As a complete YES fanatic, and a classically trained musician. I give you high marks for an extremely difficult choice. I know your love for this piece. And I find your vocals a credit to the original singer. Tell me how you feel about "Olias of Sunhillow"
@robertbrucescott8278
@robertbrucescott8278 8 лет назад
Olias is a nice suite, but I found myself far more drawn to Song of Seven. Any Jon Anderson solo work is going to sound a lot like Yes considering his pivotal role in songwriting and especially sound production (not to mention singing). But Song of Seven walks a little away from the Yes field and stands on its own. I've covered a few other Yes songs through the years - Cinema, Owner of a Lonely Heart, Roundabout, Mood for a Day, Masquerade, Wondrous Stories and Love Will Find A Way. If I were to cover an Anderson solo, I'm pretty sure it would be Song of Seven.

"Olias Of Sunhillow" eh! A great record, and one that always reminds me of being arrested for possession of LSD, funnily enough! Aged 17 back in 1977, I was busted for possession of 3 hits of Richard Kemp's "Orange Barrel" acid (very, VERY potent shit btw!), but managed to drop another 3 on the ground without being observed. When they let me out of the cop shop I ran all the way back to the Glasgow city centre pub where I'd dropped them on the pavement...and they were still there! So, once I made sure there were no coppers around, I picked them up, guzzled one, and split the rest between my mates who were waiting in the pub, wondering where the hell I'd got to! Well, after a night of partying and pure acid madness it was back to my parents house (who were still in bed) at 8 in the morning, to see out the rest of the trip with some mates, and to stick on the LP's. And first up was "Olias Of Sunhillow". We're just settling down and getting into the golden grooves of "To The Runner" when the doorbell goes. I'm thinking it's one of my straggling mates so answer the door, and it's two uniformed coppers doing an address check, asking if one "Terry McBlahBlah" resides at this address. Talk about a rapid come down! That'll do it every time. Luckily my old man never heard the door or I'd have never seen my 19th birthday!

Olias on LP would definitely be a far better choice than Pink Floyd's The Wall (the movie). At the dollar theater... Thanks for the story! rbs

Thanks for the kind words! I kind of suspect from the way the song lays on the guitar that Steve Howe might have written the bulk of the song on guitar and then arranged out several of the parts into the keyboards. Yes was known for doing things like that - apparently Bill Bruford arranged the guitar part for another of the songs on that album and gave it to Howe. Thanks!! rbs

Thanks for the kind words - glad you enjoyed it! After having cracked it, I kind of suspect that's the way Steve Howe wrote it and then farmed various melodies or chord voicings off to the keyboards and redeveloped other parts for the steel guitar or the electric. Yes had a tendency to write arrangements for each other. Thanks!! rbs

Easily one of my favorites and a favorite whenever I perform with the 12-string. I checked out the Pevar/Anderson collaboration - nice harmonies and really nice guitar work. I've been working on learning the bass guitar line to Heart of the Sunrise. There are a number of bass players who have covered it, but no one has done a complete breakdown tutorial. Once I have it under my fingers (which may take another month) I will post a tutorial and break it down soup to nuts.

@robertbrucescott8278
@robertbrucescott8278 7 месяцев назад
Thanks for the kind words! I have updated my arrangement after some study. You can actually find stopped tracks on RU-vid of just the guitar lines from the original recording. For a few years Howe often used a guitar emulator on stage instead of actual acoustic instruments. It does a fair job of emulating a 6-sting flattop and classical, but I don't find it's emulation of the 12-string particularly convincing. I think Howe has gone back to dragging around a large number of guitars, including a 12-string for this song. Thanks!! rbs

Arg! no I'm not finding a lot of youtube videos on this tune. and I really wish you had done more then the "Oh just do this for this part" If I could just do this for this part, I wouldn't be on youtube looking for someone to actually show me how to play it.
@robertbrucescott8278
@robertbrucescott8278 6 лет назад
As far as I know, I'm the only person on RU-vid with a version that can be played all the way through solo on a 12-string guitar. If you have questions about specific parts, I will try to give you as much additional help as I can. Unfortunately, I cannot read or write guitar TAB and I would probably run into copyright issues if I were to publish a sheet music version. If you can, please reference minutes and seconds of the video that you have questions about - that will make it easier for me to help. Thanks!! rbs

A worthy effort.............I drop the E down to D to cover the bass in the beginning myself. Then tune it back up before Preacher teacher.
@robertbrucescott8278
@robertbrucescott8278 8 лет назад
Glad you like it! I still have a few songs I wrote decades ago with drop D, but I long ago stopped using any kind of alternate tuning. Which is why you can find standard tuning solutions to Dream Academy's "Life in a Northern Town" and Zebra's "Who's Behind the Door" on this channel. Every other guitar lesson I've found on these uses the alternate tunings these songs were originally written with.
@jasonstabler6247

I really like your version of the 3rd part, the preacher teacher section, well in fact all of the playing. I can’t quite make out notes you are playing or the picking. Would you mind writing out that part that begins at 7:06 to about 9:06 , it´s brilliant
@robertbrucescott8278
@robertbrucescott8278 8 лет назад
Glad you like it! Unfortunately I am illiterate of guitar tab and only barely literate of general sheet music, so difficult for me to explain more thoroughly than in the tutorial, but I will add a few notes below: The tutorial for those sections begins around 17:45. The segment you specified contains (in my mind) four different segments. For the first of these I am copying Howe pretty much exactly. Keeping the little finger on the 4th fret of the G string and playing the B and E open. The moving parts work the 2nd and 4th frets of the D and A string and the 4th fret of the low E. That's' the Preacher and Teacher segment. It's followed by a transition from the 12-string to electric (tutorial at 18:27) . I don't think I'm copying Howe exactly, but I got close by barring the D,G,B,E strings at the 9th fret and pulling off the 12th fret of the E them B strings, then the exact same lick, but barring at the 4th fret and pulling off from the 7th. I'm emulating the bass riff in root position (Squire does it halfway up the neck on the bass). (tutorial at 18:36) From the open E, hammer on 2nd fret, then hammer from 4th to 5th. 2nd then 4th fret on the A string. Then on the G string, 4th then pull off from 2nd to 1st. 4th fret on the D, then the A, then slide down from from 4th to open on the E. The next segment (19:20) starts with a root position E major chord, then A and B chords, think of A and B bar chords, expressed as 7th on the D, 6th on the G and 5th on the B, then up two frets for the B major with the A and high E strings played open. I'm just improvising to try to emulate some Wakeman keyboard riffs in this section, but I've also added a lead I picked up from one version. (19:51) On the E 7th, 9th, then pull off from 11 to 9 to 7 on the E, then B, then 9 to 7 to 5 on the B. (20:20) Express the A and B chords by moving the root position E major up the neck. Again, I'm not copying Howe here, I want to keep the chords ringing. But I'm getting close to his riffs by arpeggiating down on the E major and adding the 4th fret on the A string, then after arpeggiating the A and B chords from the G to the open E strings, adding the 9th and 7th frets on the E string. Hope that helps! rbs

Robert Bruce Scott I would love to see you do another yes song (no pun lol) Steve is such a unique player and most underrated. If you would allow me to be so bold as to say please have the camera a wee bit closer to the guitar! @robertbrucescott8278 7 лет назад
I haven't heard of Mack Meadows. Over the years, I have performed Steve Howe's Masquerade (Union) and Mood For A Day (Fragile). I also learned bits of Turn Of The Century (Tormoto) and Parallels (Going For The One). I've also covered the Trevor Rabin and Tony Kaye lines on Owner of A Lonely Heart and (my favorite from that lineup) City Of Love. I suppose I would be most tempted to put together a version of Wondrous Stories (Going For The One) or Birthright (Anderson Bruford Wakeman & Howe).

I was originally trained as a baritone, but as my voice matured, i picked up a powerful high range and started training as a tenor. I give a lot of credit to Dr. George Smith at Cameron University. Seems it took nearly a decade for his lessons to sink in and really make the difference in my vocal production. I am (as you can pretty much tell by my technique) self-taught on all my instruments. This song is not appropriate for your voice either lower the guitar half to a full octave if you insist on singing the high or lower your voice at least a full octave maybe more. You've come a long way, your guitar playing is getting better. Remember practice practice practice.
@kingrobert1st
@kingrobert1st 4 года назад
Your timing is a little off and the guitar was hideously out of tune towards the end. I can't believe your guitar never slipped off your knee! But it was a brave attempt even though it fell way short of the mark. If you do another tutorial, break it down into sections (like with John Butler's Ocean) and get the cam at a decent angle and closer so you can see your fingers on the strings. I play it a whole step down to suit my vocals and also to reduce the tension on the 12 strings. It's way easier believe me. I play Your Move that way too with the bottom D dropped to C.
@robertbrucescott8278

Alas, nothing is ever perfect. But I'm glad you enjoyed most of it. I have gotten several requests to update the tutorial with more closeups and greater attention to sections. I've been doing a lot of writing recently and have so many projects that video from recent performances is stacking up and I have a lot of new material that I have yet to post. That said, given all the requests I will probably update the tutorial. Thanks!!! rbs
