My extra tips for clarinet care: 1. Swab slowly. Less force is better than more force, and there's no hurry, is there? 2. Rub down the keywork with a soft cloth before it goes back in the case. 3. Avoid over greasing the corks. A stick of grease should last you more than a year, at the very least.

I was told, in a video by Morrie Backun, to swab your wood clarinet four times a year with unsweetened almond oil. I do this at the beginning of each season.

Hello Cally! I am enjoying your videos immensely. (Learning stuff too). I like the idea of swabbing “very slowly“ from the bell letting a (clean dry) swab. Letting it stop a few times on the way up to absorb moisture. For the mouthpiece, I have a 100% silk pocket square and some very fancy lacquer chopsticks, that I never used. They fit great in the case. :-) I put the pocket square over the pointed end of the chopstick like a tent, and gently insert (from the cork end) until it comes out the window, pinch the silk gently pull the chopstick back out. I slowly pull the silk through the window (barely touching the sides ) Just thought I would share. Keep up the wonderful work - you’re helping more people than you realize. I’ve been playing since I was nine and I am now 72 years old. Just started again aggressively about five years ago. (own 20 horns but have my faves) my wife teaches piano and we’re having a great time playing together. Thanks again!

You have made some very good suggestions regarding care of a clarinet. I agree with all of them except the idea of changing mouthpieces every few years. I bought a Vandoren B45 mouthpiece in 1991, and it is still my favorite, even though I put it aside for a few years after I purchased a second-hand Selmer mouthpiece. If one follows your cleaning and storage recommendations, a mouthpiece can last a long, long time.

I can vouch for the barrel tip! I play an old Boosey and Hawkes 1010, which is a huge English Bore clarinet (0.600 inch bore. Buffet R13s have 0.574 inch bores), and ONLY barrels in that large bore will work! Worse yet, you MUST use a mouthpiece that was meant to be played with that bore, or else your intonation would get all over the place. In my hunt for equipment, I was only limited to 3 options: Find an original B&H mouthpiece, Peter Eaton's mpcs and Ed Pillinger's mpcs.

11:50 I do slightly differently. I shove the corner of the bark part of the reed in the upper part of the case and then I slide down the reed into the case. Before I discover that way, my reeds were making dips on the sides by putting them straight in the case

My old clarinet repair man always loved seeing mine cos he said I looked after mine and kept it clean. He said some of them he seen were held together with plasters( band-aids)😅 and were grubby

I'm curious as to why you'd want to have a new Yamaha worked on anyway. It's not going to have the kind of issues a Buffet so often does, so it shouldn't need anything, right?

I usually swab both ways. Down the clarinet from top to bottom then back the other way.

In my opinion, the right way is from bell to mouthpiece because usually bell and lower joint don't have as much moisture as the upper joint and the mouthpiece. If you start from the top, you bring moisture to the lower joint, so not good.. And If you want the best cleaning, all parts one by one, leaving the swab about 5 seconds in every part.

Hi Cally, I am not sure of the best way to clean tone holes? I know you can get tone hole cleaners (bit like little pipe cleaners) but I have never used them as I am worried about causing damage to the pads, do you use them?

I gently rinse the reed dipping in a glass a clean water. Then wipe off with soft tissue.

@@callyclarinet I don't actually know as I'm a beginner. My clarinet teacher loves them. Interesting to read about the different tone depending on pad type.
