along 10ft of the walkthrough from apartment entrance to the only window. The window illuminates the living space (and not the kitchen), which is my LRm/bedrm/diningrm/library/home office. I have a large velvet ottoman that provides storage, extra seating, a footrest, and a coffee table. I have a smaller vinyl hassock that provides seating and shoe storage in the kitchen. My bed is a futon that can convert to a sofa and breaks down easily for moving (it fits into a standard car!). My wood & fabric dining chairs look elegant but also fold flat when space is needed. I have an armoire in my living space that is the center of my home office, allowing filing, shredding, printing, and additional storage. Some years ago, a library was liquidating their assets, and I bought from them three 15" square boxes. I have used these versatile finished wood pieces as containers for transport during moving, as a bench at the foot of a bed, and stacked 3 high as a bookcase. Currently, I have one as a storage container and the other two stacked as my Entry Station (part of my 'Transition Zone"). I have magnetic hooks on my fridge and my stove vent, to hold frequently-used kitchen utensils. I have almost no counter space, so I bought a cutting board just wide enough (24") to rest on the open top drawer in the middle of my kitchen, between the stove and the sink. I have a 4" gap between the fridge and the wall next to it; I store my folding footstool there and I have hangers in that nook for my broom, Swiffer, and dusting rod. In the old days, I had a chalkboard on the kitchen wall, to mark down supplies I was low or out of. Now, I use a magnetic dry erase board and just snap a photo of what's written there with my smart phone as I go out the door. These are just a few of the accommodations I've set up to make the most of my limited space. Versatile items are something I very much rely upon. Versatile furnishings and other organizing aids aren't universally useful, by and large. If you're lucky, they work most anywhere. But some only work in unique spaces in specific residences. I tried a foldup kitchen island at one point. It had wheels for easy mobility and two fold-down shelves. I thought it would provide me extra prep space in the kitchen, but all it did was obstruct movement through the apartment. With the shelves loaded, I couldn't fold it up to get it out of the way. It was long but not very wide, and yet it was too wide to allow me to access the sink, that movement through the kitchen cause the island to be pressed against that sink, blocking access to the Dish Cabinet above. And the prep space on top just became a clutter magnet. My point is that it's good to try things, but understand not every good idea will actually work. Most will.

@larajohnson8656
@larajohnson8656 Месяц назад
Frustrational refers to “frustrational reading level” which is when a learner reads with less than 90% accuracy and answers less than 60% of comprehension questions correctly. Becky used to be an ESL teacher. I like to think of a “frustrational clutter level” as only 90% of objects fit in the space and it looks like a mess 60% of the time. 😄

You're a very nice speaker and your videos are informative but... Frustrating is the word... not frustrational. That is NOT a word. Just trying to help because that really hurt my ears to hear you say that Keep up the great work...I just couldn't let that go by... sorry

THINK: Is it TRUE? Is it HELPFUL? Is it INSPIRING? Is it NECESSARY? Is it KIND? You may have forgotten to think before this comment. Also, just wanted to point out that “frustrational” actually describes a reading level. While that is not the definition she was using, it still is helpful to note.

♥ I've never had to label anything, even when I had a lot of excess stuff. I guess I have a good memory for where everything is but even my partner with ADHD gets along just fine. I guess establishing clear homes for everything in the most convenient spot works well enough for us.
