12 V One Wire Conversion Massey Harris 30

Just a little attention is needed to make this particular Massey Harris model 30 from the early 50's a reliable daily 'go-to' tractor. I was going to put the whole thing on one video, but it ended up with over 3 hours of rough footage, so the portion on the process of electrolysis on the inside of the gas tank was removed and will become its own video.
In this video, after the machine is moved into the shop we adapt and fab a bracket that's required to mount a Delco one wire 12v alternator instead of the original 6v generator. So there's a tiny bit of milling machine work to cut a slot, a little torch work with a rosebud to bend the bracket to fit and a little welding work to fab the new mounting bracket and spacer.
There's a little discussion concerning an ammeter and also the benefits of changing to or adding a voltmeter to the system....much to the chagrin of the 'restorers' that insist on all period correct components may I add. There's nothing wrong with 6v systems as they will start a tractor as good as a 12v system.... if all things in the tractor are in good working order. BUT.... throw a little low compression here and there amid a few other 'technicalities' that are out of tolerance a little bit and on a cold day, the 6v seems to fail to spin fast enough to compensate for those less than desirable conditions in a 60 or 70 year old work horse. Consider too that the 6v generator must also work as well as the cut out or regulator to maintain the 6v battery. The 12v will spin the engine much more rapidly and allow the worn engine to start much much easier.
Again...as with all the pontification on this channel, this is ENTIRELY my opinion on the topic, please acknowledge that I acknowledge that your opinion may be different. When I enter old age and have the time to donate to period correct restorations....and hopefully the money to do so....I will change all my 12v conversions back to 6v. Well maybe not the ones I use daily. LOL. Ok all you Massey purists out there...save your hate mail, I'll just delete it anyway...but I do appreciate you taking the time to watch. I understand and agree with your collective opinions on the desire to do your thing though.
I am tickled to get this one ready to compete for pto time on the wood splitter or wood hauling trailer. It's ready to go to work now except for the one flat tire on the front. Dang.
Might even give it a bit of a workout pulling the roller to pack the roadbed......

Thanks John, always a soft spot in my heart for old Massey's...that's what I grew up on. One of my uncles had the newer 65's similar to your 50, but he had a 1952 model 55 as well. Unfortunately it is still sitting in a shed that has collapsed on top of it. He's gone, but the tractor remains. Thanks for watching sir.

Agreed Gator. This is the best thing to come down the pike since they put a pocket on a tee shirt !! Six volt is ok if everything in the circuit is ok AND if the engine isn't worn too bad, but there ain't nothin' like spinning one with the speed of 12 volts !! Good deal on all the JD change overs. You can install a 'low rpm exciter' for the older lower rpm antiques that work well. Its easier than messing with pully changes. Thanks for the comment Gator.

Yes...if you remember Junior, the 30 is an updated 5 speed version of the 4 speed older 101 Jr. tractor. Its actually the same engine as the Jr. had at the end of production, but in its earliest years, they had a 124 cu in engine and the mid years they ran a 140 cu in. A full 98 cu inches less than the 44's 260. Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for the comment and the compliment as well.

Nothing better than a TM44 video with my morning cuppaJO! I'm always learning something and wanting an old tractor to work on so I can bug the bageebies out of ya to get it running. Perhaps one day but I shoulda coulda woulda didn't buy that old Oliver a year or two back that had a for sale sign for one day. Well living in farm country there are lots of tractors hidden in barns or under sheets of roofing. I've always been the mostly wood dude making metal stuff when needed. But the electrical end of things not much experience. So your videos are always fun and interesting and I don't have to throw spit balls cuz I'm bored. I do get a Lancaster Co. Farmer News every so often but that has very expensive large tractors. I'm amazed that farmers can even afford those big new jobs. But then I wonder how guys can afford those big new chromed fully loaded pick ups that drive for you and make doctors appointments, cook burgers and groom your knuckle hair all while watching the dash tv! Can't even get a single cab 8' bed new truck. This is what a few friends told me who just wanted a plain new work truck. No such thing as simple anymore it seems. Now that old tractor just purrrrrrrz! That old sound creates many memories and many hours of work done with more to come. You know Friend Wendell, if you get all your tractors running, hook em up together and get a large enough chain, I'll just bet you could pull our states close together. Even weld them together. Our taxes would go down and we could elect one good governor who's a mechanical craftsman @ $10 an hour. Paid vacations to the Rough and Tumble of course. Well it's time for a refill and a Big Thank You for this Fine as frogs hair video! And of course to tell you to take it easy cuz ya know how ya are! Many Blessings fromma Holler! DaveyJO

Good Morning sir and thanks for the thought provoking comment today DaveyJO. My son just bought one of those trucks you are talking about. It is freaky how much stuff is in it and on it. Heck, we hooked it up to my gooseneck and it automatically displays ALL the lights on the trailer in a simulated trailer design on the dash and runs a diagnostic then tells you if a light is out or not !! Then you can program all your different trailers into it on the steering wheel so it will automatically set the electric braking for the different trailers and number of axles once you program them in !! I mean, c'mon man, that's taking almost all the fun out of it....LOL. I think the last time a plain-jane 8' bed, bench seat with AM radio and no a/c was available was around '85.....I think mine was the last one off the line !!.. Heck, it not only does not have tinted windows, it doesn't even have a head liner...LOL. You take care sir and relax today and tilt one this aways around ten a.m. and we will be tippin' one together....social distancing to the extreme huh !!

Tractorman44 I was tippin you about the same time this morning so I think we tipped over somewhere in the middle between our states. People probably reported a sonic JO BOOM I'll bet! My old Ford van is sitting outside even as I button. Bought it new in Nov. of 87 for $12,000 and it was an 88. Six cylinder utility van, no frills, no a/c but it did have a heater. I sometimes would bungee an old foam pillow between the back doors for a/c in the hot summer. I had a bunch of fiberglass ceiling panels and I sawed some 3" poplar strips about 3/8" thick and sprung them up against the ceiling which held those drop ceiling panels against the roof very nicely. They were 1" thick so on a hot day it wasn't like an element in the oven. Even had side vents I could open and close with actual clip latches. It had a heavy duty suspension and I could have reg. It a 3/4 ton but way the extra fee? I'd fill it up with fire wood and she never even swayed a little. It got down to having to spend a goodly sum to keep her going and today I wish I would have. I gave it to my mechanic about 5 years ago and one day we'll get together so he can get it. His name is Ron,and he's a big Chevy guy and I've always been partial to Fords. My first car was a 1950 Ford flat head six and I indeed wish I had that car. Now I have a 2003 Honda Element which I call the Adventure Box. I bought it new,it has 144000 miles, runs great great in the snow, I've haul about everything you can think of I it including 12 1/14" 4x8 pieces of foam insulation. I can take out the back seats completely or prop the up against the wall. Gets 30 mpg on a trip and I'm keeping it as long as possible. If I want luxury I could buy some plush deal but a truck should be a truck in my book. Not to knock anyone who wants to spend 80 years paying for it, whatever. Each to his own I say and sayin nat , time for more JO which will tip your way now at 3:00! A Fine weekend to all at 44 Headquarters and Blessings from it his Holler to your Holler! DaveyJO

Thank you sir for the kudos !! They do make for a quick changeover but the actual restorers are big proponents of keeping tractors all original. LOL...me, not so much. But that may change in the future...but I doubt it. That 48 Willys had slight variation of this same engine iirc. They didn't have an updraft carb though. Somewhere along the line though I think continental lost the engine contract .....??

I have a 1952 MH 44 special that has everything converted to 12v except the generator. We converted ignition years ago which was easy. (Just the coil, the 6v points and starter can handle the 12v. At least ours have the last 20 years! lol) My grandfather bought it brand new when we used to have a farm and it's been passed down in the family. I use it to plow snow in the winter. Man you got it right that how tough those old Continental engines are. My tractor still runs like a top, starts right up at 100 or -30 degrees! Just tired of the 12v battery not being able to be charged by the 6v generator still in there. Haha I see the art of starting a tractor from the side is still alive, I do the same with the old iron. Not that safe, but sometimes you gotta adjust the fuel mix fast if she's been sitting. Thank you so much for making this video, I'm going to follow what you did exactly!

Man, I love the 44's and the 44 Specials. All my conversions have the original 6v starter as well. One of our old 44's we just turned up the cut out on the generator a little around 9v or so and installed an 8v battery. We couldn't use the 6v lights on 8v, but that's ok. The output voltage of the adjustable third brush on a 3 brush generator can generate pretty high output, but I am not too well versed on that technique. I always convert to an alternator. One wire GM's are easiest, but the three wire ones are also quite simple. I really like using a voltmeter much better, because the instant the key is turned on, you see the 'static' voltage contained in the battery. You can immediately see if the voltage is low so you can stick it on a charger or go ahead and 'boost' it with a charger to start it. An ammeter won't do that for you. As long as the normal 'shift lever shake' is performed I have no problem with starting over on the side either. Thanks for taking a look at the conversion. I've done a ton of them and have had good luck with virtually every one.

@@BrodieBr0 That 70 is a beast. It's the upgraded big ol G. JD's seem to be pretty good at maintaining their value so depending on what the old diesel is it sounds like a good deal to me. I have a much smaller JD 50 which is the upgraded baby B. Also an old '39 A. Oh yeah and a little bitty 40 or 41 LA. The key to their longevity is the low rpms they run at. The higher the rpm, the higher the level of balance needs to be in rotating components. Can you imagine a standard JD two cylinder operating at 3,000 rpm...??? LOL...they'd come apart at the seams. But at less than 1,000 rpm at wide open throttle they will run seemingly forever !! Your 44 Special tops out around 1350 rpm for comparison. Typically the 6 cylinder Ollies would run even higher at around 1600. Remember that horsepower is developed by rpm and torque is developed by stroke. (Basically, that is). Torque is what gets the 'work' done. Enjoy the new 70 !!

Hi. Since this is a positive ground system, what battery post did you connect the wire from the alternator battery + or battery - ?
@tractorman4461
@tractorman4461 3 года назад
Sorry Randy, I missed notification of your reply. Originally they were positive grounds, but when I do conversions I consistently change them to negative ground with no ill effects. To do so, I disconnect virtually every wire on the tractor and start all over. Most times the old insulation is cracking and has the potential for leakage anyway, so I just go from scratch. So now with a negative ground the BATT post goes to the + just like normal. Hope that helps.

What was the treatment you used on the inside of the gas tank? I'm the one who used a piece of chain and roofing nails to shine up the inside of mine. I had some type of vinyl used on my "44 massey harris and it really was a great mistake.

This was the first time using this product, so the verdict is still out. The product was POR-15. I've used several other brands, but this one has given me what I consider to be the best initial results. It looks as though it becomes a bonded surface and not just a covering. It goes on so thin that all the imperfections in the surface of the metal can still be seen. I will know in a few years, but have bought another order for the next tank in line. I've had good luck though with virtually all the brands I've used over the years on machinery, tractors and motorcycles....but I think the success is tied to the prep work. Some are in excess of 20 years in operation now. I AM expecting an issue with the next tank, because it has a center baffle and I have no way of #1) guaranteeing the rust is removed from the back side of the baffle and 2) there's no way to guarantee the back side of the baffle will get coated with the product. I suspect some issues with rust particulate dropping to the tank bottom off of that surface. One of my viewers suggested placing a rare earth retrievable magnet inside the tank near the pickup tube to collect potential rust. THAT is a stellar idea. Now to find a rare earth magnet with a stainless steel or at least a coated hook or loop on it...... Thanks Jim for stopping in with your input !! Good luck and be careful if you use the process of electrolysis.

You always seem to surprise me with very original comments Tom....LOL. I do appreciate it coming from an old HVAC guy like yourself though. I sure hope the compensation in that position doesn't pay too well because I'd hate to feel like I was going back to work...LOL !! Thank you for your always supportive comment sir. Take care and be safe.

Looks like your Massey 30 has a Massey Harris 33 radiator. What did it involve to make it fit? Hmmmm?

I bought this tractor at a farm auction where it had sat in a barn for a long period. So any major changes to the tractor was done by the previous owner. Massey Harris was really good at building different models with interchangeable parts though. I would have to measure one of the 33's and compare it to one of the 30's to know for sure if anything had to be done. So Terence, your guess at this point is as good as mine. Thanks for noticing and commenting about it.

Well that was pretty slick and really appreciate the shiny tractor shoutout. This video just reminds me that my Polaris Ranger needs a battery again. Would a larger battery last longer than the little tiny ones they come with. Take care brother

Hahahaha...when those words slipped out, it was you who I was thinking of, well, you and GP too because he is always shining up his hood...LOL. I was hoping you would take the little poke with the humor with which it was intended. On a side note, I DO have an old John Deere lined up to bring in the shop. It's been shedded since '96 after an old buddies dad passed. About the larger battery... I honestly don't know, but I think the higher the number of plates the longer the battery life. I would assume the highest CCA rating should connote to a longer life. I buy blemishes for my old truck and tractors and go for the highest CCA available and seem to have very good luck with them. But one of the biggest keys to longevity is the use of a floating charger in the off-use months. Unused batteries will lose about 1/2 volt per month so if a 'batter maintainer' is used on a fully charged battery, the battery will remain fully charged as well as 'de-sulphated' and last much longer as a result. It has to be a 'floating 'charger or battery maintainer though and not just a trickle charger. A battery receiving a continual charge will have a shortened life and that's where the floating output comes in. Hopefully this will help you in the future Ben. Thanks for the comment sir.

Tractorman44 Thanks Wendell good info. I bought a maintainer about a month ago but I guess my battery was on its last leg already. I think I’m going with a plain lawnmower battery and try my luck. Thanks again for the info take care brother.
@tractorman4461
@tractorman4461 4 года назад
Our Greene Acres one thing to remember is that the battery maintained is primarily used to “maintain” existing voltage. For the most part it is recommended to fully charge a battery prior to installing the maintainer. It will only maintain the voltage that’s there. Now there ARE more expensive maintainers that WILL charge THEN maintain but you have to make sure it says that. If it doesn’t specifically say that your assumption should be that it’s a maintainer only. Now admittedly there are new developments entering the market daily so this may not all be totally correct anymore. Good luck Ben and if you find out better info feel free to turn me on to it because I don’t want to spread outdated or outright incorrect info.
